A League of Her Own

Monday Cubs Headlines: Tylermania!

tyler2.jpg

Hey guys, guess what I did? (Photo Tibune/Velazquez)

We're on Day Three of All-Tyler, All-The-Time! Heck, we might just change the name of this site to "A League of Tyler's Own." Or even better, "A Tyler of Her Own." Ha!

In case you're having trouble catching my drift, I'm trying to tell you that Tyler Colvin made the Opening Day Roster.

PEORIA, Ariz.-- Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Sunday morning he hadn't told rookie outfielder Tyler Colvin he'd made the team, though it was the worst-kept secret in camp.

"I think the young man should be able to figure it out," he said.

Colvin began Sunday leading the Cactus League with a .475 average and was at .468 after a 1-for-3 afternoon against the Mariners. He said he won't believe he made it until he's on the plane to Atlanta.

"Oh, really?" Piniella said. "I'll help him today get on the plane. He's had a heck of a spring.

"You reward performance in the spring. If not, there's no sense in keeping statistics or records or anything. It'd be 'Just get in shape and play.' ...

If we can't take Colvin after the spring he's had, something is wrong."

One bench spot remains open, with Kevin Millar, Chad Tracy, Sam Fuld and Micah Hoffpauir battling it out. A decision should come by Tuesday.

So there you have it, kids. God ol' fashioned American stick-to-ititveness can get you anywhere you want to go. Oh, and is also helps if you can hit a fastball 400 feet.

Speaking of hitting fastballs, the Mariners had a hard time doing just that yesterday:

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Ryan Dempster is looking forward to a better April and better season, and he set the right tone on Sunday.

The Cubs right-hander struck out nine over seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners in front of a Cactus League-record crowd of 13,629.

"I've been waiting for the season to start and that was as good as I've thrown the ball all spring by far," Dempster said. "I was really happy today."

He cruised through the first six innings, striking out six and giving up two hits, but got into a jam in the seventh. The Mariners loaded the bases as Casey Kotchman singled, Ken Griffey Jr. walked and Eric Byrnes singled. Dempster then struck out the side to escape the mess.

Ryan Dempster: making a slow ascent up the fantasy charts. I think he was the first Cubs pitcher to go in our Media Jerks draft last night.

In case you missed the drama yesterday, Bruce Miles gave Milton the what for before the game yesterday. Don't believe me? Look:

PEORIA, Ariz. _ We arrived at Mariners camp in good time to see about talking to former Cub Milton Bradley. You know, just to get caught up. Turns out the Mariners were in a meeting with umpires. And no, Milton did not get kicked out of the meeting. So afterward, we headed into the clubhouse to pay our respects.

"No chance," Milton said by way of greeting. "Beat it. You guys ran me out of town. Never again."

I figured I'd better say "hey" back.

"We didn't run you out of town," I retorted.

Milton finished getting dressed on the run. He pulled his jersey over his head, flashed two fingers (not one) and said, "Peace."

So that's about that. The Mariners' media relations staff was gracious enough, but they said they didn't want to make a 'deal' out of this. So we headed to the back field and watched Milton take some BP along with Junior _ and hey, there goes Corey Patterson _ and the M's.

That'll teach him to mess with Bruce!

My dreams of once again being able to shout "J'accuse, Gaudin! J'accuse!" from the bleachers were dashed late yesterday:

PHOENIX -- Right-hander Chad Gaudin has agreed to terms with the Oakland Athletics to help shore up their injury-riddled pitching staff, three days after being released by the New York Yankees.

Gaudin was released by New York on Thursday after losing out to Phil Hughes for the No. 5 slot in the team's rotation. He is expected to take one of the spots in A's bullpen.

Alas, the news was not so rosey for all former bad Cubs:

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Jacque Jones has been told that he will not make the Minnesota Twins' opening day roster.

Jones hit .344 this spring with two home runs and three doubles. But manager Ron Gardenhire told him on Saturday that there wasn't enough room for the veteran outfielder on a loaded Twins roster.

I've been getting a lot of questions about tickets for the June 19 LOHO Get-Together. People, the rules for this couldn't be more simple: just buy a bleacher ticket for that day. Instructions on where and when to meet will follow. The beauty of the bleachers is that we don't have to get our tickets at the same time, yet we can all sit together.

Let me reiterate: I DO NOT HAVE A STASH OF TICKETS FOR THIS GAME. Please stop emailing me and asking. Next season, if you would like to purchase 50 bleacher tickets in advance on your credit card, please feel free to do so. Until then, you'll have to resort to StubHub, Ebay, or any one of dozens of other ticket agencies. If you need help finding a ticket, let me know.

Today's game against the Reds kicks off, as usual, at 3:05 pm CT. No video today, and we're stuck with the away feed via WLW.

7 days, 6 hours, 47 minutes until baseball.

Flyball, I just put a team in this league as one of my regular fantasy leagues went belly-up this year, so I will have some extra time this summer.

LostinFla said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Oops. If this made one team too many, just let me know and I'll delete it. Sorry. Didn't check first.

LostinFla said:

Sorry, team deleted.

flyball said:

as long as it lets you add go for it

LostinFla said:

It left you with an uneven number of teams and said your league wouldn't draft. I was just trying to help out, but if you still need an extra team, let me know.

Fangraphs had a short bit on Colvin here. The takeaway line?

Unless his glove is something else, he’s going to hurt the Cubs more than he’s going to help them.

Talk about missing the point. He's going to play twice a week! All you need to do is ask if Tyler Colvin could be replaced by a guy who can do a better job. I don't think Sam Fuld is that guy. Being the sourpuss who rains on the Tyler Colvin parade by pointing out that he's not the second coming of Shawn Green is just being a Debbie Downer.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

It also doesn't take into account attractiveness.

JulieDiCaro said:

Let's hope that "parents" take a valium or get tranquilized prior to the hearing. I did find at least one Google search result where an unhappy parent apparently tried to kill an attorney.

Dempster before Marmol in your draft. Is there still a spot for another team?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

the cool kids draft?

sorry, we're closed. but are you seriously saying someone should have taken marmol first? have you SEEN marmol this spring?

MN Pat said:

user-pic

So I was in the Dells this past weekend (don't ask) and actually got to catch about an inning of the Cubs game against ... well, I don't really remember who it was against. Anyway, is it just me, or is Carlos Marmol starting to morph into Antonio Alfonseca? He's getting a little bottom heavy. Or is that just to balance his ears?

Doc said:

user-pic

He has definitely become a bit rounder in some areas. Not sure what is going on there...all I know is that he had better pitch well...I don't care how big his ass gets.

Did he grow a 6th finger yet?

Dmband said:

user-pic

Guys, I feel comfortable enough to tell you this.

I've officially got Tyler Colvin fever. I hate it, because I feel like we are being stereotypical Cubs fans, loving the guy on the bench and creating a mythical image of him in our heads ala Casey at Bat...

lets just hope this IS joy in "wrigleyville" this year.

Doc said:

user-pic

The fever will go away quickly when he's batting .150 by the end of april. Trust me...I'm a doctor.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

If there is one thing Lou is good at (and there are lots) it's putting part-time players in good situations to succeed. Sure, Felix Pie gets a lot of attention for being the guy who crashed and burned on Lou's watch. But then you have to look at Ronny Cedeno, Micah Hoffpauir, and Jake Fox as players who hit above their pay grade while on limited playing time (although expanded duty revealed their true limits).

And I think Colvin has a higher ceiling than those guys, and the fact remains: he is noticeably stronger this year. Anyone who doesn't think that will have any positive affect on his hitting didn't watch baseball in the late '90s.

Doc said:

user-pic

The problem with Colvin is that he is basically in competition with Nady and possible Tracy/Millar for getting some at-bats as well. Two years ago, with Hoffpauir, last year with Fox (how dare you mention cedeno!) was that due to circumstances on the team, those players were able to get a number of ABs...and they also played in the minor leagues until they were needed. That's why that worked so well.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

I don't think there's any reason Colvin won't be able to get ABs this year. Soriano didn't just lose his leadoff status, I think he's also lost the clout to demand to play every day with no days off ever unless he's on the DL. And I don't think Marlon Byrd is going to log 600 PAs either (he never has and has exceeded 500 PAs just twice). I think he'll get plenty of playing time. I also envision myself saying, "I wish Millar and/or Tracy would get some more at-bats," precisely zero times this year. With Nady on the mend, Colvin will play and (I'm reasonably certain) do pretty well.

Doc said:

user-pic

I hope you are right.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

When you put it that way, the weakness in the argument is pretty glaring.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

oh, we totally are. but as long as it's not sam fuld or ryan theriot, i'm okay with it.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Lou has set the rotation:

Zambrano, Dempster, Wells, Silva and Gorzelanny

Excuse me, I'm going to be sick.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

In lieu of a verbal argument, I decided to add Carlos Silva to my fantasy roster as a way of showing my support for the Cubs temporary/Opening Day rotation.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I'm not going to post a game thread today because I'll be in a meeting when the game starts, but here's the lineup:

SS Theriot
RF Fukudome
LF Colvin
CF Byrd
1B Hoffpauir
2B Fontenot
3B Tracy
C Soto
P Wells.

No D-Lee (foot) --wha? foot? i thought he was out last because of the folding chair injury to his back?

also, paul sullivan reports that ted lilly is scheduled to make his return on april 19 at citifield against the mets.

JulieDiCaro said:

Doc-

Im going to revoke your license to practice medicine when Tyler is batting .566 in July! You'll see! YOU'LL ALL SEE!!!

(runs away sobbing)

Doc said:

user-pic

If he's batting .566 in July...I'll give away my tickets for the rest of the season. (Assuming he doesn't bat only 12 times and then go on the DL by the middle of April).

I guess I should take that whole thing back. I'm sure this is going to happen now.

LostinFla said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

You might be in trouble. He goes 2-3 on opening day (with 2 HRs!), then is HBP in his last AB which breaks a bone in his hand, and he's out till the All-Star break.

Dmband said:

user-pic

Ok Ok...this clearly isnt fair.

He's gotta bat .566 with a minimum of 5 AB'S for it to be valid.

your welcome.

Doc said:

user-pic

um...

I'll give away the tickets...just not to you. :p

Dmband said:

Oh and it has to be .566 exactly.

I swear to God if its .565 the bets off....

keywestcubfan said:

I kind of like it when guys wearing Cub uniforms hit home runs. That's supposed to be a good thing, no? How about Randy Wells? I believe 6 innings one earned run. Sean Marshall out of the pen, 2 innings, no runs, 4 strikeouts.

Manly yes. But I like it too!

Doc said:

user-pic

Well...I was kinda hoping they would suck a bit more this spring...then the Cubs would have no choice but to go out and find another 2nd baseman via trade or something. Now they will make Jim Hendry feel good and we'll go into the regular season, and they will both suck.

Besides, those homers were pointless.

keywestcubfan said:

user-pic

Sure, spring training numbers go away as soon as the regular season starts. And yes, I'd like to see the second (no pun intended) coming of Ryne Sandberg this year, but it's not going to happen. I worry more about Soto, Soriano, D. Lee, and Ramirez sucking than Fontenot and Baker. As far as the homers today, I guess I just dig the long ball.....

Just a heads up for those of us here in 2010 with a real cable/satellite company, it's the Cubs turn with MLB Network's 1-hour season preview show tomorrow night at 8pm ET.

Join the rest of us here in 2010 and get a real cable/satellite company*

*Real cable/satellite company is defined as one that isn't named Dish Network, U-verse, or any other pathetic operation that doesn't allow its viewers that call themselves baseball fans the option of watching MLB Network.

Have you ever noticed that great second basemen like Sandberg do not play for championship teams? Good teams want their power at the corners, with role players up the middle. Think about all the second basemen you want the Cubs to trade for, and what kind of teams they play for. Teams that have really good second basemen do not want to trade them. We are better off with what we have than what we might get, which is probably someone over the hill.
