Chicago Cubs Headlines for Tuesday: Two Wins Down, Thirteen to Go

MLB: Brewers vs Cubs APR 25
Our Hero

Aramis Ramirez hit a game-winning home run in the 11th inning last night. But there's something even more interesting afoot with the Cubs. When one says "interesting" and "Cubs", you might imagine that it involves Carlos Zambrano, and it does.

"We're going to change Zambrano's role some," said Piniella, whose team improved to 17-22. "We're going to start stretching him out some for a bit. He's going to gain some stamina and some arm strength, and we'll leave it at that. He wasn't in the bullpen tonight for short duty. But he will be in the bullpen tomorrow. But we are changing his role from short to longer.

"I didn't say rotation. I said we're going to change his role in the bullpen."

When pressed, Piniella acknowledged a return to a starter's role sometime down the line this year is possible.

"Look, we thought that the outcome would be little different," Piniella said of the setup role. "He's not as comfortable with it in the bullpen pitching short so we're going to use him in a different way and get him some stamina, build up his arm, and that's what we're going to do. The next step, probably down the road (in the rotation), if need be, yes."

Stretching Zambrano out will leave the Cubs with two lefties in the setup roles. I'm not so worried about that prospect as I am that one of the lefties is John Grabow.

One of the upshots is that the Cubs will have both of their main setup men being lefties: Grabow and Marshall. Of the two, Marshall has been the far better, pitching 20.1 innings and giving up 11 hits and 5 walks while striking out 27.

"I think it all kind of revolves around my curveball," Marshall said. "I've been able to throw my curveball from different angles and for strikes. It's been good, and it makes my fastball a little bit better."

Grabow helped Randy Wells close out the seventh tonight, but he loaded the bases in the eighth, and Marmol walked in the tying run. Grabow has worked 14.1 innings, giving up 21 hits and 8 walks. The short option among righties appears to be Esmailin Caridad.

You'd figure Ramirez to be ecstatic after hitting the game winner and driving in three runs altogether. But he's not satisfied yet.

Ramirez's two-run home run off Matt Belisle in the 11th was the difference, making a winner out of Marshall (3-1). Ramirez had three RBIs, though he still isn't satisfied.

"I'm still hitting .170," he said with a grin. "I've got to keep doing that. I've got to go out there and get hits and drive in runs and just help this team."
Finally, in news that's sure to please our very own Cubbiejulie, A surprise superstar from the world of jurisprudence is making an appearance at Wrigley tonight!

On Tuesday, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor will deliver the game ball to the umpires at Wrigley Field. She's promoting "Our Courts," a web-based education project designed to teach students civics and inspire them to be active participants in democracy.

Will he go into Cooperstown a Cub? Only time will tell...

I feel like he was the only thing we had to remind us of our time with Joey Gathright.

I believe Farney is still looking to sign on somewhere, though.

JulieDiCaro said:

I completely blocked Ryan Freel's time as a Cub out of my memory. All I see when I think of him is a young guy loping across the grass at the Great American Ballpark in Reds gear.

Good times.

you know, I am all set today to have a major blowup at something, and the Cubs denied me an easy target with that win yesterday

Do we have a plan for tonight yet? I was thinking meet at Murphy's between 5-6:00, then head down to SOS at 6:05 when they open?

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

I'll be wearing a pink rose in my lapel...

JulieDiCaro said:

I will be wearing a navy blue Cubs t-shirt, but it's probably just easier to look for my hair. It looks like

That home run was a thing of beauty. I heard it on the radio, and it sounded like Santo was reborn. Then I heard the TV call later, and Len sounded like he was giving the Bill Pullman speech from Independence Day. Good times.

I have to come up with a 30-second radio spot for LOHO. Thoughts? I was thinking something to do with addiction and mental health and group support.

Also, is it chilly downtown? It's nice and warm out here in the burbs, and I don't want to underdress for the big rooftop jam!

a) nothing better than 80s to early 90s Michael Keaton films. I just watched the end of "My Life." Sappy, yes. Going to win an Oscar? No. But it makes me laugh (and then cry) every time.

b) if that's what you're going for, you should really be coming to the game tonight.

Hows this?
Sad,depressed, morose? Feel like something is missing in your life?
These feelings are common among people suffering from Cubs Addiction.
Here at LOHO,we tenderly wean the Cubs Addicted fan using wit, sarcasm, & abuse.

LOHO- saving Cubs Fans, one snark at a time...

Wrigley Rule 101-

Always bring one more jacket than your THINK you need.

Its downright cold in the city...

flyball said:

user-pic

excellent rule

Doc said:

user-pic

For the most part, that rule only applies in April, most of May and September.

But it is always easier to take clothes off than it is to go to the gift shop and buy a blanket.

flyball said:

user-pic

also depends on where you sit, a day game in the bleachers is very different than the 200 level on the 3rd base line with wind

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

Especially if you're a dude. At the game on Sunday there were two guys attending with two ladies (appeared to be their spouses so the guys were *probably* straight) and the two guys sat next to each other with a cute Cubbies blanket covering their legs. I felt it merited Jim Nantz voicing over with "change out of that skirt, Jason" from the FLO TV ad.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

But rooftops have outdoor heaters and indoors with big windows, and besides, I'd MUCH rather be cold than hot.

flyball said:

user-pic

I imagine they also have a place to put your jacket though

JulieDiCaro said:

slight correction: my train gets in at 5:00, so I won't be a Murphy's until closer to 5:30. Unless someone wants to pick me up . . . (hint hint)

Doc said:

user-pic

I could pick you up, oh...wait...damn! :(

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

seriously, you're ruining my whole night.

Doc said:

user-pic

Yeah...but I'll make it up to you some how...not sure how...but I will. Have fun, Buttercup.

Ok...forget it, Buttercup just doesn't work. Never mind. We'll call you all the names we were calling you before.

flyball said:

user-pic

woo hoo, it must be someone's birthday upstairs, i saw a cake box just go past my desk

afternoon sugar rush!

Doc said:

user-pic

If you can't tell, I'm really depressed that I'll miss the game tonight. But, I will be working a really good track meet this evening...so it won't be a complete loss. Have fun everyone!

plamorte said:

user-pic

I'm depressed too, if I didn't decide to buy a house, I'd have $$ for such functions, stupid adulthood.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

you could sell your house and sleep in the streets. its free.

Doc said:

user-pic

The trick these days is to sell your house for more than you owe on the mortgage...that is my problem right now.

plamorte said:

user-pic

I'll have to ask @FakeRonnieWoo if he has room in his box...

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I wish to hang with the LOHO people, but glad I'm not going to a place to stare at that dump of a structure called Wrigley Field.

Doc said:

user-pic

Hey...you can't call it a dump now that the bathrooms have whiter walls.

flyball said:

Dmband said:

user-pic

Will Hanley Ramirez be traded, if so where?

Doc said:

user-pic

I bet he'd make a great addition out our clubhouse chemistry. Maybe trade Byrd and Colvin to the Marlins for him?

Teebob2000 said:

user-pic

He caught a mild case of Bradley Derangement Paranoia Syndrome. Hope he gets over it, he's on one of my fantasy teams! (Been trying to trade him for 2 weeks and nobody will take him. Oy.)

Doc said:

user-pic

Well, I'm off to my track meet. Have fun. Free tickets to a future game to the person who gets Julie to pass out by the 5th inning.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

and then gets to me to the right train on time.

ChicagoNow gets big ups from Mashable.

plamorte said:

user-pic

Mashable has obviously never used the site! But really, CN would be nowhere without the LOHO traffic I tell ya!

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Oh, great, they made a mobile site. A mobile site that only lets you see the main chicago now site. PLEASE, as I've been asking for since day 1, can you just use that to make mobile sites for all of the CN sites? Please, CN? This is NOT difficult to do.
