Sweep!

I Want To See My Face

After losing three of four in uninspiring fashion to the Mets, the Cubs started trying to regain our love by sweeping the Brewers with a 12-2 victory Sunday.

"We really turned our road trip around, that's the most important thing," manager Lou Piniella said. "We struggled some in New York and came here to Milwaukee and put a lot of runs on the board, and we got really good pitching."

Randy Wells did the pitching Sunday, working 7 innings and improving to 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA.

Just about everybody did the hitting. The Cubs pounded out a season-best 18 hits. In addition to Theriot's 5, both Kosuke Fukudome and Tyler Colvin came within a triple of hitting for the cycle. Geovany Soto and Derrek Lee added home runs.

Another good start by Randy Wells put the spotlight on the Cubs' starting rotation, which has been nothing less than stellar to start the year.

Randy Wells' seven strong innings without a walk was overshadowed by the Cubs' huge offensive day. But he continued a trend among the starting pitchers that underscored some of the reasoning behind Carlos Zambrano's surprising move to the bullpen.

Cubs starters have a 2.96 ERA -- 2.03 subtracting Zambrano's four starts from the totals.

Wells' start followed Ted Lilly's six scoreless innings in his return from the disabled list (shoulder). Ryan Dempster opened the series with 7 2/3 strong innings.

Speaking of Cubs' starters, don't expect to see Big Z in back-to-back games just yet:

Manager Lou Piniella said he won't use Zambrano in back-to-back games until he's had three or four appearances to get more acclimated to his new role.

Lou's wacky outfield rotation seems to be working wonders at this point in the season.

And look at the outfield, which three weeks into the season already looks vastly improved offensively over a group that made up one of the worst-hitting outfields in the majors last year.

Like Colvin, right fielder Kosuke Fukudome missed a cycle by a triple, and Alfonso Soriano drove in a run in the first and singled in the eighth.

''This rotation in the outfield I think has been helping because it keeps everybody fresh,'' manager Lou Piniella said of rotating backups Colvin and Xavier Nady into the starting lineup every few games. ''I think these guys have responded pretty well.''

Byrd, who sat Sunday despite some protest, is 16-for-his-last-30 with four three-hit games in his last seven starts. He leads the team in hitting and RBI.

In fact, three of the four outfielders are hitting .300 or better, and the five have combined for 12 of the team's 23 homers and 42 of the team's 87 RBI.

About the outfield hitting, it's still April. Fukudome always hits in April. Go back a week and I'm sure the outfield's stats weren't so shiny as Byrd and Soriano have both been on hot streaks in the past week. Will these guys continue to perform at their current levels? More than likely no. They could end up being better than last year's outfield and hopefully they will, but it's too early to predict that based on the limited number of games played so far.

Slow starters make sense. Sometimes it takes people a lil bit to get up to speed.

Fast starters is a strange concept to me. I don't think it's a trend that will hold up. I think his first year you can attribute to MLB figuring him out. Last year, I don't know.

Stat gurus, can you think of other notoriously fast starters to shoot down my argument.

I just can't believe we won a game without Marlon Byrd.

plamorte said:

user-pic

I was surprised too until I found out that was Byrd in a Theriot costume on Sunday. Well done Marlon, well done.

Oh, okay. That makes much more sense.

So Julie, when do we get to but Tylermania shirts (and how much do I profit from it?)

plamorte said:

God, ARod is such a punk. He ran across the rubber on the way back to the dugout last night.
Ass.

He did it again? I thought that happened several days ago against the A's

JulieDiCaro said:

Maybe. I just heard about it this morning.

Then couldnt believe the pitcher was mad and said something about the pitcher should keep his mouth shut cause he only has a handful of wins and is a nobody (paraphrasing of course)

plamorte said:

i may have missed this but what's the big Cubs/White Sox announcement?

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Something about a trophy, I think? I can't bother to look it up. I don't want to spoil the endorphin rush by thinking about playing the White Sox.

plamorte said:

user-pic

oh great, like a trophy that passes between the teams based on who wins the season interleague series?

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Yeah. I think both teams saw how this season was going and figured someone in town should have a shot at winning some hardware.

i would like a mini-statue of barrett slugging aj and aj's jowels flapping in the breeze. that way, it celebrates both sides of town!

FrankS said:

Don't worry. He's bound to have another couple of bad slumps before the season ends.

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

LOL. At least you're keeping it real on my "way of life" comment.

In reality, rage should likely go toward Samardzija. ALWAYS Samardzija.

secdelahc said:

user-pic

Although it's hard to rage at Samardzija when we don't see him every day on the big league club since he got sent down.

jarowcliffe said:

Part of my morning routine is to picture Spellcheck kicking a puppy and that helps on the days he doesnt pretend to play baseball

thisyearcub said:

I will continue the rage no matter where he is, even if he goes back to playing football.

RELEASE THE KRAKEN ON SAMARDZIJA

JulieDiCaro said:

So far it's working great for me.

(Just giving CN a hard time.)
