Friday Chicago Cubs Headlines: Et Tu, Metal Folding Chair?

chair.jpg

Our latest nemesis. Well played, metal folding chair.

Now that the Cubs have prohibited sneezing, getting out of hot tubs, sitting in dual recliners, and having twisted testicles from the list of players' approved activities, you might think you could breathe a little easier when it comes to worrying about freak injuries to our crusty veterans.

You would be wrong .

MESA, Ariz. -- Derrek Lee was receiving treatment for a back injury incurred in a freak accident in the clubhouse before Wednesday's game against Texas in Surprise.

"He was eating before the game and the chair just collapsed on him," manager Lou Piniella said. "That's why we got him out of there after three innings."

Piniella said Lee was fine and would be back in the starting lineup Friday. Piniella's back is also ailing, and he decided to skip the two-hour trip to Tucson for the Cubs' game at Arizona. Alan Trammell will manage the team instead.

Not to be flip, but this one is right up there with Chad Gaudin falling off a loading dock and Kyle Farnsworth punching a fan. Our players suffer the stupidest injuries ever.

But how did Alan Trammell do with the DLee-less, Lou-less Cubs?

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Tom Gorzelanny helped his cause in the fifth starter's battle Wednesday by becoming the first Cubs starter to work six innings this spring. He pitched well against an Arizona lineup that was minus only Justin Upton from its cast of regulars, leaving with a 7-2 lead through six innings.

That score stood up for the victory.

Gorzelanny, who had been bothered by wildness earlier in the spring, pounded the strike zone against the free-swinging Diamondbacks. He had one walk and went to only one other three-ball count in facing just 23 hitters in the first six innings. He threw just 72 pitches.

"I felt good,'' Gorzelanny said. "I filled up the zone a little better than I did the last time. It was good to get a chance to go out there another inning.''

If you didn't get to see the game, D'Backs starter Dan Haren got absolutely shelled to the tune of 10 hits and 7 earned runs in 4 innings. I believe it was this outing alone that caused Haren to languish on the board in LOHO's Cool Kids Fantasy Draft last night until the late rounds.

So far in the last few days, we've heard that Silva, Gorz, and Marshall are all good bets to make the starting rotation. So who's the Real Slim Shady? Today Lou will tell us!

TUCSON -- Will it be Tom Gorzelanny or Sean Marshall in the Cubs' rotation? Who will Lou Piniella pick between Carlos Silva and Jeff Samardzija?

A decision was expected Friday on the makeup of the Cubs' pitching staff as the team determines which two among the four -- Gorzelanny, Marshall, Silva and Samardzija -- will be in the rotation and which pair goes into the bullpen.

And, now that Darlin' Starlin' Castro has been relegated to the cornfields of Iowa, all eyes have turned to Super Hulk Tyler Colvin. So . .  will her or won't he?

TUCSON, Ariz. - Tyler Colvin says he's been told nothing.

And he's taking nothing for granted as far as having the Cubs' roster made even if a teammate such as Jeff Baker is making some opening-week plans.

"No, I'm not," Colvin said Thursday before going 2-for-4 in the Cubs' 7-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. "Baker was talking to me and was like, 'Hey, Clemson's playing in Georgia that first series. I'm going to call Coach (Jack) Leggett up and get us two tickets.' Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold up on that because you don't know what's going to happen. I'm just going to keep on doing what I'm doing and see what happens."

(snip)

The choice with Colvin may come down to letting him play every day at Class AAA Iowa or getting him spot duty in the major leagues, backing up starting outfielders Alfonso Soriano, Marlon Byrd and Kosuke Fukudome.

Either way seems OK with Colvin.

"My thoughts are I want to help this team any way I can," he said. "If it's coming off the bench and getting a hit there or starting periodically throughout the week, that's great. Whatever I can do to help get some of these guys some rest, I'm going to do whatever I can.

"You still get your work done (coming off the bench). The only thing that it is is getting consistent at-bats. I think that some point I'll get that. As long as I keep taking b.p. (batting practice) and staying with my routine, it should be fine."

Um . . okay, no offense Bruce, but that story helped me not at all. Will it be Tracy or Colvin? I demand facts!

The latest installment of Julie & Alex's Excellent Sports Adventure kicks off today at noon. Will we have a starting rotation by then? Tune in and find out!

Today the Cubs take on the As at 3:05 CT, and guess what? The game is on both WGN tv and WGN radio. Pat and Ron all around. Happy Friday, kids!

As always on Fridays, we bear our souls by revealing 5 random songs on our iPods:

  • The Higwayman: Johnny Cash et al.
  • Amy: Damien Rice
  • Box Full Of Letters: Wilco
  • Screw You: Pat McCurdy
  • Society: Eddie Vedder

I too grew up with Al & Ed, Uncle Bobby, and Spike. The only time I've ever had to pull my car over because I was laughing so hard was listening to Al & Ed on the way home from college.

RIP Sports Central.

Doc said:

Al and/or Ed were great. I'd do my homework listening to them during jr/sr high school. I went off to college, came back...and they were gone.

As long as they are broadcasting Cubs games, I will continue to listen to WGN. No iPhone app will ever change that. But with the exception of the Pat & Ron Show, WGN has completely forsaken its brand. Maybe it's doing fine in the ratings, I haven't checked. But the station has lost itself.

WGN Radio hasn't been the same since they got rid of the Sportwriters show hosted by Ben Bentley. Since the overlords of WGN have worked hard to kill off the tv part of WGN over the past couple of years, it's not surprising they're turning their attention to finishing the job on the radio side.

"Jukebox Heroes"- Foreigner
"Boys & Girls"- Blur
"Use Me"-Hinder
"September Gurls"- The Bangles-RIP Alex Chilton!

Now for the game- 3:05 CT is 1:05 PST? I'm not off until 4:00pm. Perhaps extra innings? Or I will have to turn on WGN news to find out what happened-the only way LA ever talks about the Cubs was when Milton went off.

So now that the pitching rotation/BP has been all but finalized it begs the question, and I have no idea what the answer is,

Who is the last team to win the world series with 3 rookie pitchers in the Bullpen?

Doc said:

user-pic

If I were to take a wild guess, I'd say that one of the two Marlins WS teams may have had 3 rookies in the bullpen.
