Pizza and Bagels and Mets. . . Oh My!

deepdish.jpg

It's a race to the bottom between the Cubs and the Mets this weekend. If we're lucky, the Cubs will drop every game in the series, thus improving their draft pick AND bringing a little bit of sunshine to my life.

Why, you ask?

Because, as everyone knows, my Throwing Like A Girl podcast partner, Caryn Rose of Metsgrrl, and I have a little wager going as to whose team is worse: Cubs lose the series, she has to send me real, honest-to-god New York bagels. If the Mets drop the series to the Cubs, she gets a genuine Chicago-made deep dish pizza delivered right to her doorstep.

Looking back, it's clear that we were hungry when we made this bet.

In news that is far less happy than pizza and bagels, it looks like the human target, Tom Gorzelanny, has a fracture after all:

Cubs pitcher Tom Gorzelanny will miss at least one start because of an incomplete hairline fracture and swollen left hand after being hit by a line drive during the team's 5-3 victory Wednesday over the Pirates.

A CT scan Thursday revealed the small, incomplete hairline fracture underneath the fingernail of his left little finger, which is stable. But it is his swollen palm that will keep Gorzelanny from making his next start. How long he misses will be determined after the swelling subsides.

No starter has been named to take his place next week, but Carlos Silva could be activated by then. He has been on rehab assignment (irregular heartbeat) at Class A Peoria.

As long as it's not Spellcheck who takes his spot in the lineup, I'm okay with it.

Bruce Miles managed to pin Tom Ricketts down on a couple of points while he was wearing giant Harry Caray glasses on Wednesday:

Here are the highlights of our brief chat with Tom Ricketts:

--On whether the Cubs would hold the line on ticket prices for next year, Tom was noncommittal, saying the Cubs hadn't formulated their pricing strategy yet.

--On attendance being down this year and thousands of seats being empty of late, Tom said: "Obviously, we want every seat full every game. The attendance has been very, very strong in the grandstand. But certain day games and then the last couple of night games, the bleachers have been softer. We've got to put a winning product on the field to make sure all the seats are full every year."

--On whether that lower attendance would affect player payroll for next year, he said: "They're related. Obviously, the more attendance generates more revenue, and more revenue gives you more flexibility to look at increasing payroll. The fact is, we have a really strong fan base. Hopefully, we'll put a very attractive product on the field next year."

During the Harry Caray celebration, Harry's widow, Dutchie, wore a No. 23 Ryne Sandberg jersey, saying Ryno and Stan Musial were Harry's two favorite players. Tom Ricketts said winning, and not a marquee name, would be the main criterion for the new manager. He said the hiring would be GM Jim Hendry's responsibility and that Jim would bring Tom a "short list."

Given the fact that the Cubs have the highest average ticket prices in baseball and one of the worst teams, I think the Ricketts would be bat-sh*t crazy to increase ticket prices next season, which basically shows total and complete disregard for the fan experience, but that's just me.

Also, does anyone else see the seeds of 'we can't afford big-name free agents because Wrigley isn't full' being sown? I really hope I'm wrong about that.

We're going to use this as a game thread today as well, so I'll give you guys the details bright and early:

You WANT the Cubs to lose AND you do not want Spellcheck to pitch.

So I conclude that you believe Spellcheck would turn in a quality start??

I do not have an iPod and I do not follow college football. I notice that you did not give us your favorite college football team.

Love the whisper "It's still April..." Made me laugh.

That's not a balanced bet. The pizza is way better than the bagels. That also reminds me of the time I ordered a hot dog with everything in Manhattan and got just mustard and ketchup with it :(.

Drive My Car - The Beatles
Man, It's So Loud in Here - They Might Be Giants
The Norbals! - Moxy Fruvous
And Your Bird can Sing - The Beatles
Express Yourself - Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band

Yeah, right??? Since when do bagels equate with freaking deep-dish pizza??? You got hosed, CJ.

And I unadvisedly ate a "Famous" Nathan's dog once in NYC; tough-skinned, unpleasant little bugger on a shitty bun. Couldn't even finish it. I can't imagine eating 50 of them, or however many those eating-contest freaks consume.

my friend who lives in Westchester has this great hotdog place by her house. they put the fries on the hotdog and then put this awesome sauce all over it. if i were still eating meat, i would have asked her to send that.

Horse with No Name - America
Crimson and Clover - Simon and Garfunkel
Anyway - Sister Hazel
Little Darling - Joy ASkew
Corduroy - Pearl Jam

my college team is worse than the Bears this season, maybe I'll just give in and become a Boston College fan, its the only other college shirt I own, Go Eagles!

I say go ahead an let this FA class pass. The team's gonna suck next year anyway regardless of 1 big bopper of power pitcher, so let this class pass and let the Fuke and Ramirez contracts run their course. Then, maybe we can start talking some FA's. Sure we might catch lighting in a Byrd again...

flyball said:

user-pic

agreed

and ticket prices should not be increased

Wanted to clarify - obviously the Cubs will need to sign some folks, but I'm talking minor signings for B or C level FAs to fill out a roster.

I don't like college football, and I down own an iPod, but if I did, I'd have

Pain (MegaPain) - Money Grubbing Bastards
Orion - Metallica
Random Acts of Senseless Violence - Anthrax
Kickstart My Heart - Motley Crue
Wish - Nine Inch Nails

This time of year, when everyone has a super crop of tomatoes and peppers, you can buy frozen bread dough and make a super pizza yourself. Even a vegan like Julie would like it.

But my favorite college football team is the Grand Valley State University Lakers, closely followed by the Michigan State Spartans!
