Chicago Cubs Headlines for Thursday

A big LOHO welcome to Rudy Jaramillo

Whatever Jim Hendry wants, Jim Hendry gets. And my little Jimmy wants Rudy Jaramillo. Yesterday, the Cubs announced their newest addition, the greatest hitting coach EVER:

"We're thrilled to have him," Hendry said at a Wrigley Field news conference. "We feel like we're the beneficiary of good timing. I think Rudy feels the same way.

"When you get an opportunity to put somebody in place that is so well respected and so universally considered at the top of his profession, you certainly jump at the chance that, and that's what we did."

And dearest Rudy sure knows how to sweet talk a fanbase:

"I used to be with the Astros from '90-93, and obviously we came here every year, and for whatever reason, I felt something special here," he said. "I thought I was going to get that same feeling in Yankee Stadium and Fenway (Park), and it didn't happen.

"I've always kept it in mind, following the Cubs. It wasn't a decision I just made all of a sudden. I was already thinking this summer if things didn't work out in Texas where I'd want to go, and this is the place I've always thought about."

But didn't we have someone new around the clubhouse this season that really really wanted to be with the Cubs this year? How's Rudy going to handle the pressure of not being in Texas anymore?

''I don't feel any pressure,'' Jaramillo said. ''I trust myself. I don't doubt myself in any way. I'm just in a different city.''

Backing up the confidence are his credentials, including the longest current streak of 800-run seasons (13) since World War II. In his 15 years at Texas, a laundry list of rookies, relocating veterans and even aging stars -- such as Sammy Sosa in 2007 -- thrived under his tutelage.

In non-Rudy news, Carrie Muskat gets the lowdown on Geovany Soto's offseason workouts:

MLB.com: This offseason, when do you start your workouts?

Soto: I won't shut it down completely. I'll probably start working right away. Maybe I'll take a week off, but after that, I'll hit the gym and by November, I'll be training full-time. I'll pick up a bat Dec. 1. I started in January [last year] to get ready for the World Baseball Classic, but this year, I'll start earlier to work on my hands and stuff.

But she couldn't resist a food question:

MLB.com: Is there a comfort food you crave?

Soto: It's a Christmas food called "Arroz con Gandules" [rice with pigeon peas] -- it's a national dish for Christmas. My mother makes it.

My mom makes very good frosted cookies with sprinkles. She also makes those "Christmas Wreaths" out of cornflakes, green dye, and marshmallow. Delicious.

Also, she makes Skillet cookies. I think they're also called Date Cookies. They're pretty good, google it if you want the recipe.

Hi Rudy! Welcome to Chicago

Heard Mr. Jaramillo on WGN this morning, and he sounded disturbingly like my 12-year-old nephew (who lives in AR). Not sure what to make of that.

Those Christmas wreaths are one of the finest midwestern holiday treats. The redhots provide a delightful spicy juxtaposition to the marshmallow's sweetness.

12-year-old nephew by day, hitting coach by night.

flyball said:

user-pic

I totally forgot about those cookies

Umbra said:

user-pic

Are they distinctly Midwestern, like how Mallomars are distinctly Eastern Seaboard-y?

flyball said:

user-pic

I believe they are

millertime said:

user-pic

My dad picks the redhots off and throws them away.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

so do I, but those are the best cookies ever. i mean, other than the red hots.

So do I

Why didn't she just ask Geo what he does to relax, get his mind off things?

Umbra said:

user-pic

"Geo, what keeps you focused on improving?"

Also, Brandy is apparently a Wisconsin thing. I heard somewhere that 80% of the world's brandy is consumed in Wisconsin. Sounds false to me, but who knows.

flyball said:

user-pic

I think that is true, or close to it, back in the early 70's there was an attempt to boycott brandy, but they only tried to get people to do it in Wisconsin because it consumes more brandy than anywhere else

I also hear that Wisconsin is the only place to get a decent Brandy Sweet or Brandy Sour, everywhere else messes it up

AndCounting said:

user-pic

I thought the stat was that 80% of Wisconsin residents are so slobbering drunk, they couldn't buy brandy.

Just Berselius.

berselius said:

I add it to my water heater tank. What a great way to wake up in the morning!

Max Power said:

user-pic

I know that Wisconsin drinks at least 80% of the world's Blatz.

Umbra said:

user-pic

Our hold on PBR was also pretty absolute until those East Coast Hipsters started catching on.

Max Power said:

user-pic

First Molière, then PBR. Wisconsin can never win.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

*snort*

Umbra said:

user-pic

Are you referring to this?

Because if you aren't, then you just got SteamPunk'd.

berselius said:

user-pic

lol, my wife worked in that costume shop for years. I should tell her to give her old boss a ring and listen to him bitch about those costumes.

Max Power said:

user-pic

That is a bizarre coincidence.

Wow--nice banner. I love it.

im tired. someone bring me a coke.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Ew. I was idling on this page, and a box popped up askign me if I wanted to paste this page on Facebook.

God dammit, CN. I swear to christ. STOP doing this kind of thing, or people are going to disappear in droves. *I* will decide what I want to post on Facebook, don't try to encourage me to post everything I see on CN over there.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Oh my god. It did it again 3 minutes later. I am about to delete my account.

flyball said:

user-pic

I think its messing with you

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I've had enough annoyances at work today.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Is there baseball on tonight?

flyball said:

user-pic

there is Fringe on tonight

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

And Flashforward.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Project Runway.

flyball said:

user-pic

eh, I'll keep watching Flashforward, but here is my favortie description of it

"The first five minutes are exciting, then its 50 minutes of 'what was your flashforward of?' and boring nothingness, then they make the last 5 minutes exciting so you have to watch the next week"

Fringe is better

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I watched the first couple episodes of the first season, and it was so stupid it was funny, until the humor wore off, and then I said no more. Please, no more.

flyball said:

user-pic

still better than Flashforward

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I just can't get behind a show that burned Mark Valley to a crisp in the first episode. What do I have to watch for now?

flyball said:

user-pic

they brought him back for a few episode, plus he has his own show going

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I really miss "Fast Eddie." I loved that show.

AndCounting said:

user-pic

I think tonight is foregone conclusion night, aka why don't the Angels just concede night & the Yankees don't blow 3-1 series leads night.

flyball said:

user-pic

I'm hoping for a breakdown and a huge Angels comeback

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I'm still hoping for a Dodgers comeback.

baturkey said:

user-pic

Angels have an early 3-0 lead.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Hooray for underdogs!!!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Every time they show that replay of Hairston running into the wall and bouncing across the ground I just collapse into giggles.

FrankS said:

user-pic

Bit of sadist, are you?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Hey, HE'S the one that just haaaaad to go play for the Yankees!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

UGH--this game is sickening. Poor John Lackey.

baturkey said:

user-pic

Boy, that escalated quickly.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

It did, didn't it? It really jumped up a notch.

MillsChC said:
