Chicago Cubs Headlines for Wednesday, July 29

Astros-Cubs
Well, the Cubs lost 11-6, but Ted Lilly still made my day, even from the DL:

Ted Lilly joked before Tuesday night's game that Ryan Dempster never should have tried to imitate him when he jumped over the dugout fence three weeks ago and broke his big right toe.

"I tried to warn Ryan," Lilly said. "That was something [Jason] Marquis and I were doing, and I tried to let Ryan know it was a thing that maybe just athletes should stick to. He desperately wanted to be part of that crowd, and it came back to haunt him, unfortunately.

"Maybe it will motivate him to try and take care of himself and be a little more agile. I don't know if it's in the cards for him, but I'll tell you one thing -- he can locate a fastball. That's more important than jumping over a fence."
And Koyie Hill's not tired, he's having fun:

Koyie Hill is getting tired.

No, he's not physically tired. He's just weary of people asking if he's tired from catching so much.

"I'm having a blast," Hill says whenever anybody asks.

Tuesday night's Cubs game against the Astros represented Hill's 18th straight start behind the plate. That's the most by a Cubs catcher since Damon Berryhill started 25 straight in 1989. Hill has been the man since Geovany Soto went on the disabled list with an oblique-muscle strain, effective July 7.

And LaTroy just can't get a break at Wrigley:

The Astros placed reliever LaTroy Hawkins on the DL with shingles. Hawkins was ejected from Monday's game and could face disciplinary action for questioning the motive of home-plate umpire Mike Everitt. "I thought he had dete

Jim Hendry sticks up for Milton Bradley:

Hendry said Tuesday he usually laughs such rumors off, but added: "I think it's unfair to the player, and in this case obviously there wasn't anything to it, and we're finally getting a little better, starting to swing the bats a little better. Milton certainly right-handed is swinging well, and working like heck to get better left-handed.

"He has played very well in the outfield. He has stayed healthier than most people gave him credit for. All someone has to do is pick up a telephone and call.

"I'll never give out information the world doesn't need to know, but I wouldn't deny it if it was true. ... I never had any talks with anyone about Milton."
And B.J. Ryan didn't ruin everything in his first outing at Iowa:

Left-handed reliever B.J. Ryan began his rehab stint at Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday night, giving up no runs and walking one batter in the seventh inning. He's expected to have around six outings before the Cubs decide whether to call him up. According to Ryan's contract, the Cubs must call him up in 15 days from his first appearance or release him so he can sign elsewhere.

Dempster forgot how to locate his fastball.

Hope Dave Kaplan makes it over here to read the headlines. MISINFORMER

I know the cubs are a bit short in the pitching rotation right now...

but I really have to wonder why Dempster didn't go for a rehab start first and then pitch this coming weekend. It was pretty obvious that he wasn't ready to go last night and had quite a bit of rust.

um...weird...

comments are different.

I agree with gravedigger, the changes are excellent.

So I just got over here to tell you guys to expect nested comments later today, but it looks like the nested comments beat me to it!

Seems to have some issues with chrome (for me at least), testing with IE

gravedigger said:

Anyone else get a hang on "posting" -- it says it forever. Seems like the comment does post, but I have to refresh.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

yep--i'm getting it too. i assume it will take a little while to work the bugs out, but so far, i am LOVING the nesting.

gravedigger said:

user-pic

yeah, they did say they are going through site-by-site to make sure everything works. but this looks really beautiful. seriously, kudos to the CN guys.

Doc said:

user-pic

Yeah...good job. I really missed the threading from the old site...so this is great.

I concur. So far, so good....

What's the "Retweet" thing up there for?

gravedigger said:

user-pic

IF you click it, you can tweet the link to the headline

gravedigger said:

user-pic

it lets you tweet the link to that particular headline

gravedigger said:

user-pic

damn, when it hung i thought it didnt post my original. that's kind of annoying -- anyone else getting caught on "Posting..." for really long periods?

Doc said:

user-pic

That is happening occasionally to me. I just do a refresh. It seems to post every time.

Max Power said:

user-pic

I did the same thing, Doctor. I presume that will be fixed. Outside of that, it seems to be working great. Ah, nesting.....

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Yeah--LaTroy is on the DL with "shingles." Shingles in his brain. LaTroy needs to go to a nice pastoral setting for a long break.

gravedigger said:

i laughed a little when i saw that

Doc said:

so do I.

gravedigger said:

blah, not fast for me

Doc said:

well... you have the crazy part all taken care of already.

I don't like the nested...I have to keep going back up to see the responses

Doc said:

one thing that would be nice, which the old site had, was a "new" tag with all of the new posts since the last refresh.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

I think once you get used to it, you'll like it better. For those of us that came from the old site, it was harder to figure out who was replying to what comment.

Jimmy Greenfield said:

user-pic

Hey guys,

The comments will always post fast. If you refresh right after you start seeing the "Posting" note then you won't have to wait. Not ideal, but that's where we're at right now.

Cubs sent down Stevens, called up Mitch Atkins. Should have been you, Samardzija.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

Who the hell made THAT decision? Stevens was my new favorite Cub!

thisyearcub said:

user-pic

I think it was more to have a fresh arm since the bullpen is kind of taxed and allow Stevens to get a little more work in.

Don't worry, he'll be back.

Jimmy Greenfield said:

user-pic

That's a strange move. Atkins better be a lefty.

jtbwriter said:

Morning!

I beg to differ-Samardzija may be a little inconsistent, but that will change with more work-he was spot on Monday night. By the way, I was right-the cowards at the Trib wouldn't post either of my complaints about Sullivan or the other fools.
