Cubs Saturday Headlines & Game Thread: Cubs @ Cards, 3:10 PM CDT

The rookies keep playing, and for most of them, my only thought is, "Don't we have any better rookies?" Thomas Diamond  once again showed why he didn't make the team when the roster had decent pitchers.

On the mound was Thomas Diamond (0-3), and it was another short night for the big right-hander, who lasted 4 innings, giving up 6 hits and 4 runs.

The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Marlon Byrd, but Diamond ran his pitch count to 86 over his 4 innings.

Albert Pujols homered in the first for the Cardinals. It was his 29th homer. The Cardinals scored twice in the third and once in the fourth.

"The first couple innings were all right, and just from there, location went out the window," Diamond said.

Lou Piniella wasn't impressed, either.

"He wasn't really sharp," Piniella said of Diamond. "I expected him to pitch better today. St. Louis is a good ballclub, and they have a good lineup. He just wasn't sharp. Behind. Wasn't locating well. We'll see. No decision's going to need to be made today."

One rookie who's done everything but disappoint is Starlin Castro, who could find himself in the thick of the NL batting race.

Here's a little something to mull over: Can Starlin Castro win the batting title, and if so, would that win him Rookie of the Year honors? The Cubs shortstop is 17 plate appearances shy of qualifying for the leader board. His .320 batting average would put him behind league leader Carlos Gonzalez (.322) and Placido Polanco (.321) and ahead of Joey Voto (.319), Martin Prado (.315), Marlon Byrd (.310) and Albert Pujols (.310).

Castro is batting .408 since July 10, going 49-for-120. He's got 17 multihit games in that time, as well.

His overall line is .320/.366/.450. The BABIP is .362, and the ISO is .129. Castro's WAR is 2.4.

Castro's walk rate is 6.2 percent, and the strikeout rate is 14.2 percent, lower than most regulars on the club.

Here are the last bits of news, in nice bullet point form thanks to Gordon Wittenmyer.

The Cubs activated Derrek Lee from the bereavement list Friday and optioned Micah Hoffpauir back to Class AAA Iowa to make room. Lee missed the four-game series in San Francisco to tend to his ailing grandfather.

• Third baseman Aramis Ramirez missed his third straight game because of rib-cage soreness he said had improved Friday. Piniella was optimistic Ramirez would return to the lineup today.

• Jeff Baker was in Friday's original lineup at third base until he experienced back pain during early pregame work. He's day-to-day.

• Darwin Barney made his major-league starting debut Friday at second base with Blake DeWitt taking Baker's place at third.

Today's game is a late afternoon start at 3:10 Central. We'll get to see Carlos Zambrano (3-6, 5.46) against Chris Carpenter (13-3, 2.89). The game is on Fox, which probably means we'll be graced with the broadcasting presence of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. It should be spectacular, especially since they're playing the Cards. You may want to keep you WGN-tuned radio nearby.

I am the least excited I could ever be about Zambrano vs Carpenter, Cubs vs Cards. This is because, upon Julie's recommendation, I purchased The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo. And also because the Cubs make me cry.

You'll be dying to read the next two immediately after.

Hey, thanks for doing the headlines, Carl!

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

Not a problem. I was up early, so I just went with the flow.

Did I miss when Geovany Soto got hurt? He hasn't played in a week.

Umbra said:

I specialize in answering my own questions.

Ligament Sprain in right shoulder, placed on 15-day DL retroactive to August 6th.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Yeah--no one even noticed.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I haven't been paying close attention, but I feel like I should have noticed that.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

WHAT? Castro is two points behind in the batting race?

Why is this the first I'm hearing of this?

Umbra said:

user-pic

Castro is batting .319. NL leader Carlos Gonzalez is batting .324.

However, Castro isn't currently qualified to win the batting title. He has 343 PA's, and the Cubs have played 116 games. So he'd need 360 to qualify. But he'll qualify by the end of the season, provided the Cubs play him and aren't victims of 30 perfect games.

I haven't brought it up because I hate batting average with every fiber of my being.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

While I agree, Umbra, we have very, very little else going on here to get excited about.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

i didn't know it either. most likely because I can't stand to watch this sack-o-craptastics pretend to play baseball anymore.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Exactly.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

yeah. . . i got that from reading the article. :P

Goddammit, I get Rays/Orioles. I live in the northeast, not the southeast!

Umbra said:

user-pic

If it makes you feel better, my TV is the wrong size or the digital-to-analog converter is messed up, because it cuts off half of the little scorekeeper in the corner.

Yikes, you missed a lazer comebacker through the box that Carpenter caught.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Also what we get, but it makes more sense here.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

Yeah, I'm getting Giants/Padres here. If I wanted, I could watch little Fontenot, except I already watched him for 2 or 3 seasons too many.

Umbra said:

user-pic

We get Kenny Albert, not Joe Buck. I don't know what to think of this: the other guy whose name I didn't catch made the dubious claim that if the St. Louis Cardinals play well THIS WEEK, then they will keep their lead in the NL Central, and if they don't, they won't.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

well looky there... Aramis showed up!

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

hmm... they seemed to find extra bases... wow.

Umbra said:

user-pic

It's not too often the Cubs manage to do that well vs Carpenter.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

i'm about sick of listening to these damned announcers making excuses for Carpenter stemming from the fight. wft ever. maybe he just sucks today.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

i just woke up. . . who's playing RF?

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

according to your lineup, the Fuk.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

and as far as i know, it's correct.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

no way. . . Kosuke can't make a catch like that!

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

it's actually Bizzaro Kosuke.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

he made another catch!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

the Cubs paid some random Asian guy to wear the uni.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

hmm...Big Z's TOOTBLANing.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

harry pavilidis has dubbed it a "ZOOTBLAN"

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

HAHAHAHAHA.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Lou talked to Starlin about taking a day off. Starlin said "when you're poor, you don't take days off."

SNIFF!

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

whatever. I take days off. and he isn't poor. I'm poorer than he is. maybe he talked to Crash Davis on the ride over from the hotel and worked on his cliches.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

no, he WAS poor before he go signed to play baseball. that was the point. like, when you get paid by the hour/day to work, you don't take days off.

DOUBLE SNIFF!

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

oh. I thought he was posturing to get a better contract. hahaha

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

you're so jaded.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

i've been told that before... I wonder if i should pay attention to it...

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

that's what i thought.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

Zootblan is out, and I figured in honor of our spectacularly rookie-staffed bullpen, I'd pull out the rally noodle pic. Of course, the picture of Therinot was no longer meaninful.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

who really gives a shit what LaRussa does after the game?

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

in unrelated comments, I'm very much looking forward to the roast of David Hasselhoff tomorrow night.

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

Let's go team!

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

user-pic

Sean Marshall just gave him something he could shove up his Pujols. Called strike three!

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

the Big Smooth strikes again. I may have a man-crush on Marshall.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

SIT DOWN, ALBERT!

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

STOOTBLANs?

secdelahc said:

user-pic

Remind me again: What happens when our team scores more runs than their team?

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

user-pic

Sno cones for everyone! And you can get a suicide one if you want.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

It sounds like my question might be a moot point with the way this inning is going so far.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

we normally lose by 1 run in the other team's final AB

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

Marmol always makes it interesting. usually he doesn't need help though.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

miles has a .313 average? how is that possible?

secdelahc said:

user-pic

he only has 84 at bats. If only he could've played that little for us.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

i think he was a plant.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Do we want a Bears game thread tonight?

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

i'll be watching a local band, so i'll miss it.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Isn't it August? They're playing?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

first preseason game is tonight.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Wow. Seems so early

Umbra said:

user-pic

Jay Cutler only has 2 passes and plays one series? That's weak sauce.
