A League of Her Own

Happy LOHO Meetup Eve, Everyone!

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for simpsons.jpg

In approximately 27 hours, LOHOians for all corners of the globe will assemble at Rockit Wrigley in order to (cough) prepare for the day's festivities. Subsequently, we will march, solemnly yet determinedly, towards the hallowed bleacher of Wrigley Field to observe the Chicago National League Ballclub in their quest to defeat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Near That One Denny's Off the Freeway. Don't have a ticket yet? Why the hell not? They're down to $50 on Stubhub.

I'm going to be out and about today, between the USA-Slovenia game, multiple podcasts, and something fun that I might be able to tell you about in the near future. Lo, unless someone else wants to post one, we'll use this as the game thread today as well.

De Precccccciousssss

So, I can't help but notice that it's been a good 14 hours since the game ended yesterday, and I have YET to have THE PPPPRRRRRECIOUSSSS in my hot little hand. What gives, people?

Speaking of precious, we're two games into the rally noodle era, and the Cubs are 2-0. And you'll never believe how it happened:

the Cubs came out winners for a second straight game for the first time in three weeks. The 3-2 victory over the A's on Thursday set off a jubilant celebration after Fukudome's game-winning hit in the ninth inning.

For Fukudome, it must have felt good to contribute. Recently relegated to a bench role, he contributed two late-inning hits that coincided with the arrival of his hitting coach from Japan, Kyosuke Sasaki.

"That's why he's here," Fukudome said. "He definitely has helped."

For a third straight season, Fukudome had watched his average fall after a torrid first month. He had hit just .233 in his last 23 games going back to mid-May.

The game-winner was a bases-loaded single through a drawn-in infield. But it was off left-hander Jerry Blevins, and Fukudome now is 4-for-15 against lefties.

Hey, wasn't Jerry Blevins the original Butthead Lefty Reliever? I believe that he was.

In other Cubs news, it appears the team has signed their number one draft pick, slated 4th-rounder Hayden Simpson:

Pending a physical exam, No. 1 draft pick Hayden Simpson should be in the fold by this weekend as he and the Cubs have agreed to terms. If all goes well, he could even make a Wrigley Field visit this weekend to be introduced to the media.

UPDATE: The reported signing bonus, per Jim Callis of Baseball America, is $1.06 million, or about a half-million below the recommended slot for that spot in the draft.

I don't know much about Simpson, other than the fact that no one else planned on taking him before the 3rd round, but his name is delightfully close to "Homer Simpson." This pleases me.

The Cubs kick off the weekend series against Los Ang. .  Ana . . whatever. You know who I mean. Before we get to the game specifics, let's all take a moment to give thanks and praise to our rally noodle overlord:

Thumbnail image for rallynoodle.jpg

The game today kicks off at 1:20 pm CT, with Cy Young candidate Carlos Silva taking on Scott Kazmir, whose name looks suspiciously communist and who wears red. Just sayin'.

If someone would be kind enough to post the lineup as we near game time, I would be much obliged.

Oh! And don't forget that Julie & Alex's Excellent Sports Adventure is up this afternoon at 12:30 pm. If I finish my secret mission on time, perhaps new podcast partner Rock Mamola and I will be able to throw down over Erin Andrews. After that, it's Wrigley Talk Friday, where I expect we will spend the entire 30 minutes praising the rally noodle for its kindness and benevolence.

Later, Gators. Go Cubs!

It is right to give thanks and praise to our rally noodle overlord.

Oh please don't let the pastafarian jokes start. I promise to renounce pirate jokes forever if it will spare me from having to read about "His noodly appendage".

Speaking of noodly appendages, what are the World Cup matches today?

(there's only one reason I watch)
(it has something to do with noodly appendages)

Umbra said:

Three games today:

Germany already lost to Serbia 0-1.

The USA vs Slovakia game is currently in its 64th minute, with the USA down 2-1. National disgrace.

At 1:30 today, England plays Algeria.

Max Power said:

user-pic

The US got shafted out of a win by a referee that I believe may have been on the Slovenian payroll. The US needs many goals and a win over Algeria next week (an England loss or two would not hurt, or an England-Slovenia tie next week).

flyball said:

user-pic

why is it that I feel there are way more game deciding bad calls in soccer than other sports, is it just the stage? is it that I only hear about them because I never think about soccer? just seems ridiculous

PsyMar1 said:

user-pic

It's probably because you don't watch much soccer, and don't pay attention to basketball (which has plenty of game-deciding bad calls).

flyball said:

user-pic

is there no replay in soccer?

MillsChC said:

user-pic

if you change that to "don't watch any soccer" and "don't pay attention to basketball in the least amount possible"... then you've nailed my sports watching perfectly.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

But the worst call in basketball might swing the score 3 points one way or the other out of 200 or so in the game. A bad call in soccer can eliminate or provide 20-100% of the scoring in the game.

MillsChC said:

user-pic

Here's my generic soccer analysis of the game....

They should've scored more, then an unfortunate bad call by an official wouldn't have mattered.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

No--they should have played better defender. Letting a team like Slovenia score two goals on you is ridiculous.

MillsChC said:

user-pic

I didn't watch one second of the game... that was just my stock sports-radio know-it-all response to seeing people here and elsewhere complaining about a bad call by a ref.

Edelweiss said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Supposedly a US player was offside, but I didn't see the referee hold up the offside flag.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I really don't think Carlos Silva is a Cy Young candidate. Not because he hasn't been really good -- he has -- but because Ubaldo (what an awesome name) Jimenez is far and away the best pitcher this year.

Umbra said:

user-pic

Even if Jimenez wins (and he should, but I give Halladay a shot too), Carlos Silva will still get some votes. Kinda like how Ryan Dempster got some votes two years ago even though no one really thought he was the best.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Oh, sure. I agree. I'm just saying that nobody else in the world (or at least the NL) even needs to think about winning the Cy Young at this point.

flyball said:

user-pic

did I see correctly that he has 13 wins? wow

Umbra said:

user-pic

He's started 14 games, and is 13-1. The one game he lost on May 9, he gave up one run over 7 innings and the Rockies lost 2-0 to the Dodgers.

flyball said:

user-pic

dude, I am going to have to start paying attention to all this other good baseball this season

sloan peterson said:

So Fukudome used his noodle and scored the winning runs?

plamorte said:

Is Erin Andrews going to be there?

Anywho, I'll be there in spirit, have many brews for me and perhaps I can make the next one!

Lineup for today's game (brace yourself):

Tylermania! RF
Baker 3b
Byrd CF
Lee 1b
Soto C
Soriano LF
Castro SS
Preciousssssss 2b
Cylva P

That's a fun lineup.

Umbra said:

user-pic

When did they move Theriot down to 8th? I approve!

AndCounting said:

It's a new day. Colvin in the leadoff spot is pretty interesting. Strikes me a little like Soriano 2.0.

I love training

Dmband said:

USA got hosed. Should've been a 3-2 comeback.

Nonsense.

summerguy said:

user-pic

Its about time they took Theriot out of the leadoff spot, what with him having a .300 OBP and dropping. That is getting close to Pierre and Patterson territory. Especially with an .280 BA

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

I would like to point out that yesterday extends my games-attended Cubs winning streak back to 1982. And in almost all the recent games, they've come from behind from the 7th inning onward. So, I can only assume that my animated, robust, drunken singing of the stretch gets the credit!

summerguy said:

user-pic

Holy crap Teebob... I would say so.

Get this man to the game tomorrow!

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

I'll buy the ticket is somebody's buying my drinks!! (I'm getting the cheap end of the deal.)

JulieDiCaro said:

I'll buy drinks. The combination of you and the noodle is unstoppable.

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

If you only knew how close to the truth that is...

Dmband said:

user-pic

Teebob I can only assume you did not attend any games between 1190-1997....Im quite certain no one saw them win 1 game during that stretch.

Thats one heck of a streak though.

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

Ha-ha! In the interest of full disclosure, your assumption isn't far off. Actually I didn't attend many games in those years, and probably went all of '95/'96 without going to a single game due to my general all-around disgust with the players strike of '94. All was forgiven though by the time of the '98 chemically-enhanced homerun race of Sammy and HUGE Mac.

Teebob2000 said:

And while the tix for tomorrow are now at around $50, I looked yesterday a.m. before heading down to the game and there were bleachers for $5 with a $4.50 'print at home' ticket option.

About to thrown down with Rock over the Erin Andrews thing on the podcast. Back to back podcasts today--Julie & Alex and then Wrigley Talk Friday.

summerguy said:

user-pic

Lefties are hitting .420 against Kazmir... so we are starting only one. Makes sense.

Umbra said:

user-pic

Oh, don't be silly. Kazmir is left-handed. You want to start righties against him. Don't privilege 12 games and 300 PA's over 300 games and 4000 PA's. Over his career, the OPS splits are .647/.751 lefties vs righties.

Teebob2000 said:

I'm assuming you're familiar with the Cubs history of success over the last 102 years?

abe frohman said:

I know interleague play is neat and all, but can anyone remember the last time the Cubs played a team, you know, from the NATIONAL LEAGUE?
This is bogus.

flyball said:

user-pic

I'm beginning to seriously dislike interleague games

Hey Bud, Reduce it to 6 games 1 series against the "natural rivals" or whatever you call them (that might be the ACC term) and 1 against someone else.

Thats it, nobody cares about the rest

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

C'mon, how are the Diamondbacks and the Red Sox NOT "natural rivals"??

flyball said:

user-pic

on the upside Manny making a return to Fenway is giving everyone in Boston something to talk about other than last nights game

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

THERE ya go! Should be fun watching him get booed mercilessly there.

flyball said:

user-pic

eh, Boston fans have mellowed with all the winning in the last few years, everyone is all hearts and flowers

its weird, but with all that bitterness floating out there its only a matter of time before the Cubs fans completely embrace it

cadarnell said:

Dmband said:

Ive been driven to the brink of insanity during this road construction. I mean, its gotten completely out of control. If you're shutting down and entire MAJOR expressway you better be at least adding a lane or something.

Ps. there is a crazy storm on the way. If you check the radar, it appears to be the end of days.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

yikes.

big storms out here to the west!

MillsChC said:

Afternoon from too warm So Cal....
Sorry to the anti-interleaguers-but I love the thought of the Cubs vs Angels-Dodgers vs Yanks, anybody vs the Sox (either color!). It breeds great rivalries and makes American League pitchers learn to hit! Of course I'm rooting for the Cubs-I live with two Cubs fans who are bad losers! But watching the Angels in Wrigley-so cool!

MillsChC said:

user-pic

Wow... So Len & Bob are gonna go along with this bit.

flyball said:

user-pic

what bit, some of us can only listen

MillsChC said:

user-pic

The guys from the old SNL Da Bears skit are up in the booth in character doing play by play.. kinda lame, but I did like the "longer than a Patrick Kane hangover" & the "for some reason I wanna go buy a Toyota now" lines.

How bad did the Cubs lose?

cadarnell said:

user-pic

it was a really horrible one run loss .... three big errors!!!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

came back from 7-2 in the bottom of the 9th to make it 7-6. Silva did well and deserved a win.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

On a positive note, Colvin looked good in the leadoff spot and DLee looks like he's finally swinging the bat well.

Doc said:

user-pic

Every single time we say that D-Lee looks like he's starting to swing the bat well, he strikes out like 12 times in the next game.

MillsChC said:

user-pic

He does that even when we don't say he's starting to swing the bat well.

Dmband said:

user-pic

So what was all the Silva/Lou drama about?

Much ado about nothing?

Edelweiss said:

Did the Theriot doll you got have the Cubs logo on his hat? The one I got did not, and I noticed several people sitting near me that also had the "Cubless" version. Also, has any other MLB player had a bobblehead of himself in anything but his team uniform? I am beginning to wonder if Theriot is really committed to the Cubs after all they put up with from him.
