Chicago Cubs Sunday Headlines and Live Game Thread: Pirates @ Cubs, 1:20 PM Central

Tribune Photo by William DeShazer

Saturday, the Cubs managed to lose their seventh straight game to the Pirates, dating back to last year. On the radio, Pat said that the Pirates have scored a run in the first inning in each of the five games this year. I think Lou Piniella said all there is to say.

''Boy, that big hit is really elusive,'' said Piniella, who's running out of answers.

''What are we gonna do? We've tried a little bit of everything.''

While fans of the Cubs are descending into madness, it appears as though the team has already found a happy place there.

Said Byrd: ''We're not worried. The solution is easy. You have to stay positive. There's no negativity, and it starts from the top. Lou still believes in us, Jim Hendry still believes in us, so we're not worried.

''We have to start stringing some wins some way, somehow.''

On a positive note, John Grabow has managed to reduce his ERA below one run an inning.

With Zambrano unavailable Saturday after his 35-pitch stinker the day before, Grabow was called on Saturday to keep the game within one run.

He did as he got three outs on a hit, double play and flyout after he struck out three straight batters the day before, which has done wonders for an earned-run average that has dropped to 7.90 from 9.26.

Grabow took a week off before Friday's appearance to rest his left knee after needing a cortisone shot to ease pain. It appears to have worked.

"I don't think it is directly the reason I wasn't pitching well," he said, "but it's something I wanted to get (corrected) before it got worse."

Starlin Castro has been consistent at the plate and improving with the glove.

Starlin Castro had a clean day with seven chances at shortstop, including a smooth display of footwork on a 6-3 double play in the seventh inning. Castro (1-for-3) singled and scored a run and has reached base safely in all eight of his games.

As for today's game, Ross Ohlendorf (0-1, 3.00) goes for the Pirates against Ted Lilly (1-3, 4.88). Game time is 1:20 Central, available on WGN TV and radio.

Let's go Cubs!

yeah but can you introduce me to a sexy giraffe?

It's your misfortune that a Cub who has "something to offer", only shares it with women,(actually, he can't share it with women anymore because he is getting married) and a Cub who might enjoy your company has nothing to offer. Oh well, you never know what we may get in a trade. Hang in there.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I really want to know who this person is that you keep alluding to...

Edelweiss said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Since he has nothing to offer except butt scars, who cares? "Might" enjoy your company means he doesn't know if he is AC or DC. Last year he tried the DC lifestyle, but he was seen in Richmond with a girl in January.

Hello from sunny and beautiful Phoenix! I'm just glad that I get WGN to watch the Cubs lose today...

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I'm not sure what I'm more offended by: the spammers who come here and try to blend in or the people from other spots blogs/forums who try to lure LOHO readers away.

millertime said:

user-pic

Yeah, or like those people who call in to C-span and are "independent" but then totally make comments that are 100% in line with Democrats or Republicans? I mean, pick a side already, am I right?

cadarnell said:

user-pic

I'm most offended by people who aren't Cub fans ... they annoy me

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I say the latter is worse. The spammers can lead to some run comment threads.

Lineup:

rf fuke
ss castro
1b lee
3b rami
cf byrd
lf sori
2b font
c soto
p lilly

if Nady had been in there again, I seriously would have lost it.

millertime said:

user-pic

I like this lineup. They might not be good, but I think it's a fairly Fan Friendly lineup. I'm at least entertained by this lineup.

As bad as it's been so far, at least it isn't the team from 2006.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

God knows, if we can't win, let's at least be fan-friendly.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

true, true ... mr. millertime

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Dear god, thanks for bringing up that memory. 2006 was really a nightmare. When I think about it, my mental image is overtaken by a giant picture of Dusty Baker's toothpick chewing mug.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

we need to win one so I can stop drowning my sorrows and being hung over all the time .... go cubbies!!!

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I'm really confident that we can lose one more to the Pirates. Lets do it!

millertime said:

user-pic

That is exactly the kind of attitude we need more around here! Yahoo for positive thinking! Yahoo for school!

how are the Cubs not in last place?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

It's a miracle. . .

Perkins said:

user-pic

Because the Astros have found a depth below rock bottom.

millertime said:

user-pic

Former Cubs Sergio Mitre is starting for the Yankees right now. How does this happen?

millertime said:

user-pic

*Cub*

Umbra said:

user-pic

Well, the Cubs traded him (and Ricky Nolasco...and Renyel Pinto) away for Juan Pierre.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

that really *is* hilarious

baturkey said:

user-pic

They've also had LaTroy Hawkins and Kyle Farnsworth before.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

I forgot Len and Bob were broadcasting from the bleachers today. It should be interesting...

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I love watching people freak out and protect their face when a ball is fouled straight back. i know i'd do the same thing and its just a reflex, but watching people suddenly realize they were never in danger cracks me up

Umbra said:

user-pic

Imagine how I felt after Obama won.

Umbra said:

user-pic

I remember liking watching Ohlendorf pitch. Didn't he almost no-hit the Cubs once?

MN Pat said:

user-pic

Ryan Doumit's photo on Gameday makes him look like the spawn of the devil.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

WAY too nice to be indoors today. I might have to take Pat and Ron outside and sit in the yard.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

I'm starting to realize why people in Arizona stay inside during the day in the summer. I took a walk at 9am and it was already about 90 degrees out.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I was out for 20 minutes and my freckles exploded all over my face. I'll be outside, but under the patio umbrella.

flyball said:

user-pic

and its only May

don't worry though, its hot, but its a dry heat ;)

MN Pat said:

user-pic

They're intentionally walking Ronny Cedeno?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Did Fonzie just fall down?

Oh wow.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

he's such a joke out there ... then he stands at the plate in the bottom of that inning ...he is asking for the boo's

MN Pat said:

user-pic

So today the Pirates waited till the second inning to score. Can we count that at some sort of victory?

Umbra said:

user-pic

And that's why you never intentionally walk Ronny Cedeno.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

The Cubs were hoping they could catch him stealing on a walk.

Umbra said:

user-pic

That still upsets you.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

it doesn't upset me, i just can't believe it happened. or that i saw it.

Perkins said:

user-pic

In retrospect, that was one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen in baseball. At the time, I wanted to reach through the screen and punch him in the throat.

Then there was the time in 2006 when Chris Capuano picked him off twice in an at-bat. That was special.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

it was completely hilarious. just imagine how much MORE hilarious it would be with him on the other team?

Perkins said:

user-pic

I remember staring at the screen for a minute, wondering if that was actually legal and possible. Getting thrown out on a walk...my brain hurts just thinking about it.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

i cant believe sori was standing at the plate after he hit the ball there .... especially after the way he's played LF so far today .... BOO HIM !!!!! ... we shudda got more than one there .....%%$%#%$#%$#@#%%^&&&**^

Umbra said:

user-pic

Yes, let's boo the best player on the team.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

you're right ...booing hasn't realy seemed to help him anyway .... he really should have gotten outta the box sooner there though .... the errors in the field are one thing, but the lolly gagging at the plate just really gets under my skin...

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

oh come now.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Sorry Cubs, you've been relegated to "commercial viewing" during the Hawks game. It's not me, it's you.

Umbra said:

user-pic

Is it going to be on NBC?

Umbra said:

user-pic

IT IS! JOE PAVELSKI IS ON TV! I saw him on the street once!

Umbra said:

gravedigger said:

This is going verrrrry well.

Umbra said:

user-pic

If Dany Heatley and Joe Pavelski could each get hat tricks, that would be cool. I'll take the Hawks winning 8-7.

dragonmaster63 said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I still think Ramirez needs to be sent down or moved to the 8th spot.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

ok ... that was a hell of a catch by fukudome .....maybe that will ignite the offence ....GO CUBS !!!

cadarnell said:

user-pic

lets get some freakin RUNS!!!!!!

secdelahc said:

user-pic

On the bright side, Lilly just got out of a really big jam with no runs!

cadarnell said:

dragonmaster63 said:

alright new game.

Umbra said:

user-pic

Yes, Lee! Tie game. Now Zambrano can come in to cough up the lead!

secdelahc said:

user-pic

First we have to let Marshall get three outs, then Marmol can blow it.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

nope its marshall ...he's looked good lately though ...no coughing up i hope

cadarnell said:

user-pic

ok ...mabe not right now for ramey ... oh well nice to see d lee get it done ... go CUBS !!!

Umbra said:

Smart baserunning by Soriano! Anti-TOOTBLAN.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

he can hustle ... and you're right ...he probably the best we got right now ...

cadarnell said:

user-pic

should it be Z pintch hitting instead of Nady ?

cadarnell said:

user-pic

NOPE ....Way to go X

Umbra said:

user-pic

Xavier Nady wants vengeance.

(And gets it!)

secdelahc said:

user-pic

Nice walk by Soto. Now let's watch Nady choke. Has he done anything yet?

cadarnell said:

user-pic

this is gooooooood ..... nady gets it done and starts a big winning streak !!!!

Umbra said:

user-pic

Baby steps.

cadarnell said:

user-pic

that reminds me of "what about bob" ... what a gr8 movie ....one down in the 9th

cadarnell said:

user-pic

would love to see fukudome do something against a lefty ....

LostinFla said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Well, it's a good thing Nady wasn't in the starting lineup after all, since he wouldn't have been available to get a pinch-hit single in the 8th!

cadarnell said:

user-pic

I was thinkin he was a bad choice to PH ...I am gladly wrong ...yessss

cadarnell said:

user-pic

that camera angle made me think fukudome had a hit there ....RATS!!! .....c'mon marmol 1-2-3 all strike outs !!

cadarnell said:

user-pic

1 more marmol ....c'mon !!!

MN Pat said:

And now I can put my full attention back to the Hawks!

cadarnell said:

user-pic

I mean to say slider ... I have no idea what im talking about sometimes ...who am i kiddin ... most of the time .... I should also say one of the best ive seen ever ... i got a little carried away with a victory over the mighty pirates .... i hope your hawks win !

Edelweiss said:
