A League of Her Own

Wherein We Give Credit Where Credit Is Due

thomas.jpg

Even if you hate the White Sox as much as I do, you have to be sad to see future White Sox hall-of-famer Frank Thomas go.

Circle summer 2014 on the calendar for the enshrinement, Sox fans -- the earliest Thomas can be inducted five years after his last game in 2008. He's a lock.

Employing Hriniak's unique front-foot hitting style that included finishing swings with one hand on the bat, Thomas finished an 18-year career with 521 home runs, 1,701 RBIs, a .301 career batting average and a .419 on-base percentage. He was a contact hitter trapped inside a slugger's body with one of his generation's most discerning eyes at the plate (1,667 walks).

As much as it killed me to watch the White Sox on TV with Hawk Harrelson squawking away in the background, I always stopped what I was doing when The Big Hurt was at the plate. Love him or hate him, he played in this city for 16 years and was probaby the best South Side hitter ever.

See ya in Cooperstown, Frank.

For some reason, people in this town can't seem to stop talking about MARINER Milton Bradley, including Jim Hendry:

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Milton Bradley's tenure with the Cubs could have been different had Bradley gotten off to a better start.

"Offensively, he was the right guy," Hendry said Thursday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on WMPV-AM 1000. "It wasn't like we didn't do our homework. If he'd have hit like he normally did the first couple of months probably a lot of the issues wouldn't have come out. He was probably our best player in spring training."

Whatever. And if Hitler had gotten into art school, things could have been different, too. Move on.

Bruce Miles tries to convince us the Cubs are done signing position players for this season, which depresses me, as this means Mike Fontenot is probably one-half of our starting second baseman:

I've been telling you here the Cubs are done acquiring position players, even though people are still bandying about the names of Johnny Damon and Felipe Lopez.

Silvy tried to get Jim to get specifics about names, but Jim wasn't biting, only to reiterate the Cubs would like a veteran to add to the pen, something he has been consistent about saying since the convention.

"We're not going to sign more position guys," Jim said.

The boys picked apart Jim's comments a little bit after he had hung up, specifically when Jim mentioned Alfonso Soriano hitting .270-.275 and hitting 30-plus homers. I think you take 30-plus homers from Soriano at this point, and if he can get the OBP up to .340 or so (it's never going to be great), I think you take that too, as long as everybody else is doing their part.

We're now less than a week away from pitches and catchers (and Jeff Baker) reporting, and Cubs news is as hard to come by as ever. Luckily, we'll have the Winter Olympics and lots of finely-tuned bodies in skin tight clothing to distract us all for two weeks. By the time the Winter Olympics are over, Spring Training will in full swing.

Don't forgot to pop down a few diaries and sign up for one of LOHO's three fantasy baseball leagues---spots are going fast!

Finally, because it's Friday, here are 5 random songs from my iPod:

Fireflies: Owl City

Change Gonna Come: Sam Cooke

Bad: U2

Witches & Sailors: Chaperone

Back to Black: Amy Whinehouse

Happy Friday, Everyone!

Art school? Are you saying that Milton is Hitler?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

No, I'm just saying I'm sick of talking about what could have been/why it went so wrong. It's over, let's not dwell on it.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

No, you were clearly hinting something with the "art school" comment. You went there.

JulieDiCaro said:

What the hell are you talking about?

gravedigger said:

So, I'm back at work, and I think I'm even MORE bored than usual.

Yes, I think the inference would be that being peevish around Cub fans is somehow equated to exterminating millions of innocents.

It wouldn't be a complete day if I didn't totally offend someone!

The Police are overrated?

Uh. . . false. What the hell is wrong with you?

I'll toss The Supremes out there.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Yeah, they're overrated. They're way overrated. Pseudo-intellectual drivel. I mean, they're not awful, but they wouldn't be nearly so beloved if Sting weren't so sexy.

JulieDiCaro said:

I'm not sure we can be friends anymore.

AndCounting said:

Oh, my brother and I get along fine, and he worships the Police.

Yes...the Police are way way overrated. Musically they are simpletons...lyrically they are slightly better.

Steward Freaking Copeland -- a musical simpleton??? What sounded anything like Outlandos d'Amour before 1978??

Maim said:

I can't get behind a band who hated each other so much they positioned themselves so they wouldn't have to look at each other when they played.

Also, I am biased against The Police because I used to have a supervisor who blasted them nonstop every single day. They now make me shudder.

Doc said:

And I'm not FROM Wisconsin. I just happen to have taken a 15 year vacation up here...that's all.

So what is the date for the over under on when the Cubs and reporters stop talking about Milton Bradley?
Pandora playlist
Rush - Tom Sawyer
Zeppelin - The Rover
Pink Floyd - Pigs(Three Different Ones)
Queen - Under Pressure
AC/DC - Back in Black

Doc said:

user-pic

That is just about the greatest list I've ever seen posted here.

jmkobus said:

Pandora.com Rush radio station. Its a never ending stream of Police, Zep, Floyd, Queen, Rush, and so many more awesome bands

AndCounting said:

user-pic

At no point this season will that happen. The Cubs play the Mariners in June, so whatever lull there might be will go away then. The better Milton does, the more he'll be talked about (We were wrong!). If he does bad, he'll be talked about (You were wrong for telling us we were wrong!). It's just the way it is, I'm afraid.

As long as we are complaining about Chicago Now, is there any chance they are going to make it so it is easy to read new comments? Because over at SBN when you log in, it keeps track of the comments you've read and the new ones will be in yellow and you can just hit the Z key to scroll to them. I come back here and I have to pretty much reread everything to find the new comments.

gravedigger said:

Def Chicago Now. And yeah, it just fucking did it again. Seems to do it after I post a comment.

And since I am a comment monster and have to comment on everything, it happens to me a lot.

So the Cubs are having a ticket "Presale" starting on monday at 10am.

?

Does that mean we are going to have to purchase the LOHO day tickets earlier than normal this year and pay a 20% premium just to get them before the general sale next friday? Will bleacher tickets be included on this sale?

Questions questions questions...Getting tickets used to be much simpler.

Blue Skies - Harry Connick, Jr.
You're Gonna Get What's Coming - Robert Palmer

If I had to take one band's catalog with me on a desert island, it would be The Stones.

Doc said:

That list is great, as long as it is Derek and the Dominoes Layla...if it's that unplugged crap version, then that list just sucks.

JulieDiCaro said:

Derek and the Dominoes were da bomb. Check this out:

Aw, c'mon -- the greatest, most painful, soaring love song of the rock era done as if by Donny Swift and his Korg keyboard/drum machine at the Topeka airport Holiday Inn lounge? Got a problem with that?

I wept openly when he "lounge-lizarded" it at his shows with Winwood last summer, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

berselius said:

Damn, CNN is so behind sometimes. Their headline says a luger practicing was "seriously injured." Well, that's one way to put it.

Another way to put it: he died

Story has been out for an hour and CNN still has it wrong -- and as their main headline.

Actually, Georgia is on the Black Sea, near Armenia. I watched the practice today, and the other scary thing is that an Italian luger also crashed. (Armin Zöggler). I am staying with the Italian team because there was no more room in the U.S. part of the village. Armin says he is OK. Actually, the only reason I am posting is to see if my little Netbook works.
