Wednesday Chicago Cubs Headlines/Live Game Thread: OMG OMG OMG!

Our hero.

Don't look now kids, but THE CHICAGO CUBS HAVE A WINNING STREAK!

PHOENIX -- The Cubs beat Arizona 6-4 Tuesday night for their first back-to-back wins since June 16-17 against Oakland.

Two home runs by Aramis Ramirez paced the offense, while Carlos Silva pitched six strong innings to improve to 9-2. The Cubs clinched a road series for only the third time in 2010, and won back-to-back road games for the first time since May 22-23 at Texas.

So what if the Bulls are going to miss out on LeBron, Wade, and Bosh? ARAMIS RAMIREZ HIT TWO HOMERUNS LAST NIGHT!!!! Although, to be fair, one of the, was against Aaron Heilman, so I'm not sure that it really counts. Alas, while we wait to see Aramis hit against a real pitcher before passing judgment on his "backness," Aramis sounds more confident:

"Of course," he said. "I've never been that bad in my life. I don't think I'm that kind of hitter. I think I'm a decent hitter. I've been good through the years. Hopefully I take this game and just take off."

Ramirez had his first two-homer game since August 23, 2008, driving in four runs in the Cubs' 6-4 win over Arizona. He said he swung the bat better on Monday, when the D'Backs outfielders robbed him of a pair of extra base hits.

"I just got better results today," he said. "But I got four good at-bats (Monday)."
The sore left thumb still hasn't improved, but Ramirez said he plans to play through it for the rest of the season.

And, if you're enjoying the youngins like Tyler Colvin, Starlin Castro, and Andrew Cashner, you'll be happy to know that top prospect Josh Vitters is coming along nicely:

Third baseman Josh Vitters moved up to No. 3 in the Tennessee (AA) lineup yesterday in a 3-1 loss to Huntsville. With Ty Wright having moved up to Iowa (AAA), Smokies manager Bill Dancy decided to move Vitters up.

"That's where he should be hitting normally," Dancy told Nick Gates of the Knoxville News Sentinel. "He's got his feet on the ground here and had enough at-bats here. Let's see what he can do."

http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2010/jul/05/right-fit-for-wright-spot/

Vitters was 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch. At Double-A, he's at .227/.292/.351 with 4 homers, 17 RBI, 9 walks and 27 strikeouts. The Smokies went with a top-of-the-order of Tony Campana, Brett Jackson, Vitters and Robinson Chirinos. Had a chance to ask Oneri Fleita about Campana last week. He described the 5-foot-8 Campana as "a pest" and a player reminiscent of former left-handed hitting outfielder John Cangelosi.

Chris Carpenter took the loss, working 6 innings and giving up 3 hits and 2 earned runs. He's 6-4 with a 3.16 ERA.

Hey, looks like we have a third baseman coming up right at the time our current thirs baseman is breaking down.  That's handy.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much fun this was last night. A few more of these, and we're right back in this thing, baby!

The ninth inning began with the Colorado Rockies down six runs and ended with him rounding the bases and getting mobbed by his delirious teammates following a colossal comeback for the history books.

"It's just one of those things, tomorrow he could come out and be nails and we go three up and three down."

No team in the modern era had ever scored nine runs in the bottom of the ninth to win a game, according to STATS LLC, whose data goes back to 1918. Just six weeks ago, the Atlanta Braves trailed Cincinnati 9-3 before scoring seven times in the bottom of the ninth.

The Rockies did them two runs better.

The Cubs are back at it again tonight at 8:40 pm CT against the DBacks.

Tonight I'll be at Rebel Bar & Grill for the "Are You Chicago Now's Smartest Blogger?" trivia contest, along with a host of ChicagoNow's bloggers. Stop by and show off your smarts!

update: apparently there is a game today and we're all too friggen lazy to post a new thread, so use this one.  Though it won't really matter.  They're going to lose anyway. - gravedigger

I'm not as emotionally attached to the Bulls as I am the Cubs & Bears but I still have that pit in my stomach feeling about losing out on all 3 big FA's. What is so unappealing about the Chi and Rose/Noah? Stupid $$, don't athletes want to WIN!

A chance to play with a NBA superstar who has won a championship and a solid power forward in a warm-weather celeb-filled city vs. a chance to play with an up-and-coming (who will likely be elite, but can't predict yet) and an overrated forward in a city where he'll have to live in the shadow of one of the NBA's all-time players.

That's the decision LeBron's facing. The smart move would be to go to Miami, but I don't think anyone really knows. Guess we'll all find out on the Worldwide Leader tomorrow night.

Didn't even think about that...good point, b.

that's also true in Texas, as far as the Mavs go

Now we know that if the players stop jerking off just before game time, they have a chance to win. But we now also know how Aramis hurt his thumb.

Ive been thinking this for a while, but now I'm gonna say it. I think Edelweiss is Carrie Muskat.

It looks like things are getting interesting on the Northside.

Plamorte, it's not all about winning (as one would think). It's about the city as well. There is more trouble to get into in Miami as opposed to Chicago. Plus, Chicago is cold!! Though not at this moment.

I love me some trade rumors! Also, this:

"A few weeks ago Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News heard that the Giants could have interest in Ryan Theriot, but the Giants now say Theriot's name hasn't come up in trade talks."

Interest as in, "Hey, we're interested in wondering why you guys still bat Theriot leadoff. Are we missing something?"

Cubs Psychologist said:

Good one. I still wonder that myself.

Maybe they are looking for a restaurant critic.

Stats LLC only goes back to 1918, but I happen to recall that the Detroit Tigers, in their very first game back in 1901, were down 13-4 entering the bottom of the 9th inning, and came back to win 14-13. And I've found a source to prove it:
http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/det/history/timeline.jsp (first entry)

As such, I have commented on the yahoo article and hope they will issue a correction.

Speaking of Detroit, I just read they sent Galaragga down to the minors. Basically, since the blown call, he's has been...not so good. So now, he's in the minors. That must really help the self-esteem.

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

He wasn't exactly Cy Young-like before the blown call, either.

Cubs Psychologist said:

user-pic

This is true. But, you have to wonder how his confidence would have been if the correct call was made. We all know about the importance of confidence in a pitcher.

In one of the funniest things Ive heard all year news:

Kevin Millar was on the SCORE this morning and basically said, and Im paraphrasing, that if he was on the team they would be much better because he would

A)take them all out for steak dinners
B)have BBQ's.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Im dead serious, he actually said and thinks that.

Maybe he could invite all of them to a picnic at his place. I bet Zambrano brings the coleslaw

Kevin Millar also thinks his hair is a good idea. Let's consider the source here, shall we?

I love that Aramis is as befuddled as we are and talked about himself as if he's been watching from the stands. It's like, "When I saw me hit, I swore it must be someone else. Because that guy sucks, and last time I checked I was pretty good. I'm going to go investigate."

secdelahc said:

The Cubs have looked decent on offense the past couple of days. However, the DBacks are also one of the worst teams in the league, and leading everyone in strikeouts, so I'm taking all of this with a grain of salt.

The Pirates are worse and owned us! So there! (ahh ok you win)

gravedigger said:

I'm sorry, but when the Cubs go up against a bad team, I feel pretty confident that they will lose in new and embarrassing ways.

Edelweiss said:

When they stopped abusing themselves, they started to hit.
