Cubs Open Thread: Do-It-Yourself Open Thread

Close-up of a vacancy sign board, La Jolla, San Diego, California, USA

I won't lie. This team has completely tapped me out. Emotionally, creatively . . . blogger-ly. I mean, I can only spend so much time writing "This team sucks" or "It's not over yet!"-themed posts.

As of right now, I've got nothing.

So, this is a TRUE open-thread. Feel free to talk about anything: websites you love, if Lou will be back next season, what's on your iPod, if you want Lou back next season, what you just saw on TMZ. Whatever.

Tomorrow, we'll get back to baseball.

The diary of John Quincy Adams is on Twitter at JQAdams_MHS.

Steve stone keeps pointing out that the teams the Cubs play from here on out all suck. I wish that gave me hope.

Here's the thing. The Cubs have 4 more games to play than the Cardinals. Even if they won all of them, they'd still be 6 back. They also finish that "easy" schedule playing 6 games in 5 days. So even if they were in it come the last week of September, they've still got a tough schedule, in my estimation. Basically, the Cubs would have to totally dominate September (the way they did July). But seeing as how they can't seem to do that, nobody should have any home whatsoever.

Doc said:

user-pic

Steve Stone, who I like for the most part, is just full of BS...

He was saying all this same shit in 2004 and 2005...one thing he never takes into account is how piss poor the team has played ALL FRICKEN SEASON! (...Sans 2 weeks after the all star break.) I'm not sure why he always thinks that the trend of shitty play will actually change for this team.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

Well, exactly. This team has been bad all fricken season. It isn't going to instantly get good because it plays a string of bad teams.

Ok...10 things I'd like to Ricketts do with this team, but I know he won't do them.

1. (Of course) tear down cursed Wrigley Field
2. I loved Jack Brickhouse, but take down the "Hey Hey" off the foul poles.
3. If wrigley isn't torn down, screw the roof tops and put a video board up in left field. (and don't place it on top of one of those roof tops...block their stupid view.)
4. Stop the celebrity 7th inning stretch crap
5. Ball girls
6. Bring Scalas Italian Beef back to the ballpark.
7. Ban Ronnie Woo-Woo from entering the stadium. (I actually haven't seen him much the last two years...so this might not be necessary.)
8. Get Dennis DeYoung back together with Styx.
9. Wayne Messmer back as the PA announcer and require that he, and only he, sing the national anthem for every game.
10. Play Van Halen's "Jump" again when the Cubs take the field at the beginning of the game.

gravedigger said:

#4 is my #1. Also wholeheartedly agree with #s 9 and 10.

flyball said:

user-pic

rubuttal
1. not even going to say it
2. really? it bothers you that much
3. false, I once photoshopped in a couple of electronic boards, they looked stupid
4. yes, at the very least restrict to only Sundays or something
5. eh, don't really care one way or the other
6. see above
7. cool
8. see #5
9. see #4
10. I loved it, totally random, and every time I here that song it still makes me smile

Doc said:

user-pic

"Jump" is just a happy memory for me because it reminds me of the 1984 Cubs. I hear that song, I think Ryne Sandburg, Jody Davis, Rick Sutcliffe and Lee Smith. Ah...good times!

You know what's really bothering me? The number of people out there who want Lou fired.

Seriously--what was the guy supposed to do? It's not his fault his players won't play.

flyball said:

user-pic

I don't want him fired, but like Zambrano this season he's wearing on me

JulieDiCaro said:

jtbwriter said:

user-pic

Afternoon...
Thanks for the smile-I love that crack-and Lou isn't a dragon...just a hopeful guy with a bunch of underachievers who need a kick in the ass! I think they will start winning-if only to show that they don't need a kick in the ass! LOL!
Besides, there are worse teams...Nats, Mets, Etc.

Doc said:

user-pic

I know that last two time this team has changed managers, that year the team has won the division....

But part of the problem with the Cubs is the high turnover in management.

I don't want Lou fired either. But I don't like the idea of him sticking around for just one more year.

Ideally I'd like to have a 45 year old Lou managing this team...wouldn't it be nice to have a good manager for this team that will stick around for 10 or 15 years?

With all this said...since we are stuck with these players it looks like...I feel that next year is really the final year that this core group will be good enough to seriously compete for a World Series title before a serious rebuilding effort will be required. If Soriano, Bradley, Lee, Ramirez, Dempster, Zambrano and Fukudome are staying, then Lou needs to stay to see this thing through and make one final run next season. And since we are in this situation, it's time to mortgage everything for next season, because trying to rebuild the system that is so depleted already, it won't really matter delaying that rebuilding one year...it will take just as long to get things straightened out again.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

You know who would be fun to follow on twitter? Lou. We should work on getting him on there.

Doc said:

user-pic

Ok...

A new subject...

I think the Cubs should seriously consider putting a new color guy in the booth with Pat and Ron. I don't really want Santo to go away, but it's obvious that it is becoming more and more difficult for him to make it through a whole season, and it would be nice to have a familiar voice there all the time when Santo can't make it (when the team is on the road?).

Of course, this would probably be looked at as the Cubs trying to push Santo out of the booth...which I hope never happens. I'm just don't like turning on the radio and all of the sudden hear Dave Otto on there or some other yahoo. One person...Keith Moreland? Sutcliffe? Karros? Hollandsworth?...I don't know. They've had 3 people doing the broadcasts for years in the past (Vince Lloyd, Lou Boudreau, Brickhouse/Hamilton/Carey?) and even Santo was part of a trio when he first started on WGN with Brenly and Thom Brennaman.

And that way, when Santo retires, Pat won't have to break in some new guy too.

Just leave Mark Grace in Arizona.

flyball said:

user-pic

Keith Moreland was fun to listen to

Doc said:

user-pic

He was really impressive. It was so surprising because he came out of nowhere really. It think it would really be fun to have both him and Jody Davis in the booth for a game.

flyball said:

user-pic

Jody Davis is still coaching, and I am holding out hope that he manages the team one day

but if not, then I would love to have that group in the booth

I have a problem with the mywrigleyville.com ad that keeps showing up.

I have never been to that site, so it might be the greatest and most wonderful site on the entire internet.

That said, the ad looks like it is the home of every douchebag Cubs "fan" that ruins my day at Wrigley by: (a) frequently high-fiving Jonesy and/or Smitty, who, of course, are sitting two rows behind said douchebag; (b) yelling "woo!" every time a ball leaves the infield; (c) intermittently yelling profanity throughout the game (for no reason in particular), despite the fact that I am clearly sitting with two kids under 10; or (d) loudly announcing his sure-fire tactics for bedding a drunk female Cubs fan, such as the douchebag in the aforementioned ad.

Doc said:

user-pic

Oh...so you must sit by me a lot during cubs games.

Doc said:

user-pic

To add to that, I'm fairly sure that the "fan" you are referring to does not know D-Lee's batting average or Z's ERA.

Max Power said:

user-pic

Agreed. I'll go one further -- he knows a batting average that he believes is Derrek Lee's average, but it is not. This "fan" will also attribute quotes to the wrong people, and say that he remembers seeing the big game that Sandberg had in 1985 (yes, I realize this is wrong -- we are talking about the "fan" here), despite the fact that this "fan" was born in 1986.

I really seem to have some deep anger toward this guy, but it is just a bit too early to hit the whiskey.

gravedigger said:

Hi all. Anyone out there tonight? I find myself in Chicago tonight and I am looking for suggestions of things to do tomorrow. I'm gonna try to go to the game tomorrow night. Gotta try and find tickets though. But for all you Chicagoans and former Chicagoans, please tell me what to do and see in the city tomorrow. Not just super touristy stuff either. Thanks in advance!

JulieDiCaro said:

You're in Chicago and you're just telling us NOW?

Hmmm. Take one of the architecture tours (either boat or walking, both are great, but I especially LOVE the boat tour). Check out all the new artwork in Millenium Park. See the new modern wing of the Art Institute. Get a slice (or three) of Due's pizza. Get a margarita (or 3) at El Jardin before the game. Take the bus to Wicker Park and just bum around. Go to the Book Cellar in Lincoln Square for cappucino.

That's off the top of my head. Anything in particular you want to do?

HoboHanson said:

I've been traveling around for the last 4 and a half weeks. This is my last stop before going back to the DC Wednesday and work on Thursday. I'm not looking for anything too particular. Just not the very typical "go up the sears tower" type of thing. Your suggestions are great. Gonna be hard to squeeze in everything...

I've started cashing my paycheck at my employer's bank on the day I get paid, after it took four days for it to clear at my own bank (since it's from out of state).

I deposited the cash into my bank this morning, paid my cell phone bill, bought gas, and paid the cable bill. Then I logged onto my online bill pay to find that my cash deposit was "pending" and I had been charged $64 for each of the three things I used my debit card for today.

Whoo hoo!

13-3 and 5-11.....looking at the schedules, it is possible. It would just be a reverse of the last 16 games and they would be right back to the same position as August 7th......otherwise, Bears open the season on 9/13.

Edelweiss said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

The Cubs are not cursed, but they are demoralized, due to a bad, but well-meaning mistake made in May. After Ramirez was injured, Mike Fontenot was forced to play third base, although he has played only 2nd base since he was a child. This is due to his vision problem, where he has to teach himself to focus his eyes, where, for the rest of us, this comes naturally. His focus was for 2nd base. He taught himself to focus well enough to play a good defensive 3b, but his hitting has suffered. It is amazing that he was ever able to hit any kind of pitching, but he has done very well for several years. His hitting will come back, and, hopefully it will be very soon. The Cubs will win when he hits, and putting him on the bench for 2 weeks did not help the team. It was in those two weeks that the team went from first place to 8 games beck, even though Jeff Baker hit well. When he begins to hit, the real stars, like Ramirez, Lee, Soto, and Fukodome will follow suit. Sometimes you have to look beyond the obvious to see what the real problem is. Another hint is that Reed Johnson has slowed down his blogging, and says very little about what is going on. We don't blame Lou too much , as he didn't realize what he was doing, and Fontenot would never complain. The idea that production must come from a position, rather than from a player, is the real problem. If Lou had it to do over, he probably would have played a bench player at third, until a replacement could be found.

Karen said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

I don't understand what Reed not blogging has anything to do with this...can you explain?

Edelweiss said:

default userpic local-auth auth-type-mt

Look at his blogs, going back to April. They appeared at least once per week, and were friendly and informative. They have been getting less frequent, and say very little. Being on the D.L. should give him more time to blog, and he is still with the team. You see him in the dugout every day. Also, he began by joking about Fontenot, but has cut down on that ever since Mike went to third base, back in May. Reed has probably been told by management to say as little as possible.
