A League of Her Own

George Steinbrenner Dead At 80: RIP Boss

Love him or hate him, he was endlessly entertaining. And he changed baseball.

Known as "The Boss" for his tempestuous style, Steinbrenner was loved by Yankees fans and hated by his rivals. He resurrected the most successful franchise in U.S. sports from a period of decline, returning it to glory in the 1970s.

His family and baseball club announced his death but did not give a cause. Media reports said he suffered a massive heart attack at his home in Tampa and was rushed to hospital.

Steinbrenner demanded results and got them as the Yankees won seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants since he bought the fabled club in 1973.

He was twice suspended from baseball--once for making illegal campaign contributions to President Richard Nixon's 1972 re-election campaign and then for hiring a private investigator to dig up information on one of his players.

Hey kids, if you had to pick one team that you think would have an interest in a broken-down, devoid of life (or a fastball) Mark Prior, which one would it be?

The Orioles do have some interest in Mark Prior after scout Mark Ralston watched him throw at USC on June 30, but they believe that he prefers to remain on the West Coast. Not that Prior can be particularly choosy, considering that he hasn't pitched in the majors since 2006. The Orioles will keep an eye on him.

I predict this will work out well for both Prior and the team until, the day of his major league re-debut, a Cold War era Russian spy satellite will fall out of the sky, land on Prior's throwing arm, and send him back underground for another 3 years.

Finally this morning, Bruce Miles recaps the horrible first half of a putrid season:

First baseman Derrek Lee drove over a cliff in the first half with a hitting line of .233/.329/.366, down from his full-season line of .306/.393/.579 last year. Lee has called his bad back a "nonissue," but one wonders how much it's bothering him since his slow starts in the past have never lasted a half-season.

Second baseman Ryan Theriot hasn't come close to matching his career year of 2008, when he sported an on-base percentage of .387. These days, Theriot struggles to keep his OBP much above .300, and he has virtually no extra-basehit ability.

Well hey, Bruce, that trip down memory road was lots of fun. What else ya got for us?

Quick, can you name the Cubs' bullpen members on Opening Day other than veterans Carlos Marmol, John Grabow and Sean Marshall?

The answer would be James Russell, Justin Berg, Esmailin Caridad and Jeff Samardzija.

For all his experience, Grabow was no great shakes, and the kids did the best they could, but they weren't ready for pressure-packed roles.

Chalk it up to an area left overexposed by general manager Jim Hendry, who last year didn't have the requisite infield depth after Ramirez dislocated his shoulder in May.

Samardzija was sent to the minor leagues on April 24 and hasn't been back. Russell has pitched creditably, as has Berg at times, but both logged time in the minors this year.

For some reason, the Cubs handed Caridad a job early in spring training. He was ineffective, wound up hurt and hasn't been heard from since going on the disabled list for a third time on May 19.

Yeah Bruce, I think we're all pretty familiar with exactly how this team managed to sabotage themselves. . .  is there any hope?

Oh. I guess that's the end of the article.

Okay then.

Chin up, kids! Perhaps George Steinbrenner will be reincarnated as one of the Ricketts grandchildren and will grow up, buy the team, and buy the equivalent of the 1927 Yankees to lead the Cubs to a World Series!

No?

Well then, I guess all we've got is the All-Star Game tonight. See you then.

I'm watching. I need to know if I'll be attending three World Series games at Wrigley or 4.

JulieDiCaro said:

Exactly.

My thinking is that we might as well watch decent baseball whenever we get the chance.

I don't always get to watch it all, but I do enjoy it. The MLB All-Star Game is my favorite of all the sports all-star games. It's the best players (w/ a few exceptions) in my favorite sport playing to the top of their abilities. That just doesn't happen in the other leagues. They all relent on defense. NBA, few blocks or fouls. NHL, no fights and very little serious checking. NFL, no sacks and now no one who even makes it to the Super Bowl. The only area that isn't played to its highest potential is the management of the game, but in one game's time, that doesn't detract very much at all from the level of competition. The MLB All-Star Game is probably the most talent-filled, best-played game every year in all of sports.

I know I sound like a freaking Selig disciple, but it's true. The production of the broadcast might be a syrupy schlock fest, but the game itself is cool.

I watched the Home Run Derby, the celebrity game, and would watch the red carpet show, except I am at work. I will miss the beginning, hopefully not anything too good. I even watch the old ones on MLB Network....

All-star games are all silly, even with the "now it counts" malarkey.

The All-Star game pre-game (with the sound off, lest Joe Morgan or Chris Berman invade my ears) is watchable, if only to see which Hall of Famer they will cart out (literally on a golf cart).

Give me an Old-Timers game, and I'd actually watch that. We used to have those at the old Met Stadium (usually the front-end of a double-header).

gravedigger said:

user-pic

First, I agree with this.

Second, I feel like we haven't seen you around these parts in forever.

Max Power said:

user-pic

It is true. A couple of times per year, I tend to be completely enveloped by work.

Right now, though, I'm more worried about piranhas. Did you see that movie where they send a nuclear submarine to fight the piranhas, and one of them swims right down the periscope and bites the guy in the eye, and he goes, 'Aah! Aah! Aah!,' and that old lady told him it would happen?

I posted this on FB already, but I don't think I have a single memory of Steinbrenner that's ACTUALLY George Steinbrenner. I think they're all memories of Larry David doing George Steinbrenner.

Doc said:

most my my steinbrenner memories are from the time he hosted SNL. I loved the skit where he ran a convenience store and just was just too nice to fire anyone.

sloan peterson said:

My main memory of Steinbrenner:
1. Billy Martin on Reggie Jackson/Steinbrenner-"One's a born liar, and the other's convicted." Luckily Martin/Steinbrenner made up somewhat before Martin's death.

Also when George worked for Steinbrenner on Seinfeld-the only episodes I ever watched of the show.
I know he was a crook and helped Nixon, but at least he had a passion for the game, and was not a small-minded,quivery,peabrain like McCourt of the Dodgers....

sloan peterson said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I left off that the main reason the Dodgers and LA sportsfools hate the Yankees, is that Steinbrenner was willing and able to spend $$$ just to have such a deep bench. Vin Scully once compared it to a closet full of Van Gogh's.He lived big, spent big, and built a stadium worth the city and the team...

Fangraphs weighs in on Geo's trade value:

Like Montero, Soto is a young, offensive backstop with the ability to stay behind the plate. He’s rebounded from last year’s disappointing sophomore campaign, offering his usual blend of patience and power while inexplicably hitting eighth for the Cubs. Given his ability to drive the ball, he could hit in the middle of the order for most teams, and when you have a 27-year-old cacher who can provide that kind of punch, you have a highly valuable piece. The Cubs will control his rights for three more years, and it shouldn’t take them that long to figure out that he’s better than Koyie Hill.

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

They broadcast (transmit) a signal, and it's processed by whatever hardware is on the other end. It's not broken up into the constituent RGB(Y) colors when it's transmitted, the teevee/satellite/cable device(s) determine how it's displayed.

So yes, theoretically the addition of the Y to the RGB *should* produce exponentially more color gradients. Whether it's discernible by the human eye is a different question...

It was good to watch MLB's best with so much sloppy play. We have a tendancy to think our players are the only ones who mess up, because they are the ones we see on a daily basis, but this occurs throughout baseball. No position player goes error-free, and even the best Tootblan from time to time. (Of course, Theriot makes it a habit).
