Chicago Cubs Thursday Headlines: This Time, Lou Really Means Business

PHILADELPHIA - JUNE 09: Niklas Hjalmarsson of the Chicago Blackhawks hoists the Stanley Cup after the Blackhawks defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime to win the Stanley Cup in Game Six of the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Final at the Wachovia Center on June 9, 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Congrats to the Chicago Fire on their MLS championship

Yesterday, Lou Piniella had meetings with all the hitters. His message? Those who hit will play (I think we've heard that before). How did the lowly Cub offense respond?

The Cubs went with a right-handed hitting lineup against lefty Randy Wolf, and they tagged him for 5 homers: 2 each by Marlon Byrd and Geovany Soto and 1 by Derrek Lee.

"All we're trying to do is create a little sense of urgency here," Piniella said after the game as all TVs in the clubhouse were tuned to the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup celebration. "OK? We've got keep grinding. That was the purpose (of the meetings). But these guys swung the bats tonight."

Frankly, I'm more interested in seeing who's in the lineup today, and how they hit today. Pat Hughes said on the radio that it's been two weeks since the Cubs have won back-to-back games. Blech.

The Cubs finally decided to put Aramis Ramirez on the DL, recalling Chad Tracy to take his roster spot. Aramis doesn't mind the paid time off, though.

"This is the right thing to do," Ramirez said. "If I can't swing the bat and contribute to this team, there's no sense for me to be playing.

"Right now I'm not helping the team. I'll try to get 100 percent and get back to what I'm used to being."
Why hasn't this happened before now?

"We talked about it before but I didn't want to do it because I felt I was good enough to play," he said.

Would be a good mental break as well?

"It's not about a mental break," Ramirez said. "The only way to get out of a slump is playing. If you don't play, you can't get out of it. I tried to play through it and it didn't work."

Chad Tracy is just happy to be out of Des Moines.

"I swung the bat well down there," he said. "I played every day and did what I had to do. You continually have to reprove yourself in this game. I went down there and took some good at-bats, had some success and hopefully opened some eyes."
Remember when Ted Lilly struggled to start his season? Well, he's not been struggling lately, but he's not getting any wins to show for it.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Ted Lilly (1-5) is the second pitcher in Cubs' history pitch six straight quality starts without a win. The first was right-hander Sheriff Blake in 1926. Blake finished 11-12 that year.

In the last 12 hours, I've seen at least 10 people on TV saying "Chicago hasn't won a championship since Michael Jordan was here!"

I bet the White Sox appreciate that. Ha.

Between the parade tomorrow (kick off at 10:30 at Michigan and Wacker) and the Cubs/Sox game AND the World Cup starting, there is serious danger of the city exploding tomorrow.

I'm wearing my Hawks tee under my suit to court this morning. :)

I'm guessing there are good odds that some other officers of the court will be wearing a Hawks logo today as well.

Sounds hot. I don't think people would say anything if you wore it over your suit.

Woo got my Hawks shirt on! It's Blackhawks day at work! Feels good to have a team I like win it all. Freakin' Cubs. Maybe they'll be inspired by the Hawks and go on a Rockies-like run, make the playoffs and win it all! Who's with me?! No one? anyone?

I'm with you, Plamorte!! All we need is a tirade by Lou or inter-team fight.

And a winnable division . . . how are the Cubs just 6.5 back of first and just 5.5 back of the Cardinals? Oh, that's right. Suck is contagious.

I'm 3/4 Canadian and still can't bring myself to care about hockey. Nobody watches hockey. Sorry Chicago, this doesn't count as a championship for me.

Huh? Aren't you always proud??

Oh, wait -- OK, never mind.

gravedigger said:

For me, pride has nothing to do with pride. It has to do with even more drinking than usual, and a lot of fun stuff in the city. I'm not really concerned with the teme.
