Chicago Cubs Headlines for Wednesday

Immigrants
Some jerk Pirate stands over the wreckage of the Cubs offense

Unfortunately for the Cubs, last night they ran into 4-time Cy Young Award winner and likely All Star Starter, Ross Ohlendorf. I think he's nearing Orel Hershiser's record 59-inning scoreless streak. So you really can't blame them for the 3-0 loss to the Pirates.

The Cubs saw Pittsburgh's Freddy Sanchez score from second base on a dropped third strike when pitcher Ted Lilly whiffed on catcher Geovany Soto's throw, which would have easily nailed Sanchez.

They watched Soto make the last out in the top of the seventh when he chugged to third base on Mike Fontenot's single - after momentarily stopping around second - and was thrown out easily by left fielder Brandon Moss.

Lastly, with runners on second and third and none out in the eighth, the Cubs saw Alfonso Soriano (.198 batting average in June) fail to put the ball in play.

He struck out. Ditto Kosuke Fukudome. Derrek Lee grounded out, and the Cubs came away empty-handed.

Oh... well that's what I get for writing the first section without having watched the game or read any recaps. But even with the disappointment of being shut out by the Pirates, we should only have to endure one more losing series before a 15-game winning streak. Why, you ask? Because it looks as though Aramis Ramirez will be returning to the lineup on Monday.

Aramis Ramirez will return to the Cubs on Monday following a three-game rehab stint with Class A Peoria, beginning Friday in Kane County.

Ramirez will play on Saturday and Sunday in Peoria before returning from the disabled list on Monday night against Atlanta at Wrigley Field.

Ramirez's return is eagerly anticipated, but he cautioned that he won't be able to turn the Cubs' season around single-handedly.

"It doesn't work that way," Ramirez said. "Everybody has got to do their job. They can think whatever they want, but we have 25 guys here and everybody has got to do their job. It's not like I'm going to jump in and all of a sudden we're going to win every game."

I refuse to believe they won't win every game, especially now that Spellcheck is back in the bullpen:

Jeff Samardzija was recalled from Class AAA Iowa, replacing reliever Jose Ascanio, who was sent back down to Iowa. Samardzija pitched a scoreless eighth in his return.

''It's just good to be back,'' said the former Notre Dame football star, who was with the Cubs for two weeks before being sent down eight weeks ago to work on secondary pitches. ''I have all the confidence in my pitches. I've been throwing them, and they've been great. Let's go out there and see what happens.''

He has all the confidence in his pitches, so you should too. They've been great! And with most of the Iowa Cubs now on the major league roster, there have been some spots to fill farther down the line:

The Cubs' first-round draft picks from the last two years were promoted in the minor-league system. Third baseman Josh Vitters, the No. 3 overall pick in 2007, was promoted to upper-level Class A Daytona (Fla.), and '08 first-round pitcher Andrew Cashner was promoted to Class AA Tennessee. Both were Midwest League All-Stars for Peoria.

Big Z must've been asked about Crazy Uncle Phil's highly scientific poll, and responded in true Z fashion:

"Fine, trade me to Boston," Zambrano said.

Last weekend Zambrano said he would play for only two other teams than the Cubs -- Boston and the White Sox. But apparently he changed his mind about the White Sox now that he knows pitching coach Don Cooper doesn't care for him.

In truth, the Cubs can't send Zambrano anywhere without his approval.

"Got the no-trade clause, man," he said.

Any other team in the National League he would consider being traded to?

"The Dodgers," he said.

Why the Dodgers?

"Can you see me in Hollywood?" he said. "Me and (Sylvester) Stallone? Rocky VI."

Zambrano then began shadow boxing in the middle of the clubhouse. Very strange, this Cubs bunch.

Very stupid, this Paul Sullivan writer.

Also, Z=the best. Great response.

Sully just might be the dumbest of the bunch at the Tower. Don't know if anyone else subscribes to Vine Line, but this month's issue has a round table of the Cub beat writers (Sully, Gordo, Miles, and Muskat). Sullivan flat-out admitted that he roots against players who he doesn't like. Is that what they teach in j-school nowadays?

jtbwriter said:

Good Morning all...is someone looking for an arguement?

No? How about abuse? Oh, that's down the hall.

Okay, enough paraphrasing from MP.... As I am a "half full glass" person, I believe that Notre Dame will continue to pitch well, D-Lee will return to hitting well, Milt and Fonzie will hit well, and whoever pitches today will throw well, field well and also hit well.

I think I'll leave well enough alone and go back to work-you too gd.:)

oh is lee already sucking again?

yeah, i am one of those "i told you so" people.

jtbwriter said:

user-pic

Don't know if D-Lee is...didn't see the line score from yesterday's debacle. If it's any comfort, the Dodgers got 2 hit by the young Marquis, and the Angels played comeback way too late in stinking hot Texas. On second thought....no comfort from that either.

Oh, if you are a "told you so", do we get to see the Church Lady dance?

gravedigger said:

well, he will. he will.

All this crap about trading Z. Here is an idea. If he is so bad and such a disruption, why doesn't good old Uncle Phil just come out and say we should trade him to the Brewers or Cards and help our chances of winning this division. Then take another poll and see what you get. Friggin idiot fans.

jtbwriter said:

user-pic

Like I said, every village has an idiot, and they all voted in Uncle Phil's poll!

jtbwriter said:

A Pirate with a name like Ohlendorf? Sigh... Don't any of the Pirates have good old baseball names anymore? Stargell, Tekulve, Kendall, those were names. I don't even know who the manager is. What a world, what a world. Oh well, who's pitching today?
