Saturday Cubs Headlines/Live Game Thread

I'll be real honest here.

By the time the game rolled around last night, I was about a bottle and a half of wine into my evening and in no shape to be allowed anywhere near a computer. So for those of you who were disappointed by the lack of a game thread, I apologize. It will make you feel better to know that I am paying for it today.

But hey! It looks like we won!

Dempster threw seven shutout innings for the second straight start, allowing four hits in another sterling performance. He earned his 14th victory, and likely has three starts remaining to give him a chance to tie his career high of 17 in 2008.

The Cubs' starting pitching has been on fire during the first seven games of the nine-game trip, allowing three earned runs over 48 1/3 innings for a 0.56 ERA.

"The mix has been good," manager Mike Quade said. "The veterans have done a nice job, the kids, I think, have gotten better, especially the kids in the middle of the bullpen. I can't pinpoint any one thing, but we've pitched really good on this trip and there's no better place to start when you're going to win ballgames than on the mound."

There are a lot of other boring headlines today, like "Barney Showing He Can Play" (zzzz) and "Cubs Counting on Castro, Colvin, Cashner" (duh). So let's not bother with those.

Over at cubs.com, we learn that Gorzelanny is fine and will start on Friday, Castro is mostly recovered from his bruised hip, and the Cubs don't want to rush Colvin at first base:

The manager sees no rush for Colvin's switch inasmuch as Xavier Nady is playing well at first base, and Micah Hoffpauir is doing well as his backup, in addition to the relatively rapid adjustment Colvin would have to make.

When Piniella announced the club's intention to prepare Colvin as a first baseman, Colvin initially practiced regularly in relearning the position he played in college. Now he does it mostly on the club's days off, he said Friday before the Cubs' game against the Marlins.

"There's no rush right now," he said.

Colvin said he could play first base in a Major League game right now if the Cubs wanted to try him there. But he added, "I still have some things I want to learn about positioning myself in different situations."

Quade said the Cubs want to make sure Colvin is comfortable at the position before he plays there.

"This could be a valuable thing for him some day," the manager said, emphasizing the last two words.

You know what would be an awesome way not to rush him? Get Adam Dunn to play first next season.

Tonight the Cubs had back into whatever-the-Marlins-stadium-is-called.

Eww. Adam Dunn? Wasn't he washed-up hitting-wise 5 years ago?

Very much no. His defense is awful though.

Here are his OPS and wOBA numbers from the past 5 years

.855/.365
.940/.399
.898/.383
.928/.394
.940/.383

Surely they're not seriously considering starting next season without having plugged either Dunn or some other free agent into the first base position?
Or are they going to, perhaps, offer it to Nady on the basis that he now appears to be fully fit?

I am at one of my favorite hotels downtown, debating if I want to take a bubble bath BEFORE or AFTER the Cubs game. . . . mwah-ah-ah-aaaahhhhhhh.

kiwibob said:

They are playing now so doesn't that rather take the decision out of your hands?
(I am a bit jealous of the whole bubble bath thing though)

I decided to save the bath for after the creme brulee gets here. :P

Well don't drop it if you're going for the brulee-bath combo... that would be a tragedy. (Especially if it's one of those whirlpool baths)
