Chicago Cubs Independence Day Headlines & Game Thread: Reds @ Cubs, 1:20 Central

The Cubs looked primed to disgust us once again, when a miracle happened. They scored three whole runs in one inning.

Not until the bottom of the sixth, when the Cubs loaded the bases for the third time, did Alfonso Soriano end the drought with a bloop single to left that scored Tyler Colvin. Soriano clapped his hands triumphantly, and the crowd of more than 40,000 cheered as though a series had been won.

''Finally I got a hit with a runner in scoring position,'' a relieved Soriano said after the Cubs' 3-1 victory ended a three-game losing streak. ''We had runners in scoring position the whole game. Sometimes you hit the ball so hard, and you just get outs. Then you get a bloop hit. That's baseball.''

So to what do we owe this offensive explosion?

One day after saying "sometimes less is more" for struggling hitters, Cubs manager Lou Piniella tried the "less" approach for Saturday's noon start against the Reds.

"We didn't take any batting practice, any (batting) cage work. We just got loose and played," he said.

The result was 10 hits and a 3-1 victory, although the Cubs stranded 17 runners.

So will the Cubs skip batting practice again Sunday morning?

"I'll talk to the hitting coach (Rudy Jaramillo) and let him decide," Piniella said.

And we all know that the offense and defense have been the weak spots for the team this year, but this homestand has just highlighted that fact.

Cubs pitchers have a 1.80 ERA (11 earned runs in 55 innings) through the first six games of the homestand. The starters have been even stronger, with a 1.59 ERA to the relievers' 2.35 mark.

But while the Cubs' pitching ranks among the top six in the NL, their hitting has been an albatross. The Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates are the only teams in the NL that have scored fewer runs than the Cubs.

Today's game is at 1:20 PM Central and is on WGN and WGN radio. It'll be Mike Leake (5-1, 3.30) against Ted Lilly (3-6, 3.12).

The Pirates have scored fewer runs than the Cubs this season? So this must seriously mean that when Pittsburgh is playing anyone other than Chicago, they are never scoring. Only against us. Awesome.

Is HE still around???

You know those people who always say that pitching wins championships? They never take into account what happens if you have pitching but no hitting. I mean_ we HAVE pitcching, I don't see us winning any championships.

Good pitching beats good hitting, but mediocre pitching beats bad hitting. That's our problem.

Let's be honest. Ted Lilly trumps them all (good pitching, hitting, coaching)...is there a better bday present for America than a certain 5'10" lefty from Torrance?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

he's only 5'10?

(disappointment sets in)

Ted Lilly Fan Club said:

We've seen listings from 5'10 to 6'1...but Reds should be disappointed that only fireworks they'll see is Ted's Lillyhammer out pitch. Huzzah.

I had the weirdest dream last night. I remember going online and the headlines read that the Cubs had a bazillion hits, but only got two runs. And the final score was 26-2. Sadly, this dream seems somewhat realistic given the season we're experiencing.

At this pace, it looks like my dream may be coming true.

Marlon Byrd is our sole all-star. Condolences to Carlos Marmol.

Also, I thought Soriano deserved to go. He's 6th in the NL OF in OPS, and while his defense hasn't been great, he's having a very nice bounce back season.

Or, I've pissed off the rallymal gods and the Cubs will lose every single game left in the season.

millertime said:

user-pic

I guess that depends on your defenition of "winning". If you're talking about the Cubs scoring more runs than the Reds, then no, not so much.

But since the game got so out of hand, and I stopped watching, I was able to do the dishes and clean my apartment. I think that's a win we can all enjoy.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

No, Julie. The Cubs gave up 14 runs, 7 HRs (3 to the same guy). This really just needs to be the end. Its time for Hendry to blow it up. And if he doesn't, it is time for him to go, too.

On the lighter side.. a couple of days ago Kasper hinted that Brenley is hung. He made a joke about Bob going to the beach in a speedo, and then showed a photoshopped picture of his head on a young man's body. Kasper said, "I've seen IT, and you were strutting" Now for the interesting part...the young man seen from the neck down is a gay man I have seen on the Belmont rocks.

Cubs notwithstanding, it was a great sports weekend... Dale Jr won the Nationwide race in a throwback replica of his father's car, Germany defeated Argentina 4-0, the Cubs won Saturday, and Dale Jr finished 4th at Daytona in the Sprint race. Who needs the Cubs?

Ironic that such for a great sports weekend, the only actual sport out of the things you mentioned was the Cubs game.

Edelweiss said:

There's nothing sporty about the Cubs. In order to be a good baseball fan, you should have interest in other sports. That said, I have no interest in tennis or golf, which are for spoiled rich kids.
