Chicago Cubs Sunday Headlines/Game Thread/Cubs @ Rangers, 1:05 Central

MLB: Cubs vs Mets APR 22

The Cubs won a one-run game last night, but the more interesting story is Lou's beard. In case you haven't yet seen it, the best I could do is find a not great picture of it (it's the second in that slide show). On to the beard news:

The beard is back. And apparently it's not going away any time soon.

''I haven't had the energy to shave,'' Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. ''And I feel comfortable this way.''

Lou's feeling listless and Randy Wells was looking to score some laughs.

''It's kind of sweet,'' starting pitcher Randy Wells said of Piniella's thicker version of the fairly common stubble look. ''I might put a little Just For Men in his locker tomorrow.''

As for non-beard related news, Starlin Castro continues to impress, no matter where in the lineup he's asked to hit.

When he delivered a third-inning homer -- his first since his first big-league at-bat -- and the Cubs went on to beat the Texas Rangers on Saturday night, it made the Cubs 5-0 when Castro bats second. He's hitting .381 (8-for-20) with three runs scored from the two-hole.

''He's been consistent,'' Piniella said of the shortstop, who is hitting .357 overall. ''The last two games [Thursday and Friday] I've watched in the ninth inning when he's made a couple outs and he's not happy with himself. That's a nice sign. This kid competes. I'm impressed with him.''

The bullpen's been short-handed this weekend with Big Z's simulated game tomorrow.

Manager Lou Piniella was asked if he would use Zambrano in the three-game series at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington if he needed him to win a game and, after a long pause, said he would not.

"When I give the player my word on something, I follow through with it,'' Piniella said. "I think that means I'm going to rest him until Monday. I told him he would pitch in (Philadelphia), and I told him we could use him in this series. He has done his part; I'm going to do mine.''

Tom Gorzelanny's line drive riddled body won't  be going on the DL to make room for Zambrano in the rotation.

Piniella reported that Tom Gorzelanny got in a good workout Saturday after taking a line drive off his pitching hand Wednesday at Philadelphia. The off day on Monday gives Piniella the option to skip Gorzelanny this time through the rotation.

"He was throwing in Chicago, and he felt fine,'' Piniella said of Gorzelanny, who is 2-4 with a 3.09 ERA in eight starts. "We're going to get Z back in the rotation ... and (after the Monday simulated game) we'll have some decisions to make.''

Today, we'll give the last word to Crazy Uncle Phil, who got a pretty obvious whisper from his dog.

The Cubs' decision to bring Bob Howry directly to the big leagues after his release from the Diamondbacks was seen as a sign of desperation by rival scouts.

Today's game starts at 2:05 Eastern/1:05 Central. Carlos Silva (5-0, 3.35) faces C.J. Wilson (3-1, 2.55). You can watch the game on WGN or listen on WGN radio.

Two things this morning:

ESPN Deportes is reporting that Josa Lima has died of a massive heart attack; and Corey Patterson is currently on the "hot" list over at Yahoo Fantasy Baseball.

I'm not sure which of the two items is more shocking...

I literally stopped dialing a phone number when I saw the fox sports headline. He was a great guy, and the LA Dodgers treated him shamefully. Baseball needs more characters like him...

Am I the only one who thinks 37 seems awfully generous for Jose?

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

it's because of the exchange rate.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

HA.

I mean, I thought he was about 37 when he was pitching for Houston.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

he was 37 for like 15 years.

Silva looks even rounder in HD.

Re:Lima-he died in the LA area, and had recently been recruited to work with the Dodgers organization with the alumni-he was also going to sing at an "Viva Los Dodgers" promotion coming up. He had played in Korea in 2008, and the Golden State league 2009-10.So at least he had made up with the Dodgers at the end...

Grabow up in the pen. How can they lose?

JulieDiCaro said:

I'm watching the Hawks. Are we winning?

Bobcubs08 said:

nady just scored to make it 5-3. slid in between the catcher's legs. Nady faceplanted in his crotch. awkward!

MillsChC said:

user-pic

No... Hawks are down 1-0.

cadarnell said:

we're up 5-3 in the 6th .... big 2 out RBI single by hill just now ...

Rich Beckman said:

user-pic

Cubs up 5-3, top of the 6. Cubs have first and third with two out.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Silva only lasted 5?

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

5.2 innings. he's now 50 pounds lighter due to water weight loss. he almost looks svelt.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

5 1/3 and lou took him out for grabow to face hamilton who crushed a line drive single off him ... then two pop ups

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

i wonder if grablow has pictures of lou and an unidentifed naked chick he's holding as blackmail. can't figure out why else he'd keep getting in the game.

cadarnell said:

Wow--Castro has a cannon.

Put Bobby in!

Bobcubs08 said:

MillsChC said:

user-pic

If I didn't know any better... I'd swear you're now actively rooting for blown leads.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

wow. that's a great return for howry. i seem to recall we got rid of him cuz he sucked.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Grabow is the one who loaded up the bases!

MillsChC said:

user-pic

If it wasn't for Fonzie hustling in LF (that in itself was a miracle), the game would be tied right now courtesy of Bobby.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Not if Grabow hadn't put half the Rangers on base!

MillsChC said:

user-pic

Grabow putting guys on is a given that we just have to learn to live with... it's like those dumbass World Baseball Classic rules in extra innings where the innings starts with guys on 1st & 2nd.

Rich Beckman said:

user-pic

Still 5-3. Texas has first and second, one out. But never fear, Howry is here.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

i have a bad feeling about this ... Im such a pessimist though

cadarnell said:

user-pic

man I hope Marshall gets it done ... this would be such a nice win here

Bobcubs08 said:

the Big Smooth is unstoppable!

Rich Beckman said:

5-4, bases loaded, two outs, Marshall coming in.

MN Pat said:

user-pic

Crap. Lead down to one, the bases loaded, and now the Blackhawks are down by 2.

Rich Beckman said:

user-pic

Marshall gets out of it. 5-4 heading into the 8th.

Bobcubs08 said:

TYLERMANIA! is getting his first AB of the game.

Rich Beckman said:

5-4, top of the ninth. One out.

MillsChC said:

Does Carl know that those pictures were not of Piniella, but were mostly Little Mikey, who has a stranger beard than Piniella. He probably has some Just For Men thast he could lend Piniella. He looks better when he does not color his beard because everything looks dark on that chalky white skin. Without the beard, which may be protecting him against sunburn, he looks like about 12. He probably can't use spray-on bronzer because sweat would wash it off.
