Chicago Cubs News: Casey Blake Is a Crybaby and Country Joe Gets His

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs

Some mornings, Chicago Cubs news is absolutely brutal to report. Other days, it's a pure joy.

Today is the later, because of stories like this:

Umpire Joe West has been drawing plenty of attention to himself for a long time and Major League Baseball is apparently planning to suspend or fine West in the near future, according to Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan.

His transgression? West has reportedly been trying to get reporters to talk to him about something Major League Baseball wants everybody to forget about: when he called the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox "pathetic and embarrassing" because of their long game times. West also wants to talk to reporters about ejecting Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and pitcher Mark Buerhle.

That's right kids. At long, long, long lasts, Country Joe West may finally, FINALLY have to face the music. Granted, the music may be a Kenny G instrumental, but it's music nonetheless. And I ask you, people of LOHO, what kind of umpire has a freakin' publicist? If an umpire does his job right, people shouldn't notice him; apparently, this is a problem for Joe West. He wants to be noticed, dammit! He's every bit as important and awesome as those high-falutin' ballplayes and managers that think they're so great. He deserves press, too!

In other Cubs news today, Casey Blake is a whiny crybaby who thinks Ted Lilly should get in trouble for cheating! I don't feel like getting into this again this morning (if you do, see the diary below on this topic), but I would like to add, as many of you correctly pointed out on Twitter yesterday, that Casey Blake had no problem with sliding 10 feet outside the basepath in a questionable attempt to break up a double play. See, it's only cheating when the OTHER team does it. Duh.

In Cubs triage news, Z had a tummy ache, Baker still can't see, and Aramis got a bandaid for his boo-boo:

Zambrano experienced abdominal pain in his lower right side before the game and was checked for appendicitis.

Manager Lou Piniella said he was "having appendicitis-type symptoms," but the Cubs later said an appendicitis was ruled out.

Zambrano basically had a stomach ache and is expected to be available Friday against St. Louis. He's scheduled to return to the starting rotation during a road series in Pittsburgh that begins Monday.

Baker was suffering from lost vision in his right eye and was removed in the eighth inning after not moving for Russell Martin's single directly to his left.

"He had no vision at all out of his right eye," Piniella said. "We had to get him out of there."

Team opthamologist Jon Rosin treaded Baker and there was no immediate word on his status. The Cubs also announced Aramis Ramirez received a cortisone shot for his swollen left hand. Ramirez sat again Thursday but may play Friday.

Oh joy. Look, have we considered the fact that a one-eyed Baker may currently be better than a slumpy Aramis? Maybe we can get him an eye patch? Like a pirate? He could look very forbidding over there, thus discouraging opposing players from hard slides into 3B? Huh? HUH? Think about it, Lou.

In marginally exciting news, Andrew Cashner was moved into the bullpen at AAA Iowa yesterday, calling many to speculate that we may see him in the Cubs bullpen in the very, very near future.

Let's see . .  there are several podcasts up today for your auditory pleasure, including Julie & Alex's Excellent Sports Adventure (noon CT) and Wrigley Talk Friday (1:00 pm CT). Adam and I will be Tim-less today, so PLEASE PLEASE call in and help us fill the void that will inevitably ensue after Adam and I get done fighting over the LOST finale.

Cubs v. Cards today at 1:20 pm CT. Be there.

And, because it's Friday, here are my angry, angry, I-thought-my-weekend-was-starting-but-now-I-have-to-go-to-court-on-an-emergency iPod 5:

  •  Killing in the Name: RATM
  •  Pill: Pink
  • Kick: INXS
  • My Head is Hanging Upside Down: The Ramones
  • Screw You: Pat McCurdy

I'm not going to fault an MLB Ump for finding success off the field, but Joe West has always been a horses' ass on the field. He struts around like he's God's gift to umpiring and abuses his "authority" towards the players and managers (which I've always assumed was out of jealousy).

And speaking of jealousy, Casey Blake is a sore loser. End of story.

I really believe the phrase "horses ass" to describe someone is a great one and very underused.

It's not just his ego (which is just as big as his flabby turkey-neck) but he's got an economic stake in being recognized as well, what with his country music CD AND umpire equipment business. (Wonder how sales will do for him there in the next few weeks? After all, he's such a great example.)

I hope we sweep the Cardinals... that would make my weekend.

Also, like Lilly said, how are you suppose to get anything on your pitches if you are pitching in front of the rubber and not pushing off it?

Blake also accused Lilly of going north to drop off and south to pick up. Moron.

I'm putting together a photo montage for a high school graduation, so here are 5 songs that may or may not appear in that aw-shucks festival:

Joshua Radin, "Winter"
R.E.M., "I Believe"
Better than Ezra, "This Time of Year"
Glee Cast, "Lean on Me"
Doves, "There Goes the Fear"

Re: Baker -- I'm with you. We suit him up like in the Capital One baseball-themed ads featuring the Visigoth/barbarians playing the regular team, with a big-ass two-ball morning star and he scares the shit out of them.

"Jeff the Barbarian?" Maybe we can come up with something a bit more threatening. But you get the idea.

Jeff the Destroyer

Meh. I think the problem is the "Jeff" part, not choosing the best adjective part.

I feel like this should be top priority this afternoon...

I love Uninvited!! And I agree Casey is a girl's name, and Blake is acting like a girl re Lily. And since a.) they have Cheating Manny on his team and b.) They actually have hits against Cubs pitchers, Blake should shut his yap and look for some dye for his pervy beard...

Anyone have any fun and exciting plans for the weekend? Besides watching the Cubs put the smack down on the Cardinals, that is!

jarowcliffe said:

I plan on doing that from the LF bleachers on Sunday!

gravedigger said:

Yes, news reports confirm Zambrano had gas. Or food poisoning. Something like that.
