Chicago Cubs Headlines for Thursday

Cubs vs. Astros

It's two-in-a-row for the Cubs, on the way to somewhere between fifteen and twenty-in-a-row. Ted Lilly was his usual dominant self at Wrigley, leading the team to victory:

With eight strong innings Wednesday in a 2-0 victory over the Astros, Lilly raised his home record to 7-1 and dropped his home earned-run average to a major-league-low 1.72.

Not only did he send the Astros back to Houston with their tails between their legs, he provided the baserunning highlight of the day:

About the only fault anybody could find with Lilly's game was an ill-fated stolen-base attempt after he had singled with one out in the third. With Kosuke Fukudome at the plate, Lilly took off for second and was tagged out easily.

Did he have the green light?

"The light was red as hell," said manager Lou Piniella, laughing. "I'll tell you that. It's all right. Teddy just brainstormed that one. You know what? He tried to make things happen."

We've gone back and forth from bullpen to pigpen much of this year, but with Kevin Gregg firmly out of save situations, it's been a dominant bullpen recently:

With Carlos Marmol's ninth inning Wednesday, the Cubs bullpen has thrown 20 1/3 straight scoreless innings.

A big part of that has been lefty John Grabow, acquired just more than a month ago from the Pirates. He has made 17 scoreless appearances over 13 innings, easily the longest streak to start a Cubs career.

Finally, Derrek Lee is almost admitting that his wrist injury was the cause of his power slump for the last two years.

Said Lee, whose homer and RBI (90) totals are his best since '06: ''Who knows? I had two down years. But you just keep going.''

That's as close to admitting a physical cause as he has come in 2½ seasons.

''People point to my power, but we made the playoffs each year,'' he said. ''Any player will tell you they'll trade their numbers for the postseason any time.''

I have several things to say this morning.

1) Did you guys know that Lilly has the best ERA at home in baseball? (I mean other than you, TLFC)

2)I'm watching Ozzie on WGN news, and I have to admit, he's easy to hate but hard not to love. If he coached the Cubs, I'd probably adore him.

3) Lou is on with the special olympians, and I'm pretty sure he called a kid named "George" "a young lady" a whole bunch of times.

Oy.

I guess I should have read the headlines before I made point #1.

Heh.

flyball said:

user-pic

on point #2, I firmly believe that fans love to love the guy on their team that everyone else loves to hate

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

yabbut that aside, he's never boring and frequently makes me laugh. can you imagine what ozzie would have had to say about this Cubs team? Kevin Gregg's ass would have been tossed all the way back to A ball. And what would he have said about Aaron Miles?

Hee! Just thinking about it makes me laugh.

flyball said:

user-pic

true enough

millertime said:

user-pic

Maybe he would have called Aaron Miles a fag. Cause he does stuff like that. Calling people a fag. Funny guy, that Ozzie.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

he's not doing that kind of thing anymore, he's been to sensitivity training!

millertime said:

user-pic

Oh! Oh! I guess thats ok then! I guess we live in give up America!

When Ozzie Guillen becomes manager people get fork stabbed.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

there are some people on this team who could stand a good forkstabbing.

my point wasn't 'hey everybody! let's fire lou and get ozzie!' my point was 'heh, i would love ozzie if he managed our team.'

Sellout.

I love how the other day when asked if he'd keep using (some guy?) as his 5th starter, he said he'd rather send out his pitching coach. LOL

Point #1 - We didn't know Ted pitched on Krypton this year, we thought his home planet was destroyed?

millertime said:

user-pic

Where have you been? I checked your site over and over for new posts, but I got nothing. Did Molina kidnap you and try to water-board you?

Let's just say that we've been successful with our Cloning and clones require much attention and feeding every three hours

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Yeah, Derrek, but had you been hitting for power in those playoff games...

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

no, if the rest of the team had been hitting at all. . .

gravedigger said:

user-pic

But him too.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

wasn't DLee the ONLY person who hit in the playoffs? I have to go look at the stats, but I seem to remember it that way.

Doc said:

user-pic

That's how I remember it too. What is it with first basemen in the playoffs...didn't Gracy have a great series versus the Giants in '89 too?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Yep.

Well, at least that one game. Game 2, I think? That was when he hit his HR. There was that big competition between the two first baseman in that series: Grace and Wil Clark.

Stop trying to use stats to prove a point!

God I'm too lazy for words sometimes. I forgot about Lee and thought they were all just full of fail.

JulieDiCaro said:

my favorite thing about you this week has been your railing against everyone who wanted Fox out there, no knowing that his OPS was .829.

heh.

Nobody else seemed to have noticed it, but great post Ed. Great post. Funniest thing I've read all day. You are awesome. And probably extremely handsome.

millertime said:

Thanks Ed. I appreciate it. You aren't too bad looking yourself.

Umbra said:

X and Y? WTF are you talking about?

Are you talking about Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle which states that the root mean square of a particle's position (delta X) times the root mean square of the particle's momentum (delta P, not Y, dummy) has a lower bound of Planck's constant divided by two?

Because if you were, I would remind you that you can measure both. You just cannot measure both to arbitrary levels of accuracy. The more you know of one, the less you know of another.

This would have taken 45 seconds to google. Ask yourself before you post, "would I say this in a crowd of strangers?"

Booo. No DLee today, he's out due to the birth of his second child.

Selfish.

gravedigger said:

Next thing you know he's going to want to take the little brat to the movies, the zoo, and the game, and other places just to annoy me.

Boooooo!

there is a little girl in caribou right now that even YOU would be powerless against. she might be the cutest child i've ever seen, and her voice is like minnie mouse on speed.

she's playing i-spy with her dad. beyond adorable.

gravedigger said:

Why do I have this need to always argue with people about every single point they bring up? I'm addicted to arguing. I'm not even serious when I argue anymore, I just do it.

flyball said:

user-pic

I did that in a history/theory class once, it was my last one ever and I was so bored with all these people spewing stuff about how great this person was or that person was I just argued everything, even got a classmate in on it, we'd always counter what the other said

best history class ever

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

i used to do this. that's why everyone told me i should be a lawyer.

now i'm too old and tired to argue.

millertime said:

user-pic

I should have been a lawyer. I even argue with people when I agree with them 99% about something. I can't help mentioning something about the 1%. Do chicks dig arguing, or should I take steroids and play football?

gravedigger said:

user-pic

You and I will get along great (or terribly, depending on how you really feel about the arguing)

millertime said:

I assumed there would be more pictures. Less words.
