Chicago Cubs Headlines for Thursday

Cubs vs. White Sox
Imagine a scene like this yesterday, but instead of Soto it's Hill,
and instead of playing baseball, Freel's been released two times

You may have heard about a dugout kerfuffle yesterday between two of the Cubs' most vibrant personalities. I didn't see the video, and Pat and Ron didn't have an angle where they could read lips, so we'll have to rely on eyewitness testimony to decide what happened. Just how animated were Lou and Big Z yesterday? That is the question. First, we'll turn to Lou:

"I told him, 'Let's just build and get you stronger and stronger,' " Piniella said.

Zambrano didn't agree with the decision, so Piniella threw up his hands.

"I told him, 'Next time if you want, I won't warm anybody up and I'll let you pitch nine innings.' I don't think he liked that one," Piniella said.

And now we'll ask Zambrano, who's in a separate room, to corroborate Lou's story:

"I'll bet you asked him the same question, because you saw the replay and everyone thought we were arguing, but we weren't," Zambrano said. "We were just talking normally. But it seems like every time Lou talks, it seems like he's mad -- the way he moves his hands. Everybody thinks he's mad, but he's not.

So what did Piniella say to him?

"He told me 'Don't get angry' in Spanish," Zambrano said. "I said 'I'm not angry. I just want to pitch one more inning. He told me next time I will pitch a complete game and he will let me pitch 200 pitches, no matter what."

Even with all the talk of a spirited discussion yesterday, Big Z pitched pretty well again, which has become the norm for Cubs starters in the last week and a half.

The Cubs rotation has posted a 1.74 earned-run average over the last nine games, working at least six innings in eight of those contests.

Despite all the talk of the Cubs giving up,  this little sweep of the Pirates has Big Z dreaming big.

''Who knows what's going to happen,'' said Wednesday's winning pitcher, Carlos Zambrano. ''If we win 20 games of the 24 we have left, we're there.''
Dare to dream, Big Z. Don't let the haters bring you down! Just don't let anyone remind you that Kevin Gregg still looms in the bullpen, as that might make you rethink your Pollyanna optomism:

When Kevin Gregg gave up a three-run homer to Ronny Cedeno, he retook the lead among NL relievers with 13 homers allowed.

you're going to have to give up Cheney and Norquist, first.

gravedigger said:

That's a deal breaker.

If you're a Cheney guy, I'm not sure you can be a Republican either. Perhaps the John Birch Society would interest you, or the Stop Trying to Use My Own Words Against Me Party.

I wrote that -- I really hate when the login screws up and puts me as Julie. Sure, I like being able to use the ladies' room, but that's not enough.

JulieDiCaro said:

not as much as I hate it. i spend 45 minutes trying to figure out what the splenda-induced blackouts caused me to post now . . .

Max Power said:

To be fair, that happens with your regular posts. Hi-OH!!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

sure he can. you don't think Joe Wilson and Jean Schmidt love Cheney?

Max Power said:

Without defending or attacking either party, I feel confident that many, many, many Republicans wish Jean Schmidt (and now perhaps Joe Wilson) would form their own party. On a barge. In the Arctic Ocean.

talk about adding insult to injury. who gives up a 3-run homer to Ronny Cedneno?

I am sooooo ready for football!

Speaking of football . . or, I guess, futbol, US beat T&T 1-0 last night (played horribly). England, Spain, Netherlands clinch WC birth, Scotland eliminated.

Max Power said:

user-pic

a) When is England scheduled to be eliminated?
b) The Scots are not going to take this well.

JulieDiCaro said:

England is IN. Did I stutter?

I love it when the Scots don't take things well. Anyway, England has been asking for it for centuries.

Heh heh

Joe Wilson's opponent raised $100k overnight.

This story still isn't as good as the CA assemblyman caught on camera/mic talking about his affair (she likes to be spanked, btw). Oh yeah, and that guy had a 100% family values rating and opposes gay marriage.

JulieDiCaro said:

I love Republicans. Democrats don't even make the charts anymore because they just have affairs with hookers. They don't understand that, to get the really big press, they have to join "Promisekeepers" first.

Hoooray!!!! Ochocinco is back on Twitter!

This had made my entire week.

upon rereading the Lou quote I'm pretty sure he wants to make Zambrano into the Bionic Man

Good morning all....

Is Lou still not a dragon? Could have fooled me-Z knows better then to piss him off on TV!

Re Wilson from SC-do Southerners like to enforce the stereotype of rude, crude rednecks or what?

Re the CA Assemblyman who likes spanking-leave it to the so-called "Christian" Republicans to take the heat off of Arnie and his mess up of the state and its budget. Best part of this-the bozo had to give his resignation to a pissed off woman-the Speaker of the Assembly-who he had previously insulted! Talk about Karma!

And re Doc's hilarious suggestion-how much sugar did you have this morning?
