Chicago Cubs Thursday Headlines

CANADA-WHISTLER-WINTER OLYMPICS-SNOW SCENE .

Once again, there's little-to-nothing to report today. In fact, the lead story is a retread from the Cubs Convention - the Theriot/Fukudome combination at the top of the order. Good Ol' Sully gives us his take on the situation.

Going by numbers, Fukudome seems like a better fit. Though he only had 161 at-bats in the leadoff spot last year, Fukudome led all National League leadoff men with a .404 on-base percentage. He hit only .269 there, but still drew 30 walks. Theriot hit .283 in 173 at-bats in the leadoff spot, with a .354 on-base percentage and 27 strikeouts with 18 walks.

Batting Fukudome, one of only two left-handed hitting starters, leadoff wwould give Piniella even less balance. Mike Fontenot would bat seventh if he starts at second, and if Jeff Baker plays second against some right-handers, Fukudome could be their only left-handed hitting position player.

Not only are the Sox pissed off about the proposed ticket surcharge to pay for the Cubs, now the entire Cactus League stands against it.

A White Sox attorney said all Cactus League teams oppose a proposed surcharge on spring training tickets to help pay for a new complex for the Cubs in Mesa. The amount of the surcharge has yet to be established, but the Cubs are in for a fight no matter how much it is.

"All 14 other Cactus League teams oppose House Bill 2736 as introduced," John Kaites, a Phoenix attorney and lobbyist who represents the Mariners and White Sox, told the Phoenix Business Journal. "We are working persistently with legislative leadership in the House to construct an alternative plan that will work for everyone, including the Cubs."

I'd say, "Fine. We're going to Naples, jerkfaces!"

Here's another bit to add to the file "Why the Royals Suck":

Royals pitching coach said Wednesday that Kyle Farnsworth will compete for a job in the starting rotation.

"We're going to lengthen him out and see how it goes," McClure said. "Because what he showed me last year was the ability to back off a little bit and not pitch with his hair on fire. And, to be a starter, you have to be able to just kind of go pitch-by-pitch."

Last season, the ex-Cub got got hammered on Opening Day -- nailed with the loss as the White Sox's Jim Thome hit a three-run homer. In the end he was 1-5, 4.58 ERA in 41 games.

"I've heard of crazier things tried, believe me. I don't think it's that far-fetched," McClure said.

Finally, if you're looking for something to do April 10, look no further. The good folks over at Wasting Away in Wrigleyville are hosting their annual Second Annual Pub Crawl. It's a Saturday, and the plan is 9 bars in 9 innings. Available to purchase will be Pub Crawl t-shirts and beer coozies. Can you think of a better way to spend an early-spring Saturday afternoon? I thought not.

No worries, I got you already!

Um . . . why are we talking about Fontenot starting a 2nd? Jeff Baker is our starter, right?

RIGHT?

The conundrum of Mike Fontenot is that he's left handed...and the fact that, if you believe, like me, that Xavier Nady is going to force Fukudome to the bench, the whole Cubs lineup would be right handed.

That's not good.

JulieDiCaro said:

It doesn't matter if someone is right or left-handed if he can't hit the damn ball from either side of the plate.

It's more for appearances than anything else.

I thought that first link said "retard from the convention" and thought, "great, now were gonna have Sarah Palin showing up over here."

Gravedigger nice insensitive idiotic comment. Maybe you shoud spend one day with a child or youth with developmental disabilities.

I guess you don't get it!
calling someone a retard is like using the "N" word. Your mother must be proud!

Argle bargle.

I wasn't making fun of kids with developmental disabilities. I was making fun of Sarah Palin.

But anyway, welcome to LOHO. I'm gravedigger, the resident asshole/alcoholic.

And yes, my mom is proud of me.

You're really not an asshole, gd. You're just not afraid to say what you think and feel. Alcoholic on the other hand....

gravedigger said:

I just like to rile people up. Usually Julie, but anyone really.

gravedigger said:

Also, god dammit, I was making fun of Sarah Palin. Look, I put up with her longer than anyone else, I feel it is my duty to do so.

flyball said:

I think his (or her) issue was in using that particular word to make fun of her

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Whatever. Like I said, that's what I thought I read.

And my first thought before my mind corrected itself was "We're Palin's next target."

And we were. So I was right.

Doc said:

user-pic

It's funny because of how Palin, herself, treats that word.

gravedigger said:

THANK YOU

GD I owe you an appology, I just caught up on 3 days worth of news during lunch (thanks Jon Stewart) and now I get it

That wasn't supposed to be right there. It was supposed to be me covering my ears and not hearing that you voted for Old Lady Scarypants three times.

gravedigger said:

Please allow me to explain myself.

First was in the primary when she ran for Gov - I wanted her to take out Murkowski. This was a worthy cause, trust me.

Second, I wanted her to BE gov. She was wildly popular, and had good ideas. I promise, this is true.

Third, after she started to reveal some of her batshit tendencies, I still voted for her on McCain's ticket because I live in DC and wanted a job with the VP. Figured, as an Alaskan, I'd have a lead there.

I'm glad that didn't pan out.

Carl knows how to turn me on, with that picture he posted on today's column. Skiing is much sexier than baseball, which is why I will be in Vancouver while Carl and Julie are sweating in Mesa.

I don't think Gravedigger should be anywhere near any child or youth of any kind.
