Labrador puppy

awwww....now keep that happy feeling while reading the rest of this

I'll try to make this as painless as possible, but I apologize in advance

Starting with The Most Depressing Column of the Season a glimpse

For a team that has lost 10 of its last 11 games, has a roster that now includes eight rookies -- six of them pitchers -- and the prospect of facing five contenders in the next three weeks alone, the specter of the ugliest of endings is hard to shake.

Yesterday's wrapup, although having watched or listened to most of the game I didn't really want a recap. Here's a hint Reds won 11-4 and the Cubs have lost 10 out of the last 11.

Catching up with old frieds, as Lilly beat Jason Marquis, oh and wins his second game with the Dodgers. Didn't he only have 3 wins with the Cubs?

In news that matters in real life I hope Lou's mom gets better in the meantime he is going to Florida and will miss the San Francisco series. I'll joke about how poorly the Cubs are playing, but family always comes first.

Lets try something happy shall we?

Tyler Colvin is not playing diva

According to a team source, the organization may ask Colvin to play this winter in the Mexican League, where the majority of pitchers use breaking balls as their dominant pitch. Colvin is open to anything that will make him a better player. "I'd consider [the Mexican League]," Colvin said. "We'll have to see what happens. Hopefully, I can adjust the rest of the season here and it won't be that big of a deal."

With Derrek Lee an impending free agent whose status as a Cub is unknown, there has been speculation about Colvin eventually switching to first base. "I'm open to playing wherever they want me to, although I haven't played first base since my sophomore year of high school," Colvin said.

there is video too, but I didn't watch it yet

I'd like to look at the puppy, but my workplace filter(Pandagate Defender) has decided the photo is offensive.(sigh) Is it too much to ask if the Cubs could play spoiler for even 1 team?

It is a pretty shocking level of cute. And the puppy's naked.

ood morning from getting too warm So Cal....
Yes, it's an offensively cute puppy-obviously you need to be protected from it!
I think the Cubs need to man up and at least win one game out of every series-God knows they had enough chances with the Reds! Let's see if they'll at least win a few for Lou's Mom!

I think it's kind of funny that there's even a stereotype about Mexican League pitching.

Should Sandberg get the nod as the new skipper, will he have to manage a winter league team?

flyball said:

user-pic

if they are going to really demolish the team and start young I'd be for him managing, maybe not my first choice, but it could all grow together

if the Cubs decide, for some ridiculous notion, that they could be legit contenders next season with a bunch of high priced veterans then I'm going to hope that they leave him in AAA for at least one more season, or even better make him bench coach in Chicago for a season or 2

the headlines weren't that bad were they?

JulieDiCaro said:

ha. Of course not. And a huge thank you to everyone who has been helping out. I really appreciate it.

You still haven't received your new computer?

JulieDiCaro said:

nope. It's been 'in production' for 5 days.

Dell does that on their new machines. I always buy refurbs from them - never had a problem, cheapest prices ever, and tend to ship in a day or two.

How are they delivering it?

In other random news, the Reds have acquired Cubs nemesis/Former Cub Jim Edmonds from the Milwaukee Brewers. It just keeps getting better!!

flyball said:

user-pic

you know, when the Cards win the division it hurts, but makes sense, but the Reds in first place just seems weird

Cubs Psychologist said:

No joke, FB. Try living in KY when that happens. They are still hanging on the the "Nasty Boys" down here.

JulieDiCaro said:

I don't understand why people keep thinking Jim Edmonds is the answer to their problems.

gravedigger said:

I'm bookmarking this. When Jim Edmonds hits the game winning home run in WS game 7, I'll pull it up as a reminder to you.

maybe he's the new Kenny Lofton?

How are you?

Perkins said:

Tore my ACL about 5 weeks ago, still waiting for surgery. Other than that, not bad. How's everything on your end?

Perkins said:

Colvin can play all three OF positions, and the organization is thinking about switching him to 1B. Yeah, that sounds about right.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Colvin made a really good catch in one of his first games with the Cubs last year, and I think that conditioned a lot of us to think he was a better defender than he is. I don't think losing his glove in the outfield would be the death knell to any team, and his arm isn't scaring anyone. That said, it would be nice if he could play first, but it wouldn't solve much either.

Perkins said:

user-pic

I'm not saying he'll be the next Edmonds, but I think it's ridiculous to torpedo his value before it's absolutely necessary. It's not like the Cubs are going anywhere for a couple years anyway.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

My response got Chicago Now'd. The truncated version is that it's not that big a torpedo in value, especially since the Cubs have had a replacement-level first baseman this year. They're more likely to find a decent addition to the outfield (whether via free agency or the farm system) than they are a suitable first baseman.

Perkins said:

user-pic

I meant that his overall value would take a hit due to the positional adjustment from OF to 1B (for the defensive part of WAR), though I agree that the Cubs would be more likely to add value in the OF this offseason (thinking Carl Crawford, though that's not going to happen).

AndCounting said:

user-pic

That's what was frustrating. I actually calculated what his WAR would be at 1b as compared to RF. It wasn't that big of a hit, mostly because A) his PA's are limited, and B) he's played mostly in the corner spots as opposed to center. If he can hit this well and play center, that's a great value (especially if they deal Byrd) but I wonder if his offseason bulk-up has limited his mobility at all.

Perkins said:

user-pic

Hell, the Cubs could have traded Byrd's extremely team-friendly contract and found out this season. And they'd have gotten prospects! I'm amazed at the self-denial (or more likely, deception) the front office has shown. At least if it's deception, they know what they're doing.

Cj-

Just out of curiosity, do you still have our preseason division winners?

If this takes more than 1 second to answer, its not needed, I was just curious, bc I dont remember if I picked the braves or giants as the wildcard.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Wow, I didn't make a prediction. Hmm. I seem to remember doing one of these and picking the Cubs for dead last or 5th or something. Damn.

Dmband said:

thanks!!!

Cant believe I picked the cubs....god...idiot.

Dmband said:

Have you guys heard the sexy pick this year is the Reds?

Am I missing something?
