Monday Cubs Headlines: Super Bowl Hangover
Why, Colts, why?Since it took two hours to pry my eyes open through my dried tears, today, we'll play headlines as we go!
First up, dear old
Blago got a forum in the Tribune, and managed to say quite a bit. Here he is comparing himself and the Cubs:
Under Hendry and Piniella, the Cubs are a top-tier team. I tried
to make the case that the Cubs were doing so good because I was the
governor. Look at my record as governor, and look at the Cubs, right?
Last year we both got hijacked. I had a worse year than the Cubs.
Next, Blago takes a tough stand on politicians who change sports loyalties:
They're phonies (1); Durbin is one of those. Durbin likes all
three teams, Cardinals, Cubs and Sox. When he's in Chicago he's a Cubs
fan, but how can you root for all of them? Quinn is a Sox fan, but when
he was asked who he's for, and if you live in Illinois vote against
that phony, he says he's a Chicago fan. No such thing. I disagree with
Daley and Obama, but I admire that they at least admit that they are
Sox fans.
And reminds us of his own integrity:
I got in big trouble back in 2005, when the Sox won the World
Series, and I wouldn't put the Sox hat on. I was getting maligned in
the media. It would have been hypocritical of me to put the Sox hat on
as a loyal Cubs fan. It would have been dishonest. I hope (Cubs fans)
appreciate my integrity now.
Blago even misses giving advice to Jim Hendry. What does
Jim Hendry miss about Blago?
As if Jim Hendry didn't have enough problems this winter, it recently was revealed former Gov. Rod Blagojevich said he missed dispensing advice to his old pal, the Cubs general manager.
So was Blagojevich pushing the Milton Bradley
signing? Was he the one who pointed out Aaron Miles' sterling batting
average during day games? Was this alleged ''bromance with Blago'' the
real deal?
Hendry shook his head and laughed.
"Well, the governor was a big Cubs fan," he said. "He came around every
now and then and was always friendly and nice. He showed his passion
for the club, and every now and then he'd say: 'What about that guy?
Can we get that guy?' There were few instances like that, but no, I
didn't take his advice."

Good luck with that one, Blago

There were a couple more things to post from the Hendry article, but I can't get them to save... so if you want to know more, go ahead and read the whole thing. It's really not very informative. Just that Hendry shoulders the blame for last season's free agent busts and he thinks this year's time is "quite a bit better" than last.
AndCounting said:
Holy mother of love, I'm so glad Hendry answered that question the right way. Never, ever, ever say you took advice from Blago.
I especially like the part about appreciating Blago's integrity as a fan. Who wants to break it to him that when you stand out among Chicago/Illinois politicians as the crooked one, no one appreciates you for your integrity?
And sorry about your Colts, Carl. I really wish they had lost three years ago and won this year. I really, really do.

I'm with you Adam, if only the Bears had beat them, then I wouldn't have been pushing for the Saints so much this year...stupid Colts.

Unfortunately, Blago doesn't stand out among the crooked politicians in this state. There are many dirty politicians in this state. He was just so dumb that he got caught.

I think Blago was one of the Oceanic 815 survivors, and he's currently living out his alternate reality after Juliet blew up Jughead.
There's no other explanation for his batshitness.
JulieDiCaro said:
So Blagojevich is responsible for Aaron Miles.
Actually, that makes a lot of sense.
itsjenjen said:
Blago is so delusional I think he even believes his own lies. As for the Sox hat, how juvenile. As the Chief Exec of the state he could have worn the hat once to salute a team from his OWN state. What a slap in the face to his south side constituents. His integrity? Non-existant. I wish he would just go away.
FrankS said:
I'm sure that Rod believes his lies. That's part of being a psychopath.
I can't blame him for not wearing the Sox gear though. He has always identified himself as a Cub fan. It would have insulted his south side constituents MORE had he worn the Sox cap. I don't want to see Obama wearing any Cubs gear if they ever win either. Don't insult my intelligence. I know you're a Sox fan. Don't try to patronize me by wearing my team's logo and colors.

no, he just showed up to school early
AndCounting said:
When they start letting kids in the doors, school is in session. I refuse to believe otherwise.
flyball said:
no, school starts when being late means detention
AndCounting said:
Being on time is late. Five minutes early is on time. Two weeks early is the start of school.

6/19 was good for me last year, best at-game experience I've ever had.
That was the first of the Cleveland series and featured: a pre-game tropical downpour (with us walking 10 blocks from our "GREAT" free parking spot); promotional Cubs apron; rousing 2-minute standing O for DeRo's first AB; a clash of pitching titans featuring Cliff Lee (7 inn/3 ER) vs Harden (his typical 5 innings/6 ER); a Soriano error (duh); a 4-run 8th and D-Lee homer off Woodsie (SWEET!) in the 9th to tie it; and the 10-inning game-winner by The Riot (look it up! He WON the game!).
All told - sheer awesomeness.

With an monster snow storm on the way, I gotta tell you when I read these dates, I literally closed my eyes for two seconds and pictured being at Wrigley in the summer time and it made me very happy. Even though this team drives me fucking nuts sometimes, those moments are why I love baseball/the Cubs.
Sorry for the introspective post...its monday after the superbowl.
