Friday Cubs Headlines: Silva, Starlin, and Saturday Fun

Thumbnail image for silva.jpg

Take that, you beast!! (Photo Chicago Tribune/Phil Velasquez)

Much to everyone's surprise, and contrary to every phyiscal law known to man, Carlos Silva did NOT suck yesterday:

Silva threw three scoreless innings after making an adjustment during a bullpen session, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 8-7 on Thursday.

Silva, acquired from Seattle for Milton Bradley and cash in December, allowed four hits, walked one and struck out none.

"I was excited to be in there again," Silva said. "To be honest, the last two years have been hard for me to show up at the stadium."

Like all of you, I'm not sure what to make of this. Frankly, I blame the Padres. Speaking of laying blame, if Lou and Jim's decision to start Darlin' Starlin in AAA keeps getting harder, they have no one to blame but themselves. Or Starlin Castro's partents, for not having him sooner:

Starlin Castro went 2-for-3 with a homer, 2 RBI and 3 runs as the Cubs beat the Padres 8-7. Castro is 8-for-14 (.571) on the spring, but the Cubs appear to be sticking by their story that he'll open at Class AAA Iowa.

Also today, Bruce Miles takes a look at Kevin Goldstein taking a look at the Cubs' farm system.

As long as we're on prospects, I wanted to point out that Baseball Prospectus ranks the Cubs' farm system eighth in the big leagues, up from 26 last year:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=10183

Author Kevin Goldstein termed last year's first-round pick, Brett Jackson, a "steal." However, Goldstein doesn't seem to buy all the Castro hype: "...while I don't see the true star potential in Starlin Castro that others do, it's reasonable to expect good performances from (3B) Josh Vitters and (SS) Hak-Ju Lee."

In other Cubs' news today, much as been made of whether or not Lou will come back next season. In his "http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/3612" address yesterday. . .

Crane told reporters: "If he feels well and wants to keep going, we'll have an interesting conversation." Wish I could have read the body language on that one. Lou told reporters it's too early to talk about managing beyond 2010. "I'm perfectly comfortable the way the situation is," Lou said. "I'm going to do the best job I humanly can do. Whether I was signed here for one year or signed here for five years, there would be no difference. My job is to get this team to win, and that's exactly what I'm going to focus on and nothing more."

Soooo. .   that tells us absolutely nothing. Thanks, Crane.

In other fun Friday news, Alex Quigley and I have moved our weekly podcast to today Fridays at noon. You can listen today by clicking here!

And finally, Alex is getting to host ChicagoNow Radio tomorrow morning from 9:00-1:00 pm CT, so make sure you all listen and give Alex plenty of support. WGN has obviously never heard our trainwreck of a podcast, because they've asked me to appear as a guest at 10:00 am to talk about Cubs Spring Training. Will I be able to last half and hour without making an inappropriate joke about Silva's weight? Tune in and find out!

Cubs have a split-squad game today: vs. the Brewers at 2:05 this afternoon and against the white Sox tonight at 9:05 on Comcast. Wooo!

I leave you this Friday morning with the most disturbing photo I've ever seen, which I am linking rather than posting because I don't want it sitting on my site all day.

If that's the most disturbing photo you've ever seen, you've obviously never visited 4chan.

i think it just won't go there.

what's so disturbing about it is that the same thing is happening on the other side!

I thought the most disturbing photo I've seen is the one of Silva at the top of the thread.

I'm kind of disturbed that it says thumbnail when my mouse moved near it, as though if I clicked on it, Silva would actually look larger in that Cub uniform. (I thought vertical stripes were supposed to be slimming? Or is it Horizontal?) I seem to recall Silva looked slimmer as a Twin, or maybe it was just the lighting in the dome.

He kind of reminds me of Alex Fernandez in his Marlin days, but not quite Ruben Quevedo large.

Radar Love!! My second favorite Golden Earring song, next to Twilight Zone....but maybe because of the video?

Spin the magical wheel of IPOD and get...
1- Sugar: Fall Out Boy
2- Holiday: Green Day
3-Workin' For a Livin': Huey Lewis and the News...how'd that get there?
4-Sabotage: Beastie Boys
5-Toxicity: System of a Down

Mixing it up this Friday for the playlist, since I haven't added new music in months and have like only 20 artists on this thing, I'm shuffling the songs of one artist and going with 5 songs of theirs

and the winning artist is: Tenacious D.

1. Explosivo
2. Karate
3. Kielbasa
4. Dude (I totally miss you)
5. Kickapoo

I'm in wait-and-see mode on Silva. It would be a definite PLUS if he developed into a starter that could actually get guys out. Not holding my breath, though.

JulieDiCaro said:

Other than DLee and Ramirez, I'm in "wait and see" mode with everyone on this team.

In "Crane Kenny will most certainly be fired after this season" news:

Cubs President Crane Kenney told reporters Thursday that the facility can be built with monies from a Mesa property tax referendum in November and a (1 percent extra) car rental tax.

"The ticket tax is not needed for what we're building," Kenney said.

Followed by what was most certainly a conversation with Ricketts:

But later in the day, Kenney tried to clarify the Cubs' stance, saying the franchise still supports legislative efforts to find "a solution that will be satisfactory to everyone. As far as the Cubs are concerned, all financing options are still on the table."

The cubs have spent a ton of time and money trying to position themselves to have as much leverage as possible....and Kenny says, "You know we dont need the Cubs tax afterall"....

Pretty big mistep there..

I will attempt to dull the pain of the following complaint by prefacing it with a random 5 iPod songs list I can be proud of:

"The Crane Wife 3," The Decemberists
"Play Me," Neil Diamond
"Scythian Empires," Andrew Bird
"Bleeders," The Wallflowers
"West of the Fields," R.E.M.

That share toolbar on the left of the page isn't working atall. I know "at all" are two separate words, I just want to convey the fake British accent I'm using as I say them in yet another attempt to be less annoying as I bitch and moan about the site.

I'm afraid the plan backfired.

gravedigger said:

Nah, I imagine it will be resolved quickly and efficiently, just as the other requests we had like new comment notification, constantly having to re-log in, the comment monster that eats comments, the double and triple posting of comments, the sidebar autonomy, and the extremely slow load times.

Dmband said:

Basically what Sean Penn said in regards to Hugo Chavez was this: He was frustrated at people who refer to him as a dictator because it was Penn's assertion that he had won 12 straight democratic elections.

I dont know enough about the country, but my follow up question to Penn would have been:

How certain can you be of the validity of the elections. "Dictators" always win "elections" in a landslide because they will murder anyone who does vote for them!!!

AndCounting said:

user-pic

They held elections in the Soviet Union, too, no lie. They were always unanimous.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Yeah, that's a stupid thing to say. Still, Ozzie calling him a "rich white guy" was also dumb (and mildly racist) given that Sean Penn has done more for people in New Orleans and Haiti than most of the rest America. Hart to criticize the guy who was out in his own boat rescuing people from rooftops in the 9th Ward when FEMA was nowhere near NOLA.

And besides, how can you be mad at Spicoli?

Dmband said:

user-pic

"doesnt" vote for them.

DustyBaylor said:

Suh-wheet!!! I likes me some live chat...

Dmband said:

user-pic

So how long before the Cubs just admit that they are starting Castro at AAA simply to delay arbitration.

I mean, I get it...but just come out and say it...its a reasonable stance.

I know you guys are not huge fans of the Riot, but I'd feel a lot better with a Castro at SS, Theriot at 2nd lineup...Fontenot at either position is simply not an option IMO and Jeff Baker seems to be the invisible man or something...

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I'd feel a lot better with Theriot at 2B than I would with Fontenot there!

But Theriot said he's "going to fight" for SS. Whatever. It's like the position is a chick or something.

Edelweiss said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Baker has played in 4 games already, the same as Soto, Fukodome,Hill, and Fontenot. He is 0 for 9 so far, but is not invisible.

Dmband said:

user-pic

AC-

Theres probably something about a huge Russian with an AK47 standing next to you while you vote that may impact your decision!!!!

Dmband said:

user-pic

Seemingly, thats a pretty dumb move by Theriot, no?

I mean, the writings on the wall, Castro will be the Cubs SS...he'd be better served trying to carve out the 2nd base position as his own since we have a hole there.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

I like the competitiveness, and I think it's probably pretty effective to create that scenario with Theriot (see how that rhymes?).

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I'm not sure Ryan Theriot is going to light the world on fire with his intellect.

Edelweiss said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

It seems rather strange that some people want to hand the shortstop position to Castro when he hasn't played above high A for more than a few games. He looks good in Spring Training, but is not yet tested. Don't forget what happened in Baltimore. They had their 2001 first round draft pick tearing up the spring training camp in 2004, but he had not played in AAA, and they had Brian Roberts, who had been drafted a few years earlier, and seemed to be doing well at 2B. They did not want him to be on the bench, so they sent him to their triple A team, although they felt he was ready for MLB. The following year, they traded him to the Cubs, who had wanted him in 2001. Of course, we all know that player is little Mikey.

Dmband said:

user-pic

Scenario with Theriot...wow that was impressive.

And Cj....thats friggin hilarious. As I was writing that, I was thinking..."maybe Im giving the Riot too much credit here!"

AndCounting said:

It takes serious freaking nerve to call it a site upgrade when it robs the site of what social-network functionality it had. Get it the hell together, ChicagoNow.

The other part of the discussion about Penn is exactly what Julie touched on. Penn stated that Chavez was extremely helpful in regards to the Haiti effort and that no one here was talking about that, they only want to demonize him. Penn claims that Chavez used his "resources" to help deliver much needed supplies, etc....

I see his point there, and you're right he has done a lot of good with his celebrity...
