A League of Her Own

Friday Cubs Headlines: Sweet Victory

We're number 1! We're number 1!

Well actually, we're number 4. But still, it's better than where we were!

If you missed the game last night (and the "Chat in a Hat"), you missed Tylermania! singlehandedly sending the Braves off the field in tears and our very own "phenom" (ahem"), Carlos Marmol, striking out the infamous Jason Heyward and making him look baaaaaad.

Oh, and there wasn't too much oinking from the pigpen, either!

After losing their first two games, the Cubs held on for a 2-0 victory Thursday night over the Braves behind the solid pitching of Randy Wells and home runs from Tyler Colvin and Marlon Byrd.

"It's huge," Byrd said. "It's hard starting off slow. I want to get some hits out of the way before we get to Chicago, before I get booed."

Booed? How can you say that, Marlon? And here I've been blipping this for you every time you HR:

Hrmph.

After John Grabow's bullpen failure Wednesday, Carlos Marmol pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to post his first save. As usual, it was a nail-biter.

After stranding a pair of inherited base-runners to end the eighth, Marmol gave up a sharp hit to Yunel Escobar to start the ninth. Kosuke Fukudome cut off the ball in the gap, holding Escobar to a single. Piniella called it the "biggest play" of the night.

Marmol then struck out rookie phenom Jason Heyward before Nate McLouth walked. Eric Hinske flied out to deep center and Marmol struck out Melky Cabrera, pumping his fist in the air to punctuate the moment.

So, after our stunning victory last night, we head to Cinnnncinnnnatti to take on Captain Toothpick and his legion of Arms on Borrowed Time.

Alas, it's not all sunshine and rainbows today. Our fearless leader has had a not-a-setback:

ATLANTA -- Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly was scheduled to pitch Friday for Triple-A Iowa, but his session was pushed back to Sunday because of stiffness in his back.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella said the problem isn't serious. Lilly is rehabbing from arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, which he had in November. He was to make two more Minor League starts before given the go-ahead to join the Cubs' rotation in mid April.

"This is not a setback," Piniella said of Lilly's back soreness.

You also said you WEREN'T a dragon, Lou. You're not exactly a reliable source. But you do provide some valuable information on the upcoming rotation:

ATLANTA -- The Cubs will bring Carlos Zambrano back Saturday for his second start of the season, one day ahead of his natural slot in the rotation -- a move that assures Zambrano a start in next week's home series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Manager Lou Piniella said he wants to keep his top three starters -- Zambrano, Ryan Dempster and Randy Wells -- on every-fifth-day schedules despite days off in each of the first two weeks of the season. All three are lined up for Milwaukee.

I'm headed out to Minneapolis this morning, and I'm hoping to wrangle my way into a tour of Target Field over the weekend. Tonight's game against the Reds is a 6:10 pm CT on WGN (Carlos Silva v. Homer Bailey). If someone could take over game thread duties for me, I'd be much obliged.

Otherwise, we'll just use this as a game thread.

And finally, because it's Friday:

5 songs on my iPod:

Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing: Chris Isaak

Bad Things: Jace Everett

Criminal: Fiona Apple

Shipping Up To Boston: Dropkick Murphys

Weapon of Choice: Fatboy Slim

Don't forget Julie & Alex's Excellent Adventure comes on today at noon CT! Today, John Carruthers of Wasting Away in Wrigleyville joins us to discuss what the hell is going on with the Cubs. You can listen here.

Sunday at 5:30 pm CT is Throwing Like A Girl, the Major League Baseball Podcast by girls for girls!

Both podcasts are now available on iTunes.

I'm going to have "Weapon of Choice" in my head all day: you can go with this, or you can go with that, you can go with this, or you can go with that. . . "

Very happy to to pick up the W...

Marmol reminded us all why at times he's the most unhittable pitcher in baseball.

Honestly what do we do to get Colvin more Ab's...Obviously Sori isnt going anywhere and I still hold out hope that he will be good again...

RF?

It would have to be in a trade. I doubt Soriano, Byrd or Fukudome would be benched. Byrd just got signed, so it's doubtful he would go anywhere. Soriano and Kos have giant contracts, which is a problem. So for now Colvin will be pinch-hitting and playing in the scheduled off days for the other OFs.

Let's see him keep doing well into June before any moves are made though. As Winston Wolf once said, "Let's not start *************************************** yet."

(Censored since it's still morning)

Going back to that "What did we learn" theme from the other day here's what I got from that game...
1. I like Randy Wells.
2. I really like having Fukudome back in right field. Lou was right. He made the play of the game but the second play of the game was also his.
3. Marmol will probably hit more and walk more batters than he will allow hits. This makes life more exciting but also results in more nailbiting all round...
4. LOHO readers have a wide variety of hat selections.
5. LOHO's Rally Baby... possibly the cutest kid on Earth. Good work Doc.

"I had to get some hits before I get to Chicago, or I'd get some boos," said Byrd.

It's sad that he thinks that ... but I'm not surprised. I'm hoping for smarter fans this year.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Pretty sure it was a joke.

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

Possibly, but I'm sure he saw what happened last year. Just to bring it up at all, I mean, the man's got 2 HRs already I would hope that he's fine.

Will be interesting/telling to see if Samardzija gets booed.

I heard the comment on the radio, and in context he was essentially saying, "Hey, I'm not going to be immensely pleased with myself because I hit two homeruns, I'm just trying to collect a couple of hits before the home opener so I'm not 0-27 when I make my debut at Wrigley."

TYC-

Agreed. I really like Fukudome's defense in the OF too..

It never hurts from a competition standpoint to have someone nipping at the heels of Sori and Fukudome...

this is weird but not really since this is CN, but I cannot post comments anywhere but at LOHO. I'm logged in but every comment box in other blogs makes me put in my name and email then when I hit post, it refreshes the page and nothing happens. Nice CN, nice.

MillsChC said:

When Colvin hit that HR, it made me laugh cause Tylermania! was the first thing I thought of. Don't know if he got the ball back, the crowd threw it back, but then the Braves ballboy retrieved it & gave it to someone in the stands over next to where he sits, even though the 1st base umpire was yelling something at him.

JulieDiCaro said:
