Cubs Tuesday Headlines: It's a Streak!

(Phil Velasquez, Chicago Tribune / April 26, 2010)

The 2010 Chicago Cubs continue to try to make us believe in them. On a cold night at Wrigley, they weren't hitting, so they just took a bunch of walks, instead.

The Cubs were as patient as they were smart on this blustery, 48-degree night. Their hitters drew 8 walks, including 2 in the 10th inning.

"Patience," said manager Lou Piniella, whose team reached .500 at 10-10. "Patience there in the bottom of the 10th. Theriot starts it off with a basehit, and we don't get the runner over, but Derrek (Lee) and Ramirez showed a lot of patience up there, and we got a walk-off walk win."

Each of the three Carloses had a hand in last night's victory:

Starting pitcher Carlos Silva turned in his fourth quality start in as many outings. He didn't get a decision, but he worked 7 strong innings.

Carlos Zambrano made his 2010 Wrigley Field relief debut and worked 12/3 scoreless innings. And yet another Carlos, Carlos Marmol, worked the 10th to get his first victory of the year.

The feat of los tres Carlos turns out to be a rare one for the Cubs:

Carlos Silva, Carlos Zambrano and Carlos Marmol all pitched in Monday's game. It's the first time the Cubs used three pitchers with the same first name in a game since June 5, 1966, when Bill Hands, Bill Connors and Bill Hoeft all appeared in an 8-3 loss to the Reds in Cincinnati. Thanks to historian Ed Hartig for that.

One more bit about a Carlos - Big Z finally spoke more about his move to the bullpen.

"I'm not 'happy' happy about this decision, but I feel good," he said. "I feel good to help my team and to do everything to help us solve whatever the problem is."

The "problem" was the Cubs' late-inning bullpen situation. The Cubs brass, including GM Jim Hendry and manager Lou Piniella are putting no timetable on Big Z's time in the pen, but Z reiterated that he believes the move is temporary.

"Yeah," he said. "That was what Lou said. That is what we agreed. They are looking for a setup man. This is what they told me. I don't think I will be too long in this role. I will be there to when they need me."

Zambrano did inject a note of humor into the proceedings when asked if this was easier to handle for the new, "more mature" Carlos.

"What do you think?" he said. "You guys have the answer. A different Carlos wouldn't be smiling right now. He would be (ticked) off or disagreeing with the manager. I feel good. I'm happy with the way things are right now."

Today's final word goes to Lou Piniella, who once again proves how much fun it can be to have his as the manager.

Workers finished the installation of a heating duct for the far end of the home dugout before the game. Nothing for the other side of the dugout, closest to home plate, where Piniella usually works.

Game-time temperature was 49 degrees.

''You'll see me managing from that [far] end,'' he said.

The following bit comes from the "Around Town" column by Dave Kaplan and Fred Mitchell. Based on the way it is written, I'm laying this at the feet of Kap.

"Word on the street: We hear Carlos Zambrano is none too pleased with his move to the bullpen, and the Cubs are hopeful if they keep winning, it will keep Zambrano's complaints to a minimum. Sources say he was initially shocked and has become increasingly upset. The team is trying to keep it from becoming a bigger issue. Could a blockbuster trade be in the works?"

So everything we hear in public is that Z is being a good soldier, but the hacks are already starting character assassination on the guy. This seems so familiar to how a lot of players were run out of Cubbie blue uniforms.

And the reason that Carl missed this is that the story, such as it is, was buried inside an article on how Ken Griffey Jr. used to be a neighbor of Tiger Woods.

It was buried as it should be. I'm sure Kaplan wouldn't be too happy if he got demoted from a nightly radio show and was converted into a glorified temporary post-game host. . . . Oh, wait. Sorry, Kap.

You think he'd be just a bit more sympathetic, yeah?

I watched Kraplan last night with Stevey Stone and it was Stone who brought up all the problems that Zambrano was going to create and suggested a trade might have to be in the works. I wish someone would call Kraplan out on these so called sources.

Ugh. . . I dont even want to talk about what passes for "journalism" in this town.

Well, come on, Steve Stone knows better. This isn't the type of team where a guy gets fired from his job just because of a little interpersonal unpleasantness. . . . Oh, wait. Sorry, Stoney.

Man, why is it that the two media guys in Chicago who can probably best empathize with what Carlos is going through would be the biggest jerks about the whole thing? I mean, besides the fact that they're jerks.

I don't understand what benefit there is to anyone in trying to make it about an angry Zambrano, I get needing to do the journalist thing, and report a story, but in this case it seems a little more manufactured or else it wouldn't be buried, tweeted jada jada.

it feels like Z is the guy they are trying to get to crack this year, maybe this was the real reason Milton was around, a distraction

I've given up on meditation, there is however a boxing gym a block away, I think I may need to learn how to hit a punching bag

I was amazed to find that I didn't stress over the fact that the Cubs took 10 innings to win the game -- I just had a feeling that they would win.

I'm watching the goldman sachs hearings. when did "capitalism" become synonymous with "stealing?"

oh wait . . . always.

Have you seen Capitalism-A Love Story?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

No, because I have serious issues with Michael Moore's "journalism." FYI, my ethics teacher in J-school fired him from Mother Jones for the same kind of things that gets him in trouble with his movies.

And it hurts me to say this because I LOVED "Roger & Me."

jarowcliffe said:

Im not a Michael Moore fan either...interesting stories from the people he interviewed though

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

the problem is with his editing. i was devastated when i found out "Roger & Me" was strategically-edited to make Roger Smith look much, much worse. I really loved that movie.

Pretty pathetic, actually. I don't think they expected Congress to be as prepared as they've been.

Has anyone read the post on BleachNation about the Silva for Sherrill trade idea? Funny, but something that Hendry would consider. Hope not
