Saturday Cubs Headlines: Stuck With Silva

Remember way back in the off-season, when we used to joke about Carlos Silva making the starting rotation, because we never, ever, EVER thought he would in a million billion years?

Uuuhhhh . . .

MESA, Ariz. -- Lou Piniella finalized his pitching staff Friday, naming Tom Gorzelanny and Carlos Silva as his fourth and fifth starters, respectively, and giving the last bullpen spot to rookie left-hander James Russell.

The move means that
Jeff Samardzija and Sean Marshall will join a bullpen that includes three rookies: Russell, Esmailin Caridad and Justin Berg. Throw in Carlos Marmol, and six of the seven relievers are aged 27 or younger.

I don't want to talk about this until Silva tanks and is out of the rotation. Too painful.

In other fun pitching news, it looks like the bad Marmol showed up for the game yesterday:

MESA, Ariz. - Carlos Marmol's rough outing in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics had manager Lou Piniella scurrying for the video machine.

Marmol came on in the ninth inning of a 2-2 game and lasted just one-third of an inning, giving up 3 hits and 3 runs. He also hit a batter, his third of the spring and the third in his last three games.

Last year Marmol hit five batters in the spring and 12 in the regular season.

"He was really flat with his pitches today, and we were wondering why," Piniella said. "I think we found something on the tape. We'll let Larry (pitching coach Rothschild) work on it tomorrow.

"His mechanics are off. What he's basically doing is showing the ball to the hitter quicker, and also he's losing that nice depth on his breaking ball."

Hooray. So real baseball is right around the corner, and things are shaping up just as we thought they would.

At least Z looked good:

Zambrano strong: Carlos Zambrano was impressive, working into the seventh. Officially, he went 6 innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs, 1 earned. He threw 83 pitches, 54 for strikes. He'll start the season opener.

"I'm anxious to start the season, and I'm ready to go," he said.

Aaaaand, for those of you wondering about Lilly's outing yesterday . . .

Ted Lilly threw 31 pitches over two innings in a Minor League game at Fitch Park on Friday. Lilly, coming back from arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder, gave up a couple runs in the first and retired the side in the second. He threw fastballs and changeups, no curves. Next step will be another Minor League start at the Cubs' camp. Lilly is expected to be ready to join the rotation sometime after April 15.

Carlos Silva will start today's game against the Padres at 3:05. Once again, the game will be on WGN tv AND WGN radio. It's a Springtime Miracle!

Don't worry so much about Silva. Since he's slated as the fifth starter he should be the one bounced from the rotation when Lilly returns in April. We're talking one or two starts, tops

Will he have a designated thrower?

The negativity... it burns.

yeah well . . . I feel like I owe you all honesty.

Yep, I understand. I'm really pulling for the guy. I hope he can find success here.

speaking of a designated thrower, some White Sox front office guy was on the Score talking about how much improved the White Sox outfield will be with Juan Pierrre out there.
bwahahahahahaha.

Hilarious...he's better out there than Scotty Pods...but not by much, and he couldn't throw me out....just silly...

Cubs trade Andres Blanco to TEX for PTBNL.

Talk about a late scratch...

I can't think of one, but I propose a nickname for Marlon Byrd based on that golf-ball sized welt he just received on the side of his face.

Colvin with a HR. Nice.

Starting LF. How the hell can Lou put Soriano back in there??

I know, there are 18 million reasons...

millertime said:

Also, Soriano is a better baseball player than Tyler Colvin. That's probably why he'll put Soriano back in there.

Teebob2000 said:

Erm... I guess it depends on how you define 'better.'

millertime said:

Yes, it certainly does depend on how you define "better". If "better" is defined as lower paid, with lower expectations, then you are correct, Colvin is WAY better than Soriano. Although I don't really know why someone's salary should play a part in determining how good they are at baseball.

However, if "better" is defined as skill at baseball as measured by statistical means, I think Soriano has the advantage, at least based on historical trends.

wow, Colvin is a one-man wrecking crew.

He's got a chance for a spring-training cycle in the bottom of this inning.

I love Tyler Colvin.

That is all.

Do you realize how long it has been since you have featured someone on Designated Hotter? Maybe Colvin would fill the bill.

Karen said:

Yes, he belongs on Designated Hotter. My 16 year-old came back from ST talking about #21 and how hot he was.

JulieDiCaro said:

Unfortunately, DH is DEAD.

I don't know why it's still showing up.

I love anyone wearing a Cub uniform doing well. Tyler Colvin is doing well.
