Cardinals 41, Bears 21 (Final)
Don't you wish Dennis Green was still the coach of the Cardinals? Because that was fun. Other things I routinely wish for include Brian Urlacher playing, an Offensive Line, and for Ron Turner to steal the Colts' offensive playbook.
So okay, we're a Cubs blog most of the time, but most of us ARE Bears fans. And we've been asked to fill in this week. So "bear" with us. Get it? Get it?
Today the Bears (4-3) take on the Arizona Cardinals (4-3) at Soldier Field. Heading into today's game, the Bears are tied with Green Bay (4-3), 2.5 games behind the hated Minnesota Vikings and He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. For those who are curious, his name rhymes with Schmett Smarve.
If the Bears want to have a shot at the post-season, today's as close to a must-win as you can get.
Bear down!
Scoring summary below the jump. . .

The further this game progresses, the more appropriate is seems to call on Jim Mora to sum it up:

How excited are we that the game is on FOX-NY today? It's sunny and 65 and I'm on the sofa. But hey, all the windows are open, so it's more like being outdoors than sitting in my sports bar would have been. Cheaper, too.
Maim said:
Map Room has the windows all open and it's nice and breezy in here.

We are excited!
I've got the windows open here, too, and I'm under a blanket. Feels like real football weather.

The Jets should have a bye every week so FOX-NY can show all the Bears games. :-)

What do we think the over/under on how many times Cutler gets hit today?

Do I detect the dulcet tones of Joe Buck?

Oh damn. WTF Harris?
Maim said:
Good job, Tommie.
JulieDiCaro said:
What the hell did he do that for?
Stay classy, Tommie.
JulieDiCaro said:
Tommie Harris ejected from the game for slugging a Cardinal in the head well after the play ended.
Sigh.

The Chicago-Saint Louis-Arizona Cardinals made that look easy, didn't they? Adding insult to injury is the fact that Joe Buck, the only play-by-play announcer who has the uncanny ability to make every fan think he dislikes their team, IS the play-by-play announcer for Fox today.

How quick does the Bears D spot the Cards another 7 points?

Now maybe the defense can try real hard to not suck.

KPOM said:
100
JulieDiCaro said:
over.
ataccini said:
44 1/2. Which they'll blow away if Bears D doesn't show up.
KPOM said:
Are you sure that wasn't the over/under for the first half?
dr401k said:
The Cards will be the over by themselves.

I'd also like to find a way to blame Milton Bradley, if possible.
KPOM said:

This was the "critical series" for the defense? I'd hate to see a plain old, ordinary series. That was way too easy for Warner and Arizona. Fitz could score 100 today by himself.
dr401k said:
Let's take the heat off of Ron Turner and the O line.
Mike Burzawa said:
WHEW - that was close! Bears nearly coughed up the kickoff. Um, that's a live ball out there fellas!

So sad to say, but if we can hold them to 21 for the half, I'll be happy.
ataccini said:
Looks unlikely.
ataccini said:
GAH!
JulieDiCaro said:

Mike Burzawa said:
18 first downs for the Cards already with 5 minutes left in the first half. Ugh.
Mike Burzawa said:
Make that 19. Breaston shows the Bears how to run an end around. WOW! This is getting really ugly. AZ with a season high in rushing yards. And another TD for Warner.
ShieldsUpCaptain said:
The Broncos are lovin' this. Next years pick in the Cutler trade is gonna be in the top 10.
popa2103 said:

ataccini said:
At this point, I wouldn't mind.

JulieDiCaro said:
Good idea. It's on the scoring summary page.
KPOM said:
The only difference is that you actually can blame this one on the defense. Other than that, it's perfect. Maybe Lovie can do a rant.
masabe said:
after the nice forte run my son asked how can they mess this up. Oh, offensive pass interference...
ShieldsUpCaptain said:
Don't tell your son how the Bears can screw things up. Let the young man enjoy his youth.
AndCounting said:
Literally 5 Arizona Cardinals. As opposed to the metaphorical meaning of 5. Thanks, Buck.
KPOM said:
We can get within 18 with a field goal here!!!
KPOM said:
Or we can give up a 59-yard return on the blocked FG.
Mike Burzawa said:
Lovie must be thinking we can kick a field goal and get some momentum heading into the half like in Cinci! Time for a long snapped audible for a fake. What the heck do we have to lose?
Badmoodman said:
Ya know, the 2009 Bears really deserve to have someone at quarterback like Bob Avellini.
masabe said:
at least robbie gould was paying attention
popa2103 said:
Our best tackler is Robbie Gould.
Badmoodman said:
Wow, Rolle almost Hester'd the Bears.
Mike Burzawa said:
Robbie Gould with a TD saving tackle on a missed field goal return attempt. Only WE get to do that. Only question is how many points AZ can score with 22 seconds left.
ShieldsUpCaptain said:

Lovie: We're only down 24 points. Good thing I'm calling the defensive plays.
Badmoodman said:
Jay Cutler to his agent: "You SURE there's no escape clause in that new contract?"
Mike Burzawa said:
Cards twist the knife and kick a field goal after blocking and returning our miss. Ugliest half of football ever. Worse than the Cinci game because this is happening at home. It's like having someone come over to your house and take a dump on the living room rug.

dr401k said:
Not sure but WGN is showing Inspector Gadget.

Its nice to see that our defensive genius of a head coach cant figure out that Larry Fitzgerald is killing the bears in man coverage. Its so nice to see that this team has come to another game so unprepared.
Not to mention the quarter back we all so coveted wont last long because the moron GM has given him no protection at the o line. The defense, was that Angelo's only saving grace? why is he still around?
AndCounting said:
Yeah, Fitzgerald is killing them, as is Breaston, as are the running backs and the other receivers. If you're gonna lose every battle, what coaching decision will change that?
kevin said:
It reminds me of the game against the Panthers back in 2005 in the playoffs. They let steve smith run all over them and that opened up everything else.. Fitzgerald has over 120 yards so far today, the next closest is 31 receiving. that has opened up the running game for them. who would have thought the cards suck at running the ball.

ShieldsUpCaptain said:
The Cubs?
HA HA HA HA!!!!!
That's a team with over 100 YEARS of consecutive futility. THEY are our best hope?
Time to lobby for an expansion team in Chicago so we have somebody new to root for.
kevin said:
I didn't say the best chance, i said they had a realistic chance. They did finish over .500 last year and it wouldn't take much for them to win the central again.
ShieldsUpCaptain said:
That's right. When dealing with Cubs fans "over .500" equates to realistic chance.
Nevermind the chumps on the field and 100 years of futility.
Realistic based on what?
Do you really see them competing with the Phillies, Dodgers or Cardinals next year?
berselius said:
Thanks for reminding me. I forgot that 100 years of not winning the world series starts the cubs at -5 wins to start the season. Sheesh
ShieldsUpCaptain said:
Just keep telling yourself, "This is the year."
Then in June transistion to, "There's always next season."

kevin said:
They finished 7 games out of the NL central title and over .500. They aren't that far from getting back into the playoffs. The Cards are losing the main reason they finished where they did, Matt Holiday. The cubs have a realistic chance if they improve the bullpen. If they had cut in half the amount of blown saves this year, they would have won the central.
I also just dont see the cards entire pitching staff having career years again.

Now would be the perfect time for the Cardinals to experience a flash forward like that TV show so the Bears can actually do something on defense.
Badmoodman said:
Our Bears, with their fancy quarterback, are such teasers.

Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue.

Troy Aikman says the Bears are bad at football.
Sadly, I have to agree.
Badmoodman said:
"Troy Aikman says the Bears are bad at football." - - The Bears would be bad at NAIA football.

Let's hope the Bulls continue to improve and Rose gets healthy - and Marion Hossa becomes a big impact skater like he was with the Red Wings.

I feel sorry for Cutler. It must suck to get hit that much.
ShieldsUpCaptain said:
Especially since he's having a great game. Too bad the offensive line doesn't hit that hard.
JulieDiCaro said:
I bet Urlacher would like to crack some skulls over on our bench.

Well...the Halo 3 players in my home have hijacked the TV...I guess they deemed the game "uncompetative"

Is Jay Cutler the modern Chicago version of Ernie Banks and Ryne Sandberg? (Great players on crappy teams destined to never win a title.)
Ghost of Halas said:
Just a tad early to be asking that question. Jay Cutler has a few years of playing a whole hell of a lot better than he has so far in his short career to earn the label of 'great'.
JulieDiCaro said:
Huzzah! Now we get to play Samuari Mike on short rest!

I think the Bears were conserving their energy for the Niners. Yeah, I'm gonna go with that one.

Bigger facepalm - this Bears game or the Packers losing to the winless Bucs?
KPOM said:
Crack open the Stroh's! The last winless team has won, meaning the 2008 Detroit Lions will remain the only 0-16 team in NFL history.
Umbra said:
Packers. Aaron Rodgers played as well as the rookie starting his first game. Taucher hurt his knee, so Barbre got more playing time. Six sacks. Puke puke puke puke puke.

It's time to fire the Bears defensive coordinator and the head coach who appointed himself as that defensive coordinator! Kind of like killing two birds with one stone, only it's really just one doe doe bird to deal with! Adios Lovie, you're a great guy and that's where it ends!
JulieDiCaro said:
For whatever reason, I still don't blame Lovie. I blame Jerry Angelo for putting this shitty-ass team together and not getting a younger Offensive Line. And for getting a great QB an no one for him to throw to.
But I'm probably just delusional.
FrankS said:
Julie,
You are starting to sound like a certain Dusty Baker apologist. I might be wrong here, but I don't believe that Angelo works in a vacuum. I do believe that Lovie is consulted regarding player decisions.
I blame the entire management of the Bears. Obviously there is a dearth of talent on this team. But Lovie still gets the blame for the performance of the defense. That is his baby and he can't seem to recognize that everyone has figured out his Cover-Two defense. Heck, if Cleveland had started Brady Quinn last week, the Bears probably would have lost that game too.

Man we had all these people here and I wasn't around to show off my talents.

Can we not run the Tampa Two anymore? Or, like, hire a coach who isn't married to one system? If it doesn't work, it doesn't work.
JulieDiCaro said:
So ticked off by this game that I had to head out to Caribou to chill in front of the fire. Seriously, my 8-year old can see what the Bears are doing wrong, and he only played one season! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!
ruford said:
come on LOVIE HAS LOST THIS TEAM!!!!! **** FIRE HIM NOW ****
I ALSO FEEL FOR JAY THESE GUYS DON'T KNOW HOW TO WORK WITH A QB THAT DOESN'T QUIT.
HOW CAN YOU QUIT RUNNING YOUR ROUTE JUST BECAUSE IT APPEARS THAT THE PLAY BREAKS DOWN!!!!!
FAVRE WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN AS GREAT AS HE WAS/IS IF HIS COMPLEMENT OF RECEIVERS QUIT EVER TIME THE PLAY BROKE DOWN
JulieDiCaro said:
I agree that our recievers suck at running routes.
ruford said:
THATS SUGAR COATING IT......I AM A BEARS FAN OVER 4 DECADES AND THIS IS JUST BAD BAD FOOTBALL THE COACHES ALL NEED TO GO... TURNER FOOLS NO ONE EITHER DO JAY A FAVOR AND TRADE HIM BEFORE HE GETS TORN TO SHREDS PLAYING FOR THE BEARS....
JulieDiCaro said:
STOP YELLING AT ME~!!!!!!!!!
I'm not sugar coating anything. I just said our receivers suck at running routes. How is that sugar coating. I think the front office, the coaching staff, and 90% of the players suck. How's that?
gravedigger said:
That's sugarcoating it.
JulieDiCaro said:
I'll sugarcoat you.
gravedigger said:
That sounds dirty.

I liked your first statement better. Your use of regular grammar use lends credibility to your point. Also, you usually do a good job of expressing rational, well thought out ideas, instead of making knee-jerk reactions based soley on what a team has done in the last 4 weeks.
The receivers have a long way to go. Hester and Bennet have improved, but neither one seems to be that "Go-To" reciever that a quarterback needs. Olsen is a very solid TE. I think at this point, the receiving core is ok, they just lack a "Playmaker".
The biggest problem are the huge gaping holes all over the defense. The D-Line is invisible, the secondary is out of position, nobody can tackle...there is honestly nothing that his defense does well. At this point, the only players I'd keep are Briggs, Tillman, Urlacher, and maybe Alex Brown. Otherwise, it's time to start over on defense.
JulieDiCaro said:
I'm not sure I'd keep Tillman. He's the mayor of Burn City.
millertime said:
I AM ALSO A BEARS FAN AND DON'T LIKE IT WHEN MY TEAM LOSES! I THINK YOU CAN TELL HOW SERIOUS I AM BY THE WAY EVERYTHING I WRITE IS IN CAPS!... I AM LITERALLY SHOUTING THESE WORDS AS I WRITE THEM! ... NOTHING BAD COULD HAPPEN IF WE FIRE EVERYONE THIS WEEK AND TRADE JAY CUTLER! ... YOU HAVE GREAT IDEAS AND SHOULD WORK IN THE FRONT OFFICE!
JulieDiCaro said:
YOU JERK! YOU MADE ME SNORT ICED TEA UP MY NOSE!!!!

I AM SORRY BUT I JUST GET SO EXCITED ABOUT THE BEARS BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THEM SINCE 1957 AND GALE SAYERS NEVER WOULD HAVE LET THIS HAPPEN BACK IN THE DAY GUYS HAD ACTUAL PRIDE NOT LIKE TODAY WITH THOSE ATHLETES AND THEIR JAZZ MUSIC AND HULA HOOPS!
