Chicago Cubs Headlines for Saturday

Maybe she could help Z with his back

As you may have heard, Carlos Zambrano was scratched Friday night about 15 minutes before gametime. It appears to be the same lower back injury that forced him out of the game in Florida last weekend, and as you might expect, Sean Marshall's emergency start didn't turn out like he may have wanted.

This latest experience included a predictable outcome, with emergency starter Sean Marshall losing 6-2 to the Rockies and dropping the Cubs one game behind the Cardinals in the National League Central.

And it might not get better, with Zambrano scheduled for an MRI Saturday after he returns to Chicago, one that will determine whether he will be forced to the disabled list for a second time this season.

He left his last start with back stiffness, Saturday in Florida, after three innings but hadn't complained of discomfort.

"He hasn't gotten any treatment [all week]," Piniella said.

Zambrano might have strained his back while swinging the bat against Florida, and he took batting practice Friday before the same problem arose, although Piniella wanted to wait for MRI results before making any judgment.

He didn't get any treatment all week? With that kind of training staff, there's not so much as a hot pad or massage thrown his way? And Sully just had to throw this in there, though I'm not quite sure what it means:

... and that overshadowed the last-gasp move of Milton Bradley into the No. 2 slot in the lineup.
Last-gasp? Really? If he doesn't succeed here, it's over? Luckily for us, he had a good first game hitting second. Not luckily for us, the 3-4-5 hitters didn't follow suit:

'The amazing thing about it is he got on base in the 2 spot three times, which is what you want,'' Piniella said. ''But it creates problems other places in the lineup, so what do you do?''

The 3-4-5 hitters went hitless in 11 at-bats, including four strikeouts, and hit into two double plays.

I think it's a smart move by Lou. He's getting on base like a top of the order hitter, so make him a top of the order hitter. Geovany Soto made his return Friday night, but hit more like Koyie Hill than himself:

In his first game since July 6, Geovany Soto struck out his first three times up before grounding into a double play in the eighth inning.

You might expect Koyie to be downtrodden after getting to start for so long and now be relegated to the bench. But he seems to have an excellent attitude:

After catching 26 straight games in Geovany Soto's absence, Koyie Hill found himself back in the dugout Friday.

"What will be the strangest is when you start coming to game time and you're used to getting prepared," Hill said. "But, hey, no complaints.

"You're a major league ballplayer. Any facet of being a major-leaguer is a good one."

And one last bit of good perspective, this time from Iowa-bound Micah Hoffpauir:

The Cubs optioned lefty hitting Micah Hoffpauir to Class AAA Iowa after Hoffpauir had slumped badly since early June. He was hitting .286 with four homers on June 3 -- but just .171 with four homers since.

''Obviously, the last thing you want to hear is that you're going back, but I think it's a good thing for me at least, because I can get some at-bats and some playing time,'' said Hoffpauir, who refused to blame lack of consistent playing time for the slump, ''and hopefully be back in a couple weeks and help out in September.''

I like Bradley in the 2 hole. If his power (gap power, at least) isn't coming back anytime soon, at least it's more baserunners in front of Lee and Ramirez.

I think tonight's about time for Jason Marquis to remember who he is.

Also, in case anyone is interested, Tim Lincecum has been worth 6.9 WAR in 163.2 innings. That's fucking insane.

I'm interested because he's on my fantasy team.

So it's been rainy and cold the whole week here in MN. We've been playing a lot of Wii Sports Resort. In addition to my Father-in-Law mastering the art of playing all Wii sports while sitting in his recliner, my kids have created a Wii Mii for every Cubs player. Currently, Theriot, Soriano, and Z are playing pick-up basketball against Bradley, Geo, and Fontenot. DLee is swordfighting with Harden.
