Cubs Live Game Thread: Lou Will Manage His Last Game Today

After the bullpen nearly ruined another good start, the Cubs managed to hold on and break their eight-game home losing streak yesterday.

Gorzelanny (7-7) tossed 7 innings of 1-run ball, equaling his longest outing of the season. His 9 strikeouts were 1 shy of his career best, which he set May 2 against Arizona. He walked a pair.

The Evergreen Park native wouldn't say it was the best stuff he's had all year.

"No, I wouldn't," he said. "I think I've had maybe a couple of better games. It was one of the games where I was pounding the zone and attacking hitters. It was the game plan I want to do every time out. Sometimes I don't. I'm not able to do it."

Fukudome continues to hit well in his "look at me, I'm tradeable" tour.

Getting a chance to play, presumably as a showcase, Fukudome is hitting .340 in August with two homers and seven RBIs, compared with a .162 average in June.

Today's game starts at 1:20 pm Central and features Mike Minor (0-1, 3.75) against Randy Wells (5-11, 4.44). It's on WGN tv and radio.

UPDATE: Today will be Lou's last game as Cubs' manager. According to NBC Sports, he's going home to take care of his mother:

"My mom needs me home," Piniella said. "She hasn't gotten any better since I've been here. She's had a couple other complications, and rather than continue to go home, come back, it's not fair to the team, it's not fair to the players. So the best thing is just to step down and go home and take care of my mother."

YIKES.

Uh. . .  it's been fun?

Lou is ouuuuttaaaaaaa heeeeeeerrrre.

Sorry I just purchased the Harry Kalas and Bob Uecker Baseball Voices CDs.

I'm sick of this team... why the hell does Koyie Hill continue to get regular playing time?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I don't know. They should just DFA Koyie and let Castillo and Chirinos play.

Perhaps they are showcasing him for a trade.

So, does this mean we get a manager sooner rather than later? Or is Trammell interim manager for the rest of the season?

Damn, this season really sucks.

Quade according to Muskat's Twitter

Uh. . . what?

Why?

Len and Bob reporting that Trammell was told he would not be considered as a candidate for the managerial position next year.

I can't help but think that if Lou had stepped down before the All Star break, the Cubs might, just might have had a chance to do better this year. I'm guessing it's Trammel for the rest of the season ....

JulieDiCaro said:

Oh, why the hell is Baker in RF? Colvin is sitting AGAIN?

baturkey said:

Colvin is a first baseman now!

Edelweiss said:

They are also trying to trade Baker. Also, bench players need some starts in order to not be stale when they come in to pinch hit. That has always been Lou's philosophy.

Quade is the manager because Trammel is not being considered a successor for Piniella, according to Hendry.

Sounds like Piniella's mom is in her last days. Hoping she either pulls through or spends her last days comfortable and with her family.

Looks like it's going to be one of those games where it's back and forth until the Cubs decide to give up and get blown out. Oh, wait. That's EVERY game this season.

DLee looks weird in a Braves uniform...

Edelweiss said:

Fontenot looks cute in a uniform that says GIANTS in big letters on the front, and huge numbers on the back. Some of the other players appear to have smaller numbers, and I'm not sure if it is Mikey's size or the actual height of the numbers.

Godspeed, Lou! We'll miss you. At least I will.

baturkey said:

I don't think Lou will miss this team, though.

Edelweiss said:

Lou's team was taken away from him, player by player, and there was no reason for him to remain.

sloan peterson said:

Okay, the Cubs have now moved beyond sucking-they are hoovering...

cadarnell said:

well ... given their effort today, I don't think a lot of these guys cared all that much for Lou. You would think we would have seen some better play out of the guys that have been there with him the last four years .. I really think, for what ever reason, that Lou lost this team this season and today was, at least in part, them just thumbing their collective nose at him ... I do wish him and his family the best..... On the Trammel thing ... I don't think he was ever going to be the guy anyway ... it should be Girardi or Sandberg.

Proggy said:

I'm pretty certain that the problem today was not that the Cubs were thumbing their nose at a manager they didn't particularly care for, but that they're not very good at baseball while the team they were playing is.

But maybe I'm just crazy here.

Edelweiss said:

The team is coming apart at the seams, and there is now no anchor. Since the team will be mostly Iowa Cubs, Sandberg should be the logical choice for 2111 manager.

Proggy said:

user-pic

I don't think Sandberg will want to manage on Neptune.
