Chicago Cubs Headlines for Monday

Cubs Pitcher Lilly Throws Against the New York Mets
Ted Lilly, a man for all seasons

Ted Lilly reigns supreme. In which Cubs starter do you have the most confidence? He once again showed us why we fear not the Valley of the Shadow of Reds (Dusty has a hand in that, too). Six scoreless innings led the way to a 5-2 Cubs victory on Sunday.

"I take pride in what I do, that's for sure," said Lilly, who has a 3.05 ERA and who has become the de facto ace of the Cubs' staff.

"It's real important to me. This is a pretty special opportunity that I have, not only to play major-league baseball, but to be able to do it here in Chicago. I think anyone in their right mind would consider themselves to be fortunate.

"As far as knowing what you're going to get, I don't know what you're going to get. I guess I just go in there with the mind-set of knowing that there's no guarantees and I'm going to have to give it everything that I have to have a chance to win."

The Fonz is finally going under the knife, with  arthroscopic surgery scheduled for Tuesday:

Left fielder Alfonso Soriano will have arthroscopic surgery Tuesday on his left knee. Team orthopedist Dr. Stephen Gryzlo will do the procedure.

Soriano will not play again this season, but by having the surgery this week he will be able to start his rehab with the Cubs' medical and training staff before going home to the Dominican Republic.

And guess what? The Cubs are good against bad teams and bad against good teams:

With their Sunday victory against the Reds, the Cubs are 19-7 against Cincinnati and Pittsburgh this season. Throw in Houston and Cleveland, two other also-rans, and you have a total record of 32-13.

So why aren't the Cubs contending?

Against likely playoff-bound teams St. Louis, Philadelphia, Colorado and Detroit, their combined record is 11-25.

Lou has finally started talking about next year, and who he might like to see back, like John Grabow:

"He's a very competitive young man, he enjoys taking the ball and he's done a really nice job since he's been here," manager Lou Piniella said. "He's equally successful against right-handers and left-handers, so he's a pitcher obviously we'd like to have back."

And finally, Ryno's team won its first-round playoff series in the AA Southern League:

Ryne Sandberg's Class AA Tennessee Smokies advanced to the finals of the Southern League championship with a 3-1 victory over Huntsville in Game 4 on Sunday to win the best-of-five series. Shortstop Starlin Castro was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and reliever Brian Schlitter pitched the ninth for his third save in the series.

I'm not even going to follow them this year; I think that will be better for my mental well-being.

LOL @ Taylor Swift's comments re: the Kanye West debacle last night:

"I was excited to be onstage because I just won the award. And then I was excited that Kanye West was onstage. Then, I wasn't excited anymore."

millertime said:

Best quote I've heard all year. Other than "I'm not a dragon."

jtbwriter said:

I agree-Taylor is a class act-West is an idioto. The "i'm not afraid to be an a**hole" act is so not entertaining. And Lady Gaga was Lady Gag me with that so-called "performance"-pity-the VMA's were shaping up to be a "sorry I didn't record it", too.

Sorry about the Bears, guys. But Jay Cutler is a whiny baby who so needs a spanking!
(And not from the lame-o Assemblyman from So Cal-either!)

If you thought the Bears were going to save you from this miserable Cubs season, good luck.

First Milton Bradley, now Jay Cutler. This town kills any free agent we sign. Be afraid Marian Hossa, be very afraid.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

"This town?" What?

Cutler was the one underthrowing his receivers all night long and then screaming at them for making him look bad.

We just shouldn't sign spoiled crybaby FAs anymore.

millertime said:

user-pic

"A town is a type of settlement ranging from a few hundred to several thousand (occasionally hundreds of thousands) inhabitants, although it may be applied loosely even to huge metropolitan areas; the precise meaning varies between countries and is not always a matter of legal definition"

So says Wikipedia. Case closed.

this kind of smart-aleck response is why you have to stalk girls at other schools!

millertime said:

user-pic

Stake Out. It's why I have to Stake Out girls at other schools.

millertime said:

user-pic

Is it stalking to find someone's major on facebook, figure out what building she'll probably have her classes in, and camp out there all day to have a "random" meeting? Does it make a difference if I don't even go to school there?

I need a wing-man to pretend to be an architect.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

yes.

and it disturbs me that you've even considered this.

millertime said:

user-pic

But isn't it a stake-out, and not stalking? Larry David might agree with me.

I need a second opinion. From a guy. Who will agree with me. No fair signing on as Max, that won't count. Where is Matt at, he and I usually think alike.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

have you considered for a second that you're taking advice on how to meet women from both the fictional George Costanza and his real-life counterpart?

millertime said:

user-pic

Larry David did it, and it worked.

Seinfeld has warped my fragile little mind.

flyball said:

I have a crazy idea

just ask her out.

I know, wacky right?

millertime said:

user-pic

you people are no fun.

flyball said:

user-pic

I object, I am in fact fun, and an excellent wingperson, plus my accidental matchmaker rate is outstanding

people should listen to me

millertime said:

user-pic

how do you feel about architecture? Or perhaps Marine Biology?

flyball said:

user-pic

oooh, can I be a Marine Biologist?

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

Ummm..do you really want to go here? Cause we can dance, just let me know.

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

That is a little stalker-esque. Do you know this person? Better to do like flyball said, just go up and talk to her. Be funny and charming. Be you. And by all means, don't mention you blog all day!

millertime said:

user-pic

Umm, way to be my backup? Just make sure when I turn around you pull the knife out of my back.

Guess who doesn't get to be introduced as an architect for Art Vandalay anymore.

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

I'd rather be Bobby O'Shea. And you can be Seamus O'Toole. Those are better covers!

gravedigger said:

I think its OK. But then, I'm pretty Machiavellian.

millertime said:

Also, I loved that the very first tribute video for Michael Jackson was of him as a zombie in thriller.

OMG HE'S BACK FROM THE DEAD!!!!!!one!!!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I'm really bummed out that I didn't name my fantasy football team "zombie michael jackson." :(

gravedigger said:

user-pic

That woulda been such a good name.

JulieDiCaro said:

soooo . . . looking at lady gaga's clothes from last night, i'm thinking 'this is not a person who is comfortable in her own skin.' she's constantly covering up her face.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Yeah, what WAS that?

millertime said:

user-pic

Just Dance!

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

Can't read her poker face!

millertime said:

Disco Stick!

gravedigger said:

If the Cubs are bad against good teams and good against bad teams, it makes perfect sense that they've hovered around .500 and been pretty mediocre.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Who texted me? I don't recognize the number. All it says is "i hate jay cutler."

LOL!

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

never mind, i figured it out.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

I stopped texting you after I got "Who is this?" as a response every time.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

awwwww! I recognize you now! you can text me again!

Oprah is interviewing Whitney at "Town Hall Theater" in NYC. Now all I can think of is 'A Mighty Wind.'

JulieDiCaro said:

Okay, Whitney still seems a little loopy to me. Are we sure she's off the drugs?

LOL. I'm not a Bears fan, but one game, people. Good to see the Tribune doesn't discriminate though. They're terrible over every sport.

millertime said:

Apparently there is a Good Jay and a Bad Jay. If I hear that analysis one more time I am going to find a building and set it on fire. Twice.

flyball said:

Lilly made my Sunday more fun than Jay Cutler

can Ted Lilly be the new Bears quarterback?

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Urlacher out for the season with a broken wrist.

Just kill me now.

flyball said:

user-pic

yeah, I already gave up on the season, which frees up my Sundays quite nicely

when does spring training start?

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Cool. I like when hopes are dashed at the beginning and you don't have to hang on for half a fucking season.

I got home from working the Ironman race in Madison yesterday...got home in time to see the end of that joke of a Bears game.

Great. When do pitchers and catchers report?

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

Doc, you just have to find the good out of everything. For instance: I was at the Panthers game yesterday, Delhomme threw a billion interceptions, but I got a great suntan at the stadium, and my tickets were free.

But if that doesn't work, circle mid-Feb. on the calendar. That's usually pitcher/catcher time.

Doc said:

user-pic

That doesn't work.
