The Blue Jays want to move Roy Halladay this offseason and have contacted the Cubs about a potential trade, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat. However, it's unlcear if the Cubs have room for another $15.75MM in payroll. Plus, they'd have to be willing to part with top prospects, such as shortstop Starlin Castro, to obtain the Jays' ace.
Okay, so I was excited until I got to the last sentence.

OMG, do it do it do it.
Starlin is awesome in the minors, true. But pitching wins in the postseason, and a league change always favors the pitcher.
Do it do it do it do it do it do it.

OK, I'd like to take this chance to wonder what is so freaking great about Starlin Castro. A 19-year-old who hasn't played higher than AA. There is just a crazy buzz around him.
I'm talking about selling high on the Starlin Castro bubble.

Is it Castro that Matt is in love with? Or Castillo? I can never remember.
Umbra said:
I think Castro. Wellington Castillo can be dealt, too. We already have a catcher.
Umbra said:
Also, Matt just likes Castro because he's a pinko commie.
cubbiejulie said:
We have a chubby, weedsy catcher. We might need Castillo, yet.
Maybe Matt is in love with Luis Castillo?

seems like most cub fans liked that chubby catcher in 2008.
cubbiejulie said:
Duh--that's when he was John Kruk chubby and could hit the ball. This season, he was Gledon Rusch chubby. Not nearly as adorable.

It's a tough one isn't it? Do you trade a prospect who looks good and who you could really use (among many others probably) AND add greatly to payroll when you've said you wouldn't for a player who's already very, very good? I've had a man-crush on Halladay for quite awhile but I gotta say I don't see it happening. Too bad. I blame you and all your stupid contracts Jim Hendry!
cubbiejulie said:
This is my feeling. Would LOVE to see it happen, have much doubt that it will.
badass said:
even if it did happen, lou would yank him after 5-6 innings. than bring in some yoyo th blow the game.
badass said:
you could get him with out giving up castro. hendry should have gotten peavy last spring for players he later traded and became nothing.

The Cubs always have room for payroll. And even if Castro does turn out to be Hanley Ramirez II, I make that deal.
cubbiejulie said:
But given that the Cubs have developed him, chances are that he won't.
FrankS said:
My worry wouldn't be about whether Castro is great for another team, but whether Halladay's shoulder or elbow will explode once he becomes a member of the Cubs. The Brock for Broglio trade wouldn't have been so bad if Broglio's arm hadn't gone south.
badass said:
my problem is lou being here. if he's leaving after 2010 than i say leave now. start fresh now, why 2011?
cubbiejulie said:
Okay, I HAVE to have a Tom Skilling Snuggie. Toute de suite.

This is good only if they take the Blue Jays take Bradley too.
cubbiejulie said:
yeah, the blue jays fired riccardi, remember?
Doc Blume said:
Oh...
Damn.
There aren't as many stupid GMs these days.

throw in lou and hendry.

This is at least more worthy of unending discussion than talking about Curtis Granderson. The problem is, even if the Cubs wouldn't ever regret trading any of the prospects in their system, I can't see how this happens.
They can't cut payroll without dumping someone valuable. Fukudome, Bradley, and Soriano are virtually untradeable unless the Cubs eat salary, which defeats the purpose. So you'd have to trade Zambrano, Lee, or Ramirez. Z and Lee both have no-trade clauses and Ramirez might too (I'm not sure about his).
But let's assume that they are all really excited to go play elsewhere, is the net gain of Halladay minus a key member of the Cubs core PLUS half of the farm system really worth doing?
AndCounting said:
I think if Hendry says, "Hey, Tom, if we can acquire Halladay, can you pay for him?" I'd expect Ricketts to respond by singing "Holiday" by Madonna and throwing cash at him.
He would then raise ticket prices more than expected, and Cub fans would shrug their shoulders, break into song, and begin throwing even more money.
FrankS said:
And as I have been told many times, in capitalism the object is to get the highest possible price for your product. Since the Cubbie faithful continue to pay top dollar for the product, why not increase the ticket prices? Why do they even bother with the propaganda that the money will serve to improve the team or the facility? Just so people can feel better about how much money they are spending on entertainment? It's all a sham.
Aisle424 said:
That's marketing. I'm wondering what the market will be like this year. A LOT of people got stuck with tickets last year that they could barely even give away.
I paid $5 for a $50 seat from a scalper and the only reason I paid that much is I felt like a dick offering less.
AndCounting said:
Contrary to our own propaganda, the faith of the Cubbie faithful is not a constant, at least as that's measured by spending. As a group we are in the midst of an extended surge in spending and attendance, but if you track the paid attendance over the last couple of decades, you'll see that attendance more or less rises and falls according to the quality of the product on the field. Cub fans don't require championships, but they do require somewhat competitive teams or record-setting individual performances.
NadaSurf2009 said:
Soriano will cost the Cubs Holladay, too.
Did you Cub fans see that his contract calls for $18 mil through 2014 and THEN A BALOON PAYMENT of over $20 mil?
ROFL.
cubbiejulie said:
Is this REALLY Nada Surf? ;)
Yes, I always knew I would wind up hating Soriano's contract, I just didn't think I would start hating it in year 3. :(

the next manager will bench Sorry-ano till he begs for a buy out.

you're rehashing (old news)what you are bitching about. as for Castro, keep him and still get Halladay. use your head. the problem with Hendry is he likes old average players, plus having Lou who should be in his rocking chair. did u know that in the Cubs whole farm system Fuld is concidered their best CF'er. just saying.

I'm late on this but I want to play devil's advocate. Trade the Jays Theriot, but keep Castro. I think we've seen the limits of what Ryan Theriot as an MLB SS and hitter.

Sorry. The deadline for playing devil's advocate passed at noon today.
