Sunday Headlines and Live Game Thread: Can the Cubs Take 3 of 4?

Chicago Cubs fans celebrate in the bleachers after their team beat the Milwaukee Brewers during their opening day MLB baseball game in Chicago

Here's the situation: Carlos Silva allows 5 runs in 5 innings. Carlos Marmol allows a hit and two walks in the ninth. Here's the expected result: Cubs lose. Not so! In fact, everyone's hero, Alfonso Soriano, came through once again, and Derrek Lee showed up in crunch time. The result? A come-from-behind win.

The heroes were Alfonso Soriano, again, with a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh inning; Derrek Lee for a bases-loaded, two-run single in the eighth; and reliever Sean Marshall, who pitched two scoreless innings for the victory and hasn't allowed a run in 11 of his 14 appearances.

A healthy knee and Rudy Jaramillo finally have Soriano swinging the bat like we'd been expecting.

''The most important thing now is I don't have to think about my knee. Last year I was thinking about my knee, and it took away from my [concentration on my] swing. I feel very good physically now. I work very hard every day on my stretching because I want to be 100 percent.''

Having his former Texas Rangers hitting coach, Rudy Jaramillo, on the Cubs has made a difference, too.

''I work hard with Rudy,'' said Soriano, whose average is .303. ''We work in the cage, and he tells me [to] swing at my pitches. I see the ball better because I'm patient.''

As aforementioned, Carlos Marmol made things interesting when he came on in the ninth, including stepping in a random hole on the mound and apparently twisting his ankle. He did manage to strike out the side and says he's fine.

After the game, Marmol pronounced his ankle ''fine'' -- a not-too-minor matter given how well he has taken to the closer role and how important he will be to the Cubs' hopes this season.

His ERA is a minuscule 0.71 in 12 appearances, and he has 25 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings.

Marmol capped an impressive day for the bullpen after starter Carlos Silva kept things close, giving up five runs in five innings. Jeff Gray pitched a scoreless inning before Sean Marshall (1-1) worked two more perfect innings for the victory.

Sunday's game features starters Edwin Jackson (1-2, 6.67) and Tom Gorzelanny (0-3, 2.45). Game time is 1:20 CT, available on WGN TV and radio.  Look for lineups in the comments field.

Carl is either up way too early or is going to sleep way too late.

Hopefully Gorzelanny can get his first victory of the year today. He's pitched in a lot of tough luck so far.

Sometimes it's one, sometimes the other. This time, it was up early, having to work at 7 am on a Sunday.

I dearly hope Soriano's moving the Knee-O-Meter up to "Good" is genuine... his play has improved enough to make me think it is and a fit, healthy Soriano could be just what this team needs if there's any chance of contending this year. Coming in to the season I was thinking if Soriano and Soto can both turn things around then our line up begins to look quite tasty.

That was, of course, before Aramis started to tank but, from what I can gather, via Pat and Ron the last couple of days, it might just be he's on the verge of coming out of it. Sure it was windy but didn't he reach the warning track twice yesterday and also pick up a cough, cough single?

There are far fewer pieces to fit together for this to be a relatively decent team than there were three weeks ago. Three out of four against the Diamonbacks would make me feel a whole lot better too.

Question: When the Cubs play a team with a pigpen even oinkier than theirs do we get to fly the pigpen flag under the W?

We have a pigpen flag?!?!

kiwibob said:

user-pic

You mean you haven't seen it yet?!?!?!
It's not like it hasn't been up enough times already...

kiwibob said:

user-pic

Don't worry S... it will be flying again shortly no doubt...

JulieDiCaro said:

I think we save it for occasions when the pigpen blows the game. It's a loooong season and we don't want to wear it out.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

I guess I don't pay attention. Maybe I should look at the standings flags more.

Twitter is discussing appropriately douche-y "walk-up" songs for Ryan Braun. I've voted for Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up." Thoughts?

pointing out that soriano played his last 3 months as a Cub worse than a one-armed Aaron Miles does not make people enemies.

I was listening to the game on my way home, and the D'Backs brought in reliever Mulvey. I couldn't help but think of the Seinfeld episode wherein Jerry forgets the name of the woman he's dating, but knows that it rhymes with a female body part. One of the guesses? Mulva.

Wonderfully strong game by Gorzelanny today. He showed why his ceiling still projects up to a strong 3 in a rotation. He's like a baby Lilly: he will give up the gopher ball and be quite hittable on occasions, but he really has a mix of nice stuff and good K potential.

1) Glasgow
2) Krakow
3) Garbage Scow

Extra credit is available for arranging his transport to destinations 1 or 2 via transport vehicle 3...

Breaking news from the Cubs clubhouse.....A certain utility player, and two of the pitchers must have eaten at Taco Bell, because they had gas, and were flicking their Bic at the jet. The utility player got butt burns, and one of the pitchers got a burn on a finger. This happened on Wednesday, and, hopefully the utility player, who now has a hairless ass, will have recovered by Tuesday, because he will be starting against the left hander.
