Cubs Don't Lose Thursday; Continue Unbeaten Streak

Thumbnail image for cubsfanscelbreate.jpg

Far be it for me to rain on anyone's Friday, but the name "Jeff Samardjiza" is starting to pop up a little too often for me to be comfortable:

Samardzija is pitching for the Cubs' Class AAA Iowa team, and he's working again as a starter after opening this season in the big club's bullpen.

Heading into Thursday night's start at Omaha, Samardzija was 10-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 32 games, 12 starts, in the minor leagues.

When he went to Iowa on April 14, he wasn't happy, and he went back as a reliever. Things have settled at long last, and if all goes well he could get a start or two for the Cubs in September.

Good Lord. Can't we just leave him at Iowa, marvel at his success, and be happy? Why do we have to call him up and ruin it?

In other off-day news, the Cubs interviewed Eric Wedge for the managing vacancy. I'm assuming Wedge and Hendry bonded over stories of being abused by Milton Bradley.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry met with former Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge on Wednesday night about the Cubs' managerial job, sources confirmed Thursday.

Wedge managed the Cleveland Indians from 2003-09, leading the Indians to the American League championship series in 2007. The Indians blew a 3-1 lead in that series and fell in seven games to the Boston Red Sox.

The 42-year-old Wedge compiled a record of 561-573 during his tenure in Cleveland.

Uh, Jim? I'm not sure why we're interviewing anyone. We're 3-0 under Quade. Hello?

So let's see. . . the Cubs head into Cincy tonight, where they hope to play the role of spoiler in the race to the top of the NL Central. Cincy currently leads the Cards by 3.5 games. This means, if we win, we help the Cardinals. If we lose, we help Captain Toothpick the Reds.

Seems like a good time to root for vaporization.

It's Friday, and you know what that means! Podcasts, podscasts, podcasts!!! At 10:30 am CT this morning, I'll be a guest on the B-Squared Show. Then Wrigley Talk Friday is up at 1:00 pm CT. On Sunday, Throwing Like a Girl is up at 8:30 pm CT. At 10:00 on Sunday, I kill myself because I've created a life for myself that involves talking about the Cubs 3 times every weekend.

It's Friday: Let's have your iPod 5.

Mine:

I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You: Colin Hay

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday: The Stones

What Part Of Forever: Cee Lo Green (yes, I know it's off the Twilight soundtrack, but it was written by this really cool Chicago musician named Rob Kliner who reminds me a bit of Simple Minds)

Rise: Eddie Vedder

Sex on Fire: Kings of Leon

We're only 17.0 back in the Wild Card.

Sliding - dZihan & Kamien
Funky Music - Hardy Hard
Don't Ask Me To Explain - Of Montreal
Fuck This Town - Robbie Fulks
Can't Buy Me Love - The Beatles

Oh, that reminds me here are the top 10 Beatles songs according to Rolling Stone:
10. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
9. Come Together
8. Let It Be
7. Hey Jude
6. Something
5. In My Life
4. Yesterday
3. Strawberry Fields Forever
2. I Want to Hold Your Hand
1. A Day in the Life

I'm shocked- I actually agree with Rolling Stone-even with the order!!

flyball said:

user-pic

Rolling Stone is wrong, only 1 early song, ok 2 if you count Yesterday which I guess should be. and While My Guitar Gently Weeps for the token White Album song? so not the best song on that album

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I think Rolling Stone's preference for the later songs is not so much that the early stuff wasn't good, it's after Rubber Soul, the Beatles pulled away from the other British bands like the Kinks,Hollies,Stones,Moody Blues, and were challenging Dylan and Brian Wilson in song craft. Some of my favorite early Beatles stuff is their cover songs, and both Lennon and Mccartney said they based their vocals on American Girl groups like the Shirelles, and Ronettes...

flyball said:

user-pic

I have a love of early Beatles and think their later stuff sometimes overshadows the good work they did prior to Rubber Soul

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Uh, as far as that picure goes, not losing =/= winning.

Doc said:

user-pic

The truth is, right now, winning actually is losing for the Cubs because it means a crappier draft pick.

flyball said:

user-pic

can you show me that the #1 draft pick has helped teams over the long run vs the #5 draft pick? or the #5 over the #10?

Doc said:

user-pic

I think having multiple years of high draft picks helps teams. Unlike football or basketball, one player often times can't flip a team or an organization around. Being able to scout and select players well in all rounds of the draft leads to success...or at least leads to getting prospects that you can trade for crappy veterans.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

doesn't matter when the Cubs take 7th rounders with their #1 draft pick.

flyball said:

user-pic

I wish they would trade for 2nd round picks, or at least a lower first round pick, so as not to have to pay top pick money

they should save that cash for something else

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

user-pic

For whatever reason, you can't trade picks in MLB like you can in the other major sports.

flyball said:

user-pic

this makes me sad

Doc said:

user-pic

That might change soon.

IPOD 5:
"Jane"-Jefferson Starship
"Ice Cream Man"-Van Halen
"Goody 2 Shoes"- Adam Ant
"Dead Giveaway"- shalimar
"Let The Day Begin" The Call

Doc said:

user-pic

I can't wait for the Cubs to go 37-0 under Mike Quade...

and then they go out and hire Eric Wedge and finish in last place next year.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Ugh - Strassburg has a "significant tear" in his elbow ligament and needs Tommy John surgery.

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

user-pic

Only the good require surgery young.

Doc said:

user-pic

As much as I want to blame Jim Riggleman...I just can't. The Nationals did everything they possibly could to protect Strasburg, and he still broke. These phenom pitchers just aren't worth it.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

That seems pretty much true.

But how much do you think Riggleman wants to hang himself. Kerry Wood, now this.

Doc said:

user-pic

I'm fairly sure Jim Riggleman should just hang himself because he's, flat out, a bad manager.

flyball said:

user-pic

we'll have no talk like that

gravedigger said:

user-pic

why not?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

remember when Mark was becoming a Nats fan?

bwaahahahahahaha

Doc said:

user-pic

The Nats need to start their rebuilding process all over again...

and it is BECAUSE they drafted Stephen Strasburg. I'm not sure what else they should have done, but if they had drafted someone else, the process probably would have been further along than it will be at the end of this season.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Yes, they started their downward spiral right around that time. Fucking figures.

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

Fivers:
Taste of Blood: Mazzy Star
Minding My Own Business: Coconut Records
No Better: Jonatha Brooke & The Story
Central Reservation (Ben Watt Remix): Beth Orton
A Midsummer Night's Dream - 5.Notturno: Mendelssohn

flyball said:

user-pic

and Mendelssohn! you all have excellent choices today

HackWilson09 said:

"While You Were Sleeping" - Elvis Perkins
"Wake Up" - Arcade Fire
"Astral Weeks" - Van Morrison
"My Uncle Used to Love Me But She Died" - Roger Miller
"Aloha Ka Manini" - The Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band w/ Ry Cooder

Too bad about Strasburg, but anything that keeps Boras in check is kind of a good thing, and we won't have to see him in the ESPN headlines every 5th day anymore.

flyball said:

user-pic

Astral Weeks = Me happy

Doc said:

user-pic

five blah blah...

Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
With a Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker
It's not over ('Til it's over) - Starship
Tom Sawyer - Rush
The Grand Finale - Styx

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Like the Starship choice! growing up the Jefferson Airplane/Starship were one of those bands I didn't have to buy records for because they were on the radio so much. Same thing with Styx....

Doc said:

user-pic

I'm a closet Starship fan...but I am, unfortunately, quite the Styx fan which opens me up to much ridicule.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Good Lord, you almost made it through a list without Styx.

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Everyone should have at least 1 Styx song on their Ipod-even if it's an obscure one like,"Plexiglas Toilet".(The Serpent is Rising, their 3rd album)

Doc said:

user-pic

Plexiglass Toilet technically isn't a song by itself...as it is actually an add-on to "As Bad As This"...a song which is quite appropriate for the Cubs this season.

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I know that it was a "secret" track- Dr. Demeto used to play it all the time and even interviewed Dennis DeYoung about it-he really didn't want to talk about it too much. Actually if I had 1 Styx song it would probably be... nah I need 3: "Lorilei",Grand Illusion", & "Sing for the Day."

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

DR. DEMENTO.. I know.(sigh)

Doc said:

user-pic

DeYoung doesn't like to talk about anything with the "Serpant is Rising" or "Man of Miracles" albums. He considers them an embarrassment. (But not "Kilroy was Here"?)

Doc said:

user-pic

Well, The Grand Finale was actually the first song to come up on my list, but it didn't make any sense for me to put if first when listing it here. :)

"Into the Mystic" - Van Morrison
"Outfit" - Drive By Truckers
"Yeah Yeah Yeah" - New Politics
