Chicago Cubs Headlines for Monday: Rampant Speculation

South Mimms Skiing
There is exactly jack for Cubs news to report today. This might have something to do with the fact that it's 6 AM on the Monday after the holiday weekend. I prefer to blame Jim Hendry's inaction.

So today, dear LOHOers, I'm turning to the bleacher report, whose Padres guy spent all weekend dreaming up trades. He managed to imagine a three-way between the Padres, Red Sox and Cubs, with it looking something like this:

So assuming what we know (again, this may all be purely fiction, though fiction can sometimes be fun), here's what this possible blockbuster trade may look like.

To Boston:

Adrian Gonzalez (from San Diego), Ryan Theriot (from Chicago)

To San Diego:

Clay Buchholz (from Boston), Ryan Westmoreland (from Boston) plus another mid level prospect or two

To Chicago:

Jacoby Ellsbury (from Boston)

If that were to happen, would it be the biggest steal since Aramis and Kenny Lofton? I'd estimate the potential of this trade at about -17%.

There's not much else to be had in the way of news, so if you find something, feel free to post it in the comments section. Thanks for playing and have a swell day.

This team makes me feel tired. Or maybe its the staying up late. But I prefer to blame the team.

Why do we now have to share "Recent comments" with other blogs?

I swear to christ CN wants me to hate it.

Here...I'm going to say it again.

Reed Johnson is the best person to play center field for the Cubs.

I kind of don't care anymore. Johnson, Fuld, Byrd, Colvin. 2010 is going to suck anyway, so why do I give a shit.

too bad he'll be in the Bronx

and even then he'll be the best option . . .

Meh.

I like Reed, but not as an every day player. And I don't know if either Sam Fuld or Tyler Colvin is ready to be the main part of center field platoon.

you don't understand this game, it's called "hitch your wagon to one of our three possible terrible CFers."

The real point is that if they go into 2010 with ANY of these guys as their starting CF, given the other holes they have, they are not going to be a playoff contender.

But it is a moot point since they're going to lose 100 games anyway.

only 100 games? why so optimistic?

gravedigger said:

Well, honestly, I think they'll go 1-161.

That's better.

JulieDiCaro said:

huh? oh, i don't know. why do i get called out for being a douchebag on anything?

gravedigger said:

I think that was some sort of automated thing, people re-tweeted you calling someone a douchebag, that thing picked up on it, and called you a douchebag? I don't know, I thought it was weird.

In all lower-case seriousness, I'm having difficulty even thinking about the Cubs right now. Maybe Jim Hendry is feeling that way, too, I don't know. I'll be ready to react when a deal goes down, but I lack the energy to speculate properly.

That's a nice little dream, but it basically means the Cubs would end up trading Theriot straight-up for Ellsbury, which I doubt is possible. However, as the self-appointed President of the Jeff Baker Fan Club, I highly endorse this trade scenario.
