Chicago Cubs Monday Headlines and Game Thread: Happy Memorial Day/Cubs @ Pirates, 12:35 Central

U.S. Flags Are Placed At Graves At Arlington National Cemetery

I think it's worthwhile every Memorial Day to take a few moments to appreciate that so many have sacrificed their lives to build this great nation in which we live. I'd rather more people focus on that than on boating and grilling, but we all have our own thing.

I'm not going to mention yesterday's game, so we'll just jump to the exciting news. Our newest minor league prospect savior is on his way. Andrew Cashner will join the team in Pittsburgh.

Asked if the Cubs planned to make a roster move to balance out the bullpen with Carlos Zambrano returning to the rotation, Lou Piniella said Andrew Cashner, the organization's top draft pick in 2008, would join the team before the Pittsburgh series.

However, general manager Jim Hendry later sent word through the Cubs' media relations department that Cashner would likely join the Cubs at some point during the Pittsburgh series, not necessarily today.

The right-handed rookie would bring balance to the bullpen as far as matchups. With the left-handed Gorzelanny joining the bullpen in place of the right-handed Zambrano, the Cubs would be carrying four lefty relievers and only two right-handers, not including closer Carlos Marmol. A corresponding move to clear a roster spot will follow.

As you may have heard, this Cashner kid seems like the real deal.

Cashner has enjoyed success in the minors this season. He began the year at Class AA Tennessee, where he went 3-1 with a 2.75 ERA in 6 starts. In 5 appearances with Class AAA Iowa in May, the 23-year-old went 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA in 21 innings with 17 strikeouts and 2 walks. Cashner's last 2 appearances at Iowa were in relief. Piniella did not specify Cashner's immediate bullpen role.

Luckily for us, Dave Van Dyck reminds us that it was Zambrano's failure in the pen that brought all this about. It has nothing to do with the fact that he's more valuable as a starter. Poor Gorzelanny is the victim here.

After Zambrano failed in his eighth-inning test, the Cubs will call up 2008's first-round draft choice, Andrew Cashner, to fill that spot and make Tom Gorzelanny unhappy with a move from the rotation to the bullpen.

Plus, they will have to make a roster move before Cashner joins the team Tuesday or Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

"I thought I was good enough (at starting) to continue but this is what they do," Gorzelanny said. "I just have to go with it. This is a team sport and whatever I can do to help the team is what I'll do."

Randy Wells enabled all this tomfoolery with his no-out-inducing start on Friday.

Randy Wells will fill Gorzelanny's starting role Monday in Pittsburgh, just three days after a 16-pitch start against the Cardinals in which he got no outs.

"It's nice to get right back in there," Wells said.

As aforementioned, you'll be able to see Randy Wells (3-3, 4.79) take on Ross Ohlendorf (0-3, 5.11) at 12:35 Central today. The game is on WGN and WGN radio.

oh ... thx to wgn for showing the white sox yesterday and not the cubs ... that was a big help for my holiday weekend mood .

JulieDiCaro said:

it's a memorial day miracle! Grabow has been sent to the DL with an 'injury.'

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

"pitcheslikeshit-itis" is an actual injury? whatever! i'm not complaining.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

It is for the Cubs. See Lieber, John and Gaudin, Chad the past couple of years.

Maim said:

user-pic

Maybe the scathing look I gave him yesterday through the TV somehow magically inflicted the intended pain.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I was hoping it would be an ass injury from that line drive the other night.

Does anyone honestly believe he has a sprained knee? A blister on the hand can be a huge problem for a pitcher. Remember last year? Baker's butt may have healed, but he doesn't use it to pitch, and is allowed to have bandages on it. Fartgate lives on.

For some reason, 10:35 seems awfully early for baseball...

Boooooo for thunderstorms on Memorial Day, but thank goodness for day baseball!

Wow--not only is Theriot not in the lineup today, it sounds like he's been benched for being a general dumbass:

"It’s been an awful month statistically for Theriot and a pretty good one for Fontenot. Lou was asked if this lineup move was more than a one-day thing.

“We’ll see how well Fontenot does, but I’m not going to say one way or another,” Lou said. “This could be more than a one-day thing, yes. He (Fontenot) has been swinging the bat, putting the ball in play. He’s done better. With Theriot, we’re talking about 1 walk the whole month. That’s kind of hard to do. We talked to him about it. He’s had 1 extra-base hit the whole month. But we’ll see.”"

This could be a win-win for him and Fontenot. At the time of the Castro call-up, both Fontenot and Theriot had empty averages over .300. Since being benched, Fontenot filled out his average, and started to find his power. The same could happen to Theriot. It will probably be more of a platoon. Once Theriot has improved, the same could be done for Rami. Believe me, this is not really about Theriot's hitting; it is his attitude. He has always been a slap hitter, with mostly singles. As long as he played shortstop, the most important defensive position, it was OK, but they found someone who can play better shortstop, and second basemen are expected to help produce runs.

baturkey said:

user-pic

I think that should have been an error since it hit his glove, but I'm not complaining.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

E6!!!!!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

wow--Ronny may be one of the best defensive infielders on this team. i've never seen a player crawl around on all-fours after a ball like that.

Maim said:

user-pic

I came to work, but didn't feel like working, so I'm drinking and internetting instead. They don't have the game on, though.

Actually, nothing's on. The weather broke the satellite.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I'm supposed to be working today, too. Maybe later.

:P

secdelahc said:

user-pic

I should probably get some work done today, too, but I don't feel like it right now. Perhaps after the game.

MN Pat said:

user-pic

Either you're a bartender or have the best job I've not yet heard of.

Maim said:

user-pic

It may be the second one.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Okay, this is really making me angry: the same people on Twitter who have been all upset about "bandwagon" Hawks fans (most of whom live in Chicago and are excited to support their hockey team) are all excited about Kevin Smith wanting to go to a game.

Complete and total civic fail.

MN Pat said:

user-pic

One more reason to avoid Twitter.

Maim said:

I had a weird dream about Niklas Hjalmarsson last night. It wasn't dirty or anything (I said Hjalmarsson, not Burish). But it was weird. He was some guy I went to pre-school with who I for some reason still remember. Even though he probably wasn't even born when I was in pre-school.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I had a weird dream that I worked at the office on "Parks & Rec." My first assignment? Getting an office cat.

Maim said:

user-pic

That right there is awesome.

baturkey said:

user-pic

I'm sad that Parks and Rec got bumped for Outsourced next fall, which looks like a one joke show.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

assuming he'll be allowed to make the flight from wherever he is?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

haaaaaaaa.

MN Pat said:

user-pic

Apparently it's girls' day here on the live game thread.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

there's nothing wrong with that. :)

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

hot as he is, i wish garrett jones wouldn't do that.

Maim said:

user-pic

Haha. It had just occurred to me that there had previously been no mention of Garrett Jones when I just saw him up to bat.

(The satellite now works on single digit channels. SCORE!)

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

"It had just occurred to me that there had previously been no mention of Garrett Jones when I just saw him up to bat."

i'm trying to quit.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

guess it's a "use everyone in the bullpen" kinda day. sucks for Randy. He did fine work in his split-shift start.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

hmm. kitty on my foot and I wanna touch it. yes, completely unrelated due to the pitching change.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I'm gonna put up a Blackhawks game thread for tonight in a bit.

Maim said:

user-pic

Awesome! ...I won't be on the internet for it, but awesome none the less.

I just saw some guy on facebook whining about bandwagon fans. I don't know him, so um, learning from previous experiences, I didn't reply.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

if i were to watch or express any opinion whatsoever, I would be jumping on that bandwagon myself, so I'll remain silent.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I really feel like 90% of the "bandwagon" fans should get a pass. This team has been on TV for 20 years. How are they supposed to keep a fan base?

Anyway, most of the people who consider themselves "real" fans have only been watching for 2 years, anyway.

Maim said:

user-pic

Oh, boo. I've been watching/listening since they came back to TV, and I still feel like a total poser.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I haven't followed the Hawks religiously since the early 90s. I switched to college hockey and then jumped on the bandwagon lasst season when they came back to tv.

I don't care what anyone says. My city-my team.

Anyway, I have to deal with all the post-2003 Cubs fans, so they can deal with me.

Maim said:

user-pic

If anyone calls me out, I just remind them that I'm a native Texan, and there ain't no ice there on which to play hockey.

Then they say, "What about the Dallas Stars?" at which point I scoff at their lack of knowledge of both Texas-related geography and how poor attendance stats were/are for the Dallas Stars.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

And once again the pigpen decides to negate a good outing by the starting pitcher. Although the offense should have been able to score more than one run. These are the Pirates, for cryin' out loud!

Maim said:

user-pic

Bob Howry is an Adonis.

sniffle.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

his ERA is almost as big as, well, nevermind. I don't have the proper information to complete that statement.

Maim said:

user-pic

I believe that was a quote from one Mr. Mark DeRosa.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Come on, Bobby!

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

am i the only one who's NOT pleased to have Howry back on the team?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

no--it's only the girls that are happy to have him back, and it has nothing to do with his skill set.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

oh I get it now. *facepalm*

Maim said:

user-pic

It's true. Some of these teams are full of hotties, but the Cubs, not so much. We take what we can get.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

I feel I have to interject that it's not ALL the girls. He should have just stayed DFAed. Or gone to pitch for the Brewers or something.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Let me ask you this: if you have to watch someone blow a save, would you rather it be Howry or Grabow?

secdelahc said:

user-pic

That's a tough question. I'd have to say Howry, but only because I'd be hoping someone would charge the mound, not because he's hot.

Edelweiss said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Are all things in proportion?

MN Pat said:

user-pic

The Cubs realize that they have to score to win games ... right?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

it's really anyone's guess.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

I would love to ask Lou that in the post-game press conference.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

I'm not so sure anymore.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

the also seem to forget to not let the opponents score as well.

MN Pat said:

user-pic

The Pirates. How is it we suck so badly against the Pirates?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Here comes Cashner!

secdelahc said:

user-pic

He's definitely NOT hot. And he's trying to rock the Woody goatee and failing miserably.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

is he a ginger kid?

secdelahc said:

user-pic

He's a blondie. And gingers can be very attractive.

Edelweiss said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Oh No!!!!! A giant Fontenot.

MN Pat said:

user-pic

Brilliant! And very efficient.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

Oh, look--Cashner's in.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

thank you E6.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Things learned so far today: Cashner > Cedeno

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

yay!

secdelahc said:

user-pic

A dirty bunch of jockstraps > Cedeno.

Maim said:

user-pic

The TV is over my shoulder and about 5 feet up. Every time I turn around to look at it there's a car commercial on.

Maybe today that's a good thing.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I still can't believe Theriot took one walk in a month.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

he wasn't even sportin' the homer swing from last year either.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Grrr. I feel like Fonzie ALWAYS strikes out in those situations. Boo.

Apropos of nothing, I have so much salsa on my shirt, it's not even funny.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

i'm almost out of rum.

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

TYLERMANIA!

Bobcubs08 said:

user-pic

secdelahc said:

user-pic

You know your team is bad when your last hope of a pinch hitter is Ryan Theriot. Ugh.

Maim said:

user-pic

The guys next to me (one works at one of the rooftops) are shit-talking Theriot. Hee hee.

MN Pat said:

user-pic

Phooey.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Have I mentioned lately how much I HATE Theriot?

Edelweiss said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

After this year, either he or Fontenot will probably be gone. They will both stay this year until Castro gets established. Since you have a love-hate relationship with Fontenot, which one do you want gone?

JulieDiCaro said:

Come one back to LOHO at 7:00 pm CT to cheer on the team that actually has a chance of winning a game.
