Cubs Wednesday Headlines: Ho Hum

Since last night's game was a real yawner, we'll start out with something different today. The Cubs are recognizing their faithful twitter minions at three separate dates during this last homestand. Were I in Chicago, I'd make an attempt to go.

The Chicago Cubs are hosting three "CubsInsider FollowFest" events to reward fans for following the team on Twitter. These events will take place Wednesday, September 22 at 6 p.m. CT at Captain Morgan Club (1060 W. Addison St.); Friday, September 24 at 12 p.m. at John Barleycorn (3524 N. Clark St.); and Tuesday, September 28 at 8 p.m. at The Stretch Bar & Grill (3485 N. Clark St.).

Fans in attendance will be eligible to earn prizes like hats, t-shirts and other Cubs gear while supplies last by simply showing Cubs staff they are following @CubsInsider and/or @Cubs on Twitter. Attendees will also receive the opportunity to enter a drawing for additional prizes, which will be revealed by @CubsInsider on Twitter leading up to the events. Fans who are interested in following the team on Twitter can sign up on-location. A @CubsInsider "tweep" will be present to talk social media and listen to ideas from followers. Everyone is encouraged to stay to watch the Cubs' games against the San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres, respectively.

I know there's a lot of love and hate here for twitter, but it's nice for the Cubs to be showing interest in social media and their fans who use it.

In other twitter related news, there was a fun game running last night, so fun, in fact that even Keith Law was playing. The hashtag was MLBnovels. Some favorites:

Scott Eyre
A Tale of Two Citos
Gone With the Winn
Père Theriot
WAR and Peace
The Paper Chase Utley
My Swisher's Keeper

You get the idea. Please feel free to share your own creations in the thread today.

As for on-the-field fun, the Cubs managed to secure a losing season last night with a 1-0 loss to the Giants.

The Cubs played well against the Giants on Tuesday, as Carlos Zambrano tossed 6 scoreless innings. The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the eighth on Buster Posey's home run to center field off Andrew Cashner (2-6).

"You make a mistake in a game like that, you get a ball up a little bit or it comes back ... Posey is a dangerous guy," Quade said.

As far as Zambrano goes, his record held at 9-6, and his ERA dropped from 3.75 to 3.56. He used one word to describe a season that has included anger-management treatment.

But don't think that Big Z is happy with this season after his resurgence. He had one word to describe his performance this year.

"Bad," he said. "The Cubs pay me to win, and the fans want me to win. I only have 9 wins. For me, it's another disappointing season. But the most important thing is I have my confidence back. I will be back next year with the same attitude and the same passion for the game and ready to do some damage."

Pat,

I think we supported them last year and they lost. I don't think they want us again. Hell, do we even want to root for ourselves??

Not only was Keith Law playing, but Keith Olbermann was playing, too. Some of mine:

Grapes of Werth
The Old Man And The Cey
Sense & Samardzijability

And I can't remember who did One Flew Over the Konerko's Nest, but that might have been my favorite. Some from others:

.300
To Kill A Marlon Byd
Tess of the d'Urbinas

Oh God, they were so funny. So much fun.

Also, from @JGHrabak (who I don't follow, I was just searching the hashtag): "The Brothers Kouzmanoff"

How about some songs?

You Don't Mess Around With Jim Thome
Jesus Christ All-Star
U Can't Catch This
One-Winged Anaheim Angel

Debated on whether to include this, as both the song and player are well before my time (I'm 22), but:
White Rabbit Maranville

I was thinking we should have fans of other team pay us not to cheer for their team in the playoffs. We adopted the Twins last year, and they got swept out in the Division series.

Don't go-you might miss something......

cadarnell said:

I don't think cashner blew that game ... the dude hit a good pitch and the wind helped it get out. cashner is going to be real good I think .. we just had very little patience at the plate last night and that was what blew the game, if anything .. it was probably just one of those games the cubs weren't going to win .. it happens... we'll win tonight.

It would be nice to be back in my Sweet Home Chicago. But I very well might head into Denver and see The Freak or Ubaldo pitch this weekend in some serious games.

Say hello to Paul Friedman for me. He knows Hack Wilson.
