Friday Cubs Headlines: Un-De-feated!! (clap! clap! clap!clap!clap!)

Well whadddya know, it turns out, we're going to be awesome this year! Bruce Miles, tell us about yesterday's game!

Marlon Byrd homered in his Cubs debut, 1 of 5 home runs in a 16-hit attack that helped open the exhibition season with a 9-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

"Marlon's a professional," manager Lou Piniella said. "He's a hard worker. He's got a good way about him. The players like him."

Signing Byrd to play center field also let Kosuke Fukudome return to right. That's where moody Milton Bradley played last season as part of an experiment gone bad.

The absence of Bradley has made camp more mellow - as have downsized expectations after last season's disappointing second-place finish.

"Not much going on, and that's the way we like it," said Derrek Lee, whose first-inning homer got the offense going. "Everyone's pretty healthy. It has been quiet. It's nice. Just going about our business."

The beneficiary of the businesslike hitting approach was Randy Wells, who didn't allow the ball out of the infield in 2 perfect innings.

Sean Marshall also pitched two perfect innings, which helped make up for the not one, not two, but FOUR baserunning mistakes made by the Cubs yesterday. Kinda. And, in his Cactus League debut, Starlin Castro went 1-3 at the plate and made a couple of slick fielding plays, causing Ryan Theriot to stick out his bottom lip.

For more details on yesterday's victory, check out the box score.

So what's on tap for today's game (which is not being broadcast)?

Carlos Zambrano, hoping to bounce back from a disappointing season, makes his first Cactus League start on Friday when the Cubs play host to the Arizona Diamondbacks at HoHoKam Park. Casey Coleman, Jeff Stevens and John Gaub also are scheduled to pitch. Ben Sheets will make his first start for the Athletics on Friday and it'll be against his former team. The A's play host to the Brewers in Phoenix. Sheets, who had spent his entire career with Milwaukee, missed all of last season following elbow surgery.

In case you missed it yesterday, our good friend Milton Bradley can't get us out of his head. Awwww. We miss you, too, Milty!

''Two years ago, I played, and I was good,'' he told the Times. ''I go to Chicago, not good. I've been good my whole career. So, obviously, it was something with Chicago, not me.''

Bradley, now with the Seattle Mariners, had more to say.

''Just no communication. I never hit more than 22 homers in my career, and all of a sudden I get to Chicago, and they expect me to hit 30. It doesn't make sense. History tells you I'm not going to hit that many. Just a lot of things that try to make me a player I'm not.''

No one in the organization ever publicly (or privately, according to more than one team official) said they expected 30 home runs out of Bradley -- or even stressed his power.

This is a young man who is going to go far in life. Far indeed. He's a real people person.

Over at the Sun-Times, we've got a list of the 50 Best Cubs of All Time, as well as a list of the Worst Cubs Busts of All Time. Something for everyone.

Today's game kicks off at 2:05 CT again, but isn't being broadcast so far. Whether we'll be able to get the Diamondbacks' feed or mlb.com picks up the game remains to be seen.

Don't forget that Saturday afternoon Tim from Tales from Aisle424, Adam from And Counting and I will be doing our own version of MST3K for the first hour of the Cubs game. We can't promise to be funny, but we promise to be entertaining. The link to listen online is here, as is the call-in number. As always, we welcome you to call in and join us.

We're still firming up spots for the May 18 rooftop game, so there's still time to get in! $75 gets you into Skybox on Sheffield, as well as all you can eat and drink! This is a 7:05 game, so none of you can use "work" as an excuse. Ha!

And, because it's Friday:

5 random songs on my iPod:

  • (A Title I'm Not Sure I Should Post): Liz Phair
  • Skyway: The Replacements
  • Take It Easy: The Eagles (Don't you judge me!)
  • Crush: Dave Matthews

Chewbacca - Clerks soundtrack
We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off - Jermaine Stewart (Zack + Miri Soundtrack)
Sweet Hitchhiker - CCR

Also, what's wrogn with Eagles? If I were to judge you for any of those artists it would be DMB.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

You can't judge me for DMB, because people here hate me for hating DMB. But I do like that song.

If you weren't aware, there's a large, vocal, anti-Eagles contingent in the world.

berselius said:

user-pic

bah, I will listen to my Eagles albums today jsut to spite these people.

FrankS said:

user-pic

Yes, but it is mostly comprised of Poco fans. And if you get that reference, I'll be even more surprised than I was that an urban lady like yourself would even mention Buck Owens.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I don't get the reference, but why would I not mention Buck Owens? I love the Bakersfield sound.

FrankS said:

user-pic

Well, you take a bit of the Bakersfield sound and put it to rock and roll and you have Poco, circa 1969. And both of the Eagles' bass players were former members of Poco.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Ahhhh. I get it.

Love alt-country, love bluegrass, love "real" country music.

Reading that someone else hates that band brings me a little smile.

Is that kinda like: "just because you're necessary doesn't mean you're important?"

I think we'll do an Oscar live chat this year. It's too much fun laughing at celebrities to miss.

Even if he's not that great of a player, Fontenot makes a great photographic subject.

abe frohman said:

user-pic

Is that Fontenot? I thought maybe it was an early-season TOOTBLAN by Theriot. I can't tell if there's bad facial hair from the photo.

Edelweiss said:

Fontenot's facial hair only shows up when the light(sun or indoor), shines directly on the blunt ends. It's what Zambrano refers to as "magic hair"

Amazing how fast he went from the Poison Rules pose to Breakin' II: Electric Boogaloo. Someone has an identity crisis.

Maim said:

I think that's the only Liz Phair song worth a damn, anyway. If it's the one I think it is.

We Blame Chicago - 90 Day Men
Debaser - Pixies
Tiny Steps - Elvis Costello & the Attractions
Are The Good Times Really Over... - John Doe & the Sadies
Whip the Blankets - Neko Case & Her Boyfriends

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Perfect choices. I can see at least one (maybe all) of them is sponsored by Milton Bradley.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

WHA?

"Exile in Guyville" is one of my favorite albums EVER.

Maim said:

user-pic

Oh. Hee hee. I have a major anti-Liz Phair streak. She just sounds so BORED when she sings, to me. Like... Lady, if YOU'RE bored and it's your song, how am I supposed to feel?

plamorte said:

"Many Shades of Black" - The Raconteurs
"Bitch Niggaz" - Dr. Dre
"Bound for the Floor (Live)" - Local H
"Hollow Man" - R.E.M.
"Busted" - The Black Keys

Maim said:

user-pic

Also, does anyone mind if I call Marlon Byrd "Andrew Bird" this year? I keep accidentally doing it.

flyball said:

user-pic

I feel like that will be a great measure of how he's doing, the first time you call him Marlon it'll be like he's made it

kind of like when Ron pronounces a name correctly

AndCounting said:

I like you.

RE: Dave (I promise this will by my last post pertaining to the subject)

Here's what I dont get...people seem to be very polarized regarding the band, and somehow he has been identified with drunk frat boys...(understandable considering the fan base)..HOWEVER, if you step back and look at the band, people who are fans of music, HAVE to appreciate the diversity of not only the band members but the music itself...Particularly when you put in to context the medioric rise of DMB occured during the mid to late 90's when the mainstream music scene was comprised of NSync, Ricky Martin, etc. (im not saying that was bad music....Ok maybe I am). I mean, its pretty amazing that given all that, a band comprised of 3 black dudes, 2 white dudes (Dave is a weird guy by the way, not textbook "frontman" by any measure) that includes a fiddle, penny whistle, saxophone and heavy bass lines would become the most succesful touring band of all time.

Alright...I will get off my soapbox...sorry!!!

Dmband said:

several typos in there...you get the point!
