Cubs Ruin Billy's Big Night By Calling Up Jeff Samardzija

Last night, the Chicago Cubs honored me by giving my favorite Cub of all-time his own statue:

Billy Williams was surrounded by family, friends and longtime former teammates as a statue of the likeness of the Cubs Hall of Farmer was unveiled during a ceremony Tuesday at the corner of Addison and Sheffield, just outside of Wrigley Field.

Former teammates Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, Glenn Beckert, Randy Hundley and Ron Santo were in attendance as Williams' wife, Shirley, four daughters and grandchildren watched the long-awaited depiction of Sweet-Swinging Billy Williams from Whistler, Alabama.

Awwww. Congratulations, Billy! How ya feelin' these days? Good? Ever spent any time at 1st base? How do ya feel about giving it a shot next season?

Meanwhile, Cubs everywhere looked on in envy as Billy described a bond with Cubs fans only the likes of Ryan Theriot and Mark DeRosa have experienced:

"We kind of interacted with the fans," Williams replied. "There weren't too many fans at that time, about 5,000 or 6,000, and we'd dress down in left field. When we'd come into the dugout, we'd stop and chat with the fans.

"The crowds began to come in '69 because we were a good ballclub and we had a lot of fun playing the game. ... It was a joy to interact with the fans, and of course we got close to winning that particular year. We made the fans so excited that year, and it was tough for them to forget about us."

No kidding, Billy! Here we are, 40 plus years later, still celebrating the 1969 Cubs! Maybe when I'm old, my grandkids will be fondly remembering the 2004 Cubs!

And for some reason Jeff Samardzija is back. And by the way, I really resent the fact that I now know how to properly spell "Samardzija." There's absolutely no reason for that.

Samardzija watch: Jeff Samardzija watched several teammates get called up while he remained at Triple-A Iowa since April and admitted he wondered if he would ever get the call. He finally did Tuesday, along with Sam Fuld, Bobby Scales, Brad Snyder and Justin Berg.

"Originally they said, 'We'll send you down until you get right and then get you right back up here because there's a role to be had," Samardzija said. "I went down, I got right and pitched my (butt) off for a while and didn't hear anything."

Maybe your hair was in your ears?

And also there was a game or something yesterday:

Silva started his first game since Aug. 1 as he came back from a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat. However, he and the Cubs fell well short of the Houston Astros, who scored early and came away with a 7-3 victory at Wrigley Field.

The hitting star for Houston was Michael Bourn, who singled, doubled, tripled and drove in 3 runs.

"I feel very good; I don't enjoy the result," said Silva, who worked 5 innings and gave up 9 hits and 6 runs. "Especially after the second inning, I started feeling like (I had a) better rhythm, more confidence on the mound."

Um . .  welcome back?

Cubs and Astros again tonight at 7:05 pm CT.

Also, a belated "Happy Birthday" goes out to @Anjelsteffy! I hope you enjoyed your big day! And a big L'Shanah Tovah to the LOHOers celebrating New Year today!

So, are we all just giving in and adding @ signs in front of our names now? Someone at work did this to me the other day, called me @Mark in an email. This Twitter takeover shit is really getting out of hand.

When they invent a Jitterbug quivelent to Twitter(call it Twitterbug) then I'll really want to go the Twitter route. I only have FB because at work they actually want me to, in case we have a really big earthquake, bomb, etc, and they can't get to us by phone. I look at FB 2 times a week at the most....

What I hate about Twitter is the time commitment thing. I'll follow you, you follow me...

Too much twit for twat.

I like twitter because I can tease CubbieJulie and all my followers can see it. She's right....Twitter is awesome!

JulieDiCaro said:

you need a more challenging job.

Doc said:

user-pic

Well...yeah...but that has nothing to do with teasing you. :p

I'm about the farthest thing from a Luddite.

The back-and-forth, RTing, etc makes conversations impossible to follow. The sifting through irrelevant and boring derp on Twitter just doesn't make it worth it.

another night game? what happened to the wonderful Wrigley day games?

sloan peterson said:

To give people an alternative to reruns? Anyway, what channel is the game on? Or is this game for Chicagoland eyes only?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

CSN+, so it's for about 50% of Chicagoland's eyes.

sloan peterson said:

I guess I'll be flipping back and forth on MLB network to see any Cubs highlights...

Doc said:

Did I ever tell you all one of the greatest benefits to my move last month?

Moving just 25 minutes south of Madison, I am now able to see CSN Cubs games without DirecTV or mlb blacking them out!

Yea me!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

where did you move to? janesville? beloit? you're right in my neck of the woods up there. I grew up just on the IL side of the border.

Doc said:

user-pic

Evansville...about 15 miles west of Janesville.

Doc said:

user-pic

of course, now all of you are going to go and stalk me.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

yes, because i just can't get you off my mind.

Doc said:

user-pic

I do that to people...I'm like a rash.

HackWilson09 said:

user-pic

Don't forget to account for White Sox fans. So it's for about 48% of Chicagoland's eyes.

Doc said:

user-pic

actually, Cubs ratings have fallen a bit, so it's closer to 47% now.

Cubbiejulie, you need to hire some muscle. Any volunteers from the LOHO Community?

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Seriously, be careful. Where I work we have security systems to lock the internal fire doors, and we have been told to lock ourselves in our conference rooms in case of trouble, because they are fire proof....

JulieDiCaro said:

Just looked at the standings. Is Starlin dead?

Doc said:

Either that, or the Cubs traded him to the Angels.

sloan peterson said:

Same thing...:)

Buster Olney Tweets: Derrek Lee simply has not had the impact the Braves hoped for, yet -- hitting .245, 0 homers, 7 RBI in 16 games.

I'm not sure why they thought he'd be any different in Atlanta.

Doc said:

user-pic

But he's a class act. And now he will help the Braves cope with choking down the stretch like he did with the Cubs for so many years.
