Cubs Live Game Thread: Farewell, Old Friend

empty_wrigley.jpg

Until next year.

When you think about it, it's pretty fitting that Jeff Samardzija is closing out the home season at Wrigley.  After all, some of us started the season with such high hopes. And what have we been reduced to? Considering Jeff Samardzija for the starting rotation.

It's such a perfect way to sum up the entire season. And what we've all been reduced to.

What's more, for those of you who were on board the "Bob Brenly For Manager" express (I'm looking at you, Alex Quigley), your bus has been impounded

Cubs announcer Bob Brenly withdrew his name from consideration for the managerial opening Saturday, saying "at this particular time I didn't feel this was a fit for me."

"I said all along I would like to get back on the field if the situation was right," the former manager of the world champion Diamondbacks said. "But for personal and professional reasons, I just think this is not the right time for me."

Brenly said he would like to manage again and had been in contact with other teams. So if he wants to manage again, why not interview with the Cubs?

"I'm just going to say for personal and professional reasons," he said. "There's a lot of things that enter into it, but I have my reasons and that's it."

Translation: I don't foresee this team being close to "good" any time soon and I have no desire to be held responsible for this mess.

And while Cubs fans may not be willing to consider Ozzie as the next Cubs skipper, Ozzie is more than willing to consider us:

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Manager Ozzie Guillen said his first, second and third choices are to continue to manage the White Sox.

But if the Sox elect to cut ties with their manager, Guillen said he would consider the once-unthinkable -- the Cubs -- if pursued.

"If (Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf) doesn't want me, yes," Guillen said Saturday night before the Sox beat the Angels 6-2 for John Danks' career-high 14th victory. "My position was I would never sign another place and leave the White Sox for the Cubs because of the respect for Jerry. But if Jerry is leaving me? I'm not leaving them, they are leaving me. Then, I have a choice to make. Everything is out there.

"As soon as you get divorced, you are free to do whatever you want. Yes, I will, not because I say I'm going there, but because they don't want me. Before I say it, I'm not going to leave this plac ust to punch you guys in the nose. But if you don't want me and someone else wants me, I have to make the decision."

I realize that it will be a cold day in hell before the Cubs hire Ozzie Guillen, but I would so LOVE to see this happen. As long as we're going to sick for the foreseeable future, we might as well be entertained. Can you imagine a joint Jim Hendry/Ozzie Guillen press conference?

I would give anything to see this happen.

If you're going to be at the game today, make sure to stop by the grandstand and get a signed copy of Doug Glanville's book "The Game From Where I Stand." It's a great read and would be a great way to get through the long, dark off-season.

Game time: 1:20 pm CT

Channel: WGN

Pitchers: Jeff Samardzija v. Jake Westbrook

Lineup to come.

So I was actually starting to get pumped up by a Bud commercial, then they showed Busch stadium and I threw up a little in my mouth.

Someone from MLB should walk to the mound right now, demand that Spellcheck hand over his cap & jersey, and force him to immediately exit the ballpark through one of the gates out on to the street.

How the F is he in the majors... even on this team?

Sadly,I think the highlight just might be the national anthem/god bless america. At least, Chicagoland viewers have real fall weather-it's 11:28 am PST,here in CA, and it's 93 degrees going to a high of 105 today. Tomorrow I get to look forward to 110 degrees- not under 90 until Friday.Spellcheck has started sucking-perhaps a trade for something in the off=season?

remember this when you hear its -10 with a wind chill of -29 in Chicago

I have only once been someplace where it was below zero,(Canada)and I didn't think it was that bad. Granted I was a lot younger-but still if I had the timeoff/$$ I would love to go to the Cubs convention....

flyball said:

believe me, a -30 windchill is cold

really really cold

flyball said:

maybe we'll get lucky and they'll run out of pitchers and we'll see Sam Fuld throwing the 9th

it could happen

Oh Spellcheck, don't ever change. LOL

there is no mystery left in the world, The Stig decided to write a book

its like finding out the identity of the Tooth Fairy

The Stig, Top Gear's "Tame Racing Driver"

Some say he never blinks, and that he roams around the woods at night foraging for wolves... all we know is, he's called the Stig.

ps, if you don't know what Top Gear is, you need to find it on BBC America, especially the one in Vietnam, or where they try to be truck drivers, or the drag race with the jet fighter, or the winter olympics (evidently you can play hockey with cars and a giant inflatable puck)

I love Top Gear, but I don't think the Stig's book will make it to the US. He's being sued by the BBC, and the shows producers for violating all the confidentiality clauses he signed. I thought the book already came out in the UK though. The best part of Top Gear is watching all the manly film stars drive so poorly...

it is out, and I think they fired the guy

agreed with the famous people, Helen Mirren in a helmet driving around the track was awesome

the thing I love about Ozzie saying he'd come to the Cubs is he's basically saying "I'm totally loyal, until you throw me out, then, I don't really care, I want a job"

I think people can relate to that

Spellcheck tried to stop that flying bat with this foot.

flyball said:

user-pic

um, I step away and its 8-7?

seriously? where was this team all season?

End of the game kind of summed up the Cubs season; they got close, had a chance to tie or go ahead, and once again could not execute...

How great it is to go to Europe for two weeks, and not once give a thought about what the Cubs are up to. Got to see a Champions League game at the new Allianz Arena, too. Blow Cubs, blow.
