Chicago Cubs Headlines for Tuesday

LOHO's crack investigative unit (me) was up bright and early this morning, scouring the interwebs for Cubs headlines for your information and entertainment.

Alas, it's that time of the year when the Cubs essentially cease to exist while we all wait, breathless, to crown the next World Series champion.

So bear with me for this mish mash of headlines that may or may not be Cubs-related.

For those of you who want to see Vlad play in Wrigley (even though he's a DH and I have no idea where we would put him), you'd better start sucking up to his mom:

From mlbtraderumors.com:

"With the Angels eliminated from the playoffs, it was only fitting for Ben Bolch of the L.A. Times to ask impending free agent Vladimir Guerrero about the future.  Vlad's thoughts:

"I'm not thinking so much about the uncertainty, but I'm thinking about my mom and how comfortable she feels in Anaheim.  That's always one thing that I'm going to think about regarding free agency.  It would be very gratifying to continue to play with the guys I've known here and have gotten used to."

Guerrero also admitted the importance of showing he can play the outfield, since he spent the vast majority of this season at DH.  Vlad turns 35 in February, and he's expected to take a pay cut from this year's $15MM salary.  He projects as a Type A free agent, though an arbitration offer from the Angels seems unlikely."

It appears the Cubs are in on the hunt for Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman. Aroldis Chapman? Chapman? And he's Cuban?

Huh.

Chapman will likely get more than the $32 million that the New York Yankees dug up for fellow Cuban defector Jose Contreras(notes) in 2002, according to Sports Illustrated. And why not? The guy can supposedly hit 102 mph on the radar gun. The Yankees, of course, are in the hunt for Chapman as well and had him as a guest at Game 6 of the ALCS.

Teams that supposedly have serious interest include the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, Oakland Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals.

Let's see. .  . did we talk about the Cubs leaving Mesa? Yes? Okay. . .  what about LaRussa resigning with the Cards and bringing Mark McGwire with hi . .   you're right, we did that yesterday. . .  hmmmmmmmmmmm. Okay, enough with the real news. On to the fake news.

This Heckler article made me giggle:

The Cubs signed hitting guru Rudy Jaramillo to a three-year deal today as hitting coach and right fielder, filling two desperate needs from its dismal 2009 season.

"Rudy knows more about hitting than most of our players have forgotten and, trust me, they've forgotten a lot," said GM Jim Hendry. "And a guy who knows that much about hitting must be good enough to play right field for us. I'm so sure of that, I'm staking on it whatever remaining credibility I have."

Jaramillo has spent 15 seasons with the Texas Rangers. His signing has stirred up speculation the Cubs will bring back troubled OF Milton Bradley, who prospered at the plate in his one season as a Ranger.

"If we bring Milton back he and Rudy will play right field at the same time," said Hendry. "We hope Rudy's gentle guidance will prevent Milton from snapping again."

Hendry said he's only considered one lineup scenario should his team go with two men in right next season.

"We'll probably just go without a left fielder and put someone really fast in center," said Hendry. "Anything to get [Alfonso] Soriano off the field is what we in the biz call 'addition by subtraction.'"

And from The Onion:

MINNEAPOLIS--Following the Yankees' Game 3 victory over the Twins in the ALDS Sunday, Alex Rodriguez demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of the most basic celebratory techniques when he broke bottles of champagne over several of his teammates' heads. "We were all screaming and cheering, but he just laughed in this weird monotone for a minute or so, then lifted his arm straight up, smashed a bottle on Melky [Cabrera]'s head, and rubbed the shards of glass into Melky's eyes," teammate Robinson Cano said. "He fired a cork into [Nick] Swisher's face from point-blank range, too. Then he just ran around in tiny circles for about 10 minutes. It was bizarre." Rodriguez's publicist later released a statement of apology indicating that, from this point forward, the Yankee third baseman would jump on home plate with the rest of his teammates after game-winning hits, and would no longer try to lick everyone's face.

No one is more relieved than Jeter.

That's it for the headlines this morning. A couple of odds and ends. If there's a free agent you're terrified to see in Cubbie Blue next season, EMAIL it to me, along with a brief description of what makes said FA so scary. PLEASE DON'T POST YOUR ANSWER HERE.

Also, we're trying to pick a game for LOHO Day 2010, so if you're going to be around in late July, feel free to toss a suggestion date out there.

Happy Tuesday, kids!

Paul Sullivan doesn't. Still tweeting about pushing the Milton Bradley ejection button as the first order of business.

But I do. The Trib and WGN and the Cubs being a part of the same company was always wrapped up into the Cub experience for me growing up. That faded somewhat, but it still feels like my baseball parents have officially signed the divorce papers now.

It's also different in that all those 37 other times the media reported the sale being final got to be like the boy crying wolf, and I wasn't sure it was ever gonna happen for real. And I really don't know that we can attribute anything that has happened until now as the result of the Ricketts' influence. Now it's all on them.

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

I mean, seriously (about your first paragraph).

Sullivan has a serious problem. I've gone back and forth with people like Jimmy Greenfield on this a ton ... I just don't know how people can defend him as an integral journalist.

Also, Ricketts press conference will be Friday; they're expected to at least give a little insight on what to expect during the offseason.

gravedigger said:

Agree, agree, agree.

AndCounting said:

I think some people become journalists partly to empower themselves against jocks, bullies, popular kids, and/or snooty hot chicks. That attitude can be healthy when it motivates you to do your job better, dig harder for a story, and have the guts to stand up to people who could otherwise ruin you. But Sully has kind of abandoned that with Milton, just being petty and vindictive without a whole lot of substance. A good journalist can trash a guy with the facts and opinions so well crafted that they appear to be self evident. Sullivan just started making stuff up. I've seen him do better, and I think with the right relationship counselor he and Bradley could both have resurgent years in 2010.

cubbiejulie said:

user-pic

That is the most insightful comment on Paul Sullivan I've seen.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Thanks. We used to have a thing. I don't like to talk about it much, but I know him like no one else.

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

Doubtful. Bradley isn't the problem, he is. He'll have plenty of vindictive shit to say about Zambrano and Soriano, just like last year. Bradley took the heat off those two the last month with his acting up

AndCounting said:

user-pic

Unfortunately no one has exclusive rights on being a jackass. But you're right, Sullivan won't be without a target if Bradley leaves. I'd definitely prefer it if he made actual baseball the focus of his reporting, but that is so not the trend. That article about computer-generated game summaries (can't remember where it was) was pretty telling. A robot can describe the game, but it takes real human wit to gossip about the players. Ugh.

I still think Sully can do better, though. And he and his colleagues must, or there just won't be a reason to read the Trib sports section anymore.

cubbiejulie said:

user-pic

But no one can describe a game like we can!

It seems that any journalist who is embedded with the Cubs, such as Sullivan, and Carrie Muskat, are just given tidbits to keep them at a distance. The Cubs management keeps its cards close to the chest, and nothing short of an actual announcement can be relied upon. Just about everything you hear from the press is pure speculation.

I understand you may feel like the Cubs and WGN and the Trib were intertwined but the truth is the Tribune that you are thinking of, the Tribune of your youth is slowly falling apart in front of us. It was (and still is) best for the Cubs to get far away from the Tribune as this disaster in the media business continues to unfold.

cubbiejulie said:

user-pic

It's true. I'll never be the same.

It does make me sad that my kids won't come home after school to see the Cubs on WGN, followed by Andy Griffith, but then, they have like 10,000 channels. So they'll come home and watch the Cubs on Comcast and then something way better than Andy Griffith on a cool channel.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

There really was nothing like the juxtaposition of Andy Griffith whistling "Fishing Hole," leading into Van Halen's "Jump."

AndCounting said:

user-pic

I won't argue with that. Last year I was equal parts inspired and sickened when I walked through the Hall of Inscriptions on the ground floor of the Tribune Tower for the first time. It was awesome to read those quotes about the importance of journalism, the free press, truth, and the written word etched into the walls of that place--but awful to realize it's little more than decoration now. Here's one of them:

"Give me Liberty to know, to utter and to argue freely according to my conscience, above all other liberties." the powerful words of (ironically enough) Milton

The ones where this guy is a huge asshole and messes with normal people just for the sake of messing with them...not so funny to me.

I liked the one about the nationals tickets best. Otherwise it seemed too mean spirited to me.

Does the Friday press conference about a Tuesday morning sale bother anyone else? I know it's an off day for the World Series, but it's also the perfect day to hide an unpopular announcement at the tail-end of the media cycle. Why couldn't they hold one today (also an off day)? It's not like they haven't had time to prepare.

Doc Blume said:

user-pic

I doubt they will make any unpopular announcement at that meeting...

Anything unpopular would probably have to so with personal seat licenses and/or raising ticket prices, which would probably not be done through a press conference.

millertime said:

Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention. I've just been handed an urgent and horrifying news story. I need all of you, to stop what you're doing and listen.

I just had a phone interview, and it went great.

Did I say that loud?

I don't know what to say.
I just...
I got excited.
I just wanted to shout it
from on top of a mountain.
But I didn't have a mountain.
I had a username and a keyboard.
Look.
I blog the news.
That's what I do.
And today's top story,
in Millertime's world,
read something like this:

My phone interview this morning went great.

cubbiejulie said:

user-pic

We require additional information. What kind of phone was it? Did you dress up for your phone interview? Was your mom there?

millertime said:

user-pic

The phone was a Samsung. The SAMSUNG u430 gives you a lot of ways to say it – text messages, emails, Instant Messages, picture messages and, of course, phone calls. But there’s a lot of fun packed in with all that functionality. Like a camera with Night Shot, Bluetooth® Wireless Technology and a host of location-based services.

I was wearing my lucky Derrek Lee old Spring Training style shirt. The rich 50% cotton threads provide a wonderful canvas for the dark and striking blues and reds of Cubs fandom.

I also had on a pair of jeans. One of the most comfortable fits, the classic Relaxed Fit 550™ Jean offers an easy universal fit through the seat and thigh, tapering below the knee. Sits at the waist. Country Of Origin: Imported.

My mom was not there.

carlheartscubs said:

user-pic

Anyone under the age of 60 should not wear tapered leg jeans. Unless they're skinny jeans, but it's really hard to pull those off.

carlheartscubs said:

user-pic

Congratulations. I've always found that, at the end of interviews, it helps to say, "I'm willing to do anything for this job. Anything."

millertime said:

Also, break up the word anything into "An-ny-thi-ing".

Man, how does a guy who builds a team that wins back to back division titles, 3 winning seasons back to back for the first time in a long time, keep his job?

The Ricketts first move should be to fire JH.
