Brewers @ Cubs: Live Game Thread

What a difference a week makes.

After a miserable series in Detroit and another at the Cell, followed by a so-so series in Pittsburgh, all is right with the world after one win over the Brewers. Miraculously, despite all the turmoil of the first half of his season, the Cubs find themselves only 2.5 games back of the division-leading Brewers.

Before some select members of LOHO go overboard with Fuld-a-mania, let's take a moment for a LOHO-wide reality check.

Has Sam Fuld played exceptionally well in his first two games with the Cubs? Yes.

Is it nice to see a leadoff hitter who really works a count? For sure.

Would it be better for the Cubs to have Fuld leading off than Soriano? Are you nuts?

From 2006-2009, Soriano's line has been .297/.355/.572/.927 as a leadoff hitter, ranking him consistenly among the best in baseball. And that line INCLUDES his current horrific slump. In the last three seasons, Soriano has hit 1, 2, 3 4, 5, 7 and 8 in the lineup. Nowhere else has he even come close to the kind of numbers he puts up as a leadoff hitter.

Sam Fuld, on the other hand, is a tiny, tiny man who didn't even make the team out of Spring Training and who so far has had 8 at bats at the major-league level this season.

Look, as his tenure in Chicago has shown, we can jump up and down and scream all we want about all the RBIs we're missing out on with Soriano in the leadoff spot. The fact is that he's had significant ABs in the 3rd spot and some in the 5th spot. He doesn't hit. We can call him a headcase (I do), we can laugh at him for saying he gets all befuddled if he steps up to the plate and someone is already on base (I did), and we can bitch and moan about having a "real" leadoff hitter like Fuld or Furcal.

The bottom line is that Soriano isn't the same player if you move him out of the leadoff spot. He's not moving.

Get over it.

Today the as-of-yet-unwaived Carlos Zambrano (4-3, 3.69, 1.33) will take on Jeff Suppan (5-6, 4.86, 1.66). Allow me to take this opportunity to express how wrong it is that Jeff Suppan has won more games than Carlos Zambrano. Very, very wrong. Let's try to remedy that today.

Game time is 1:20 on CSN.

Lineups to come.

Is Fuld smaller than Fontenot or does DLee dwarf anyone, especially when he is patting them on the head?

let's put it this way: i'm 5'7, and his pants are not long on me.

Sam Fuld's heart is 4858393028 times bigger than anyone else s.

It's packed into a pretty dinky little frame

is it just me or does Vegetable Lasagna look bigger than usual?

According to Baseball-Reference.com, Sam Fuld is 5'10" and 185 pounds. That makes him about the height of the average adult American male. Pretty much everybody looks short next to DLee.

once again, i'm 5'7 and his pants are just right on me.

Suppan is apparently too scared to bean Z.

i was half asleep. who did Z hit?

baturkey said:

He hit Z, almost definitely unintentially, because it loaded the bases with none out. That is the inning the Brewers scored their run, when Z walked Hart to force Counsell in.

Gah, I mean he hit Fielder.

Question: If someone made cupcakes with firecrackers (unlit) stuck into them, would it deem them inedible?

baturkey said:

I would eat them.

Carl Heartscubs Gierhan said:

Probably in the strictest food service sense of unedible, but like baturkey, I'd eat them.

Here's Jeff Baker to drive in the go ahead run and steal our hearts!

Maim said:

Damn it. I wish I could listen to this game. Why don't people have radios anymore?

(I am dog sitting.)

Maim said:

Baker's gameday photo and stats are not very inspiring.

Maim said:

Okay, if two people will eat them, SEVERAL people will eat them. Firecracker cupcakes are a go.

As long as they aren't nansy-pansies.

Did you say nanny panties?

You know, Julie, it really is easier to dislike Ryan Braun over the radio and via Gameday cartoons.

Ron on the double play to end the 9th: "OH GOD! NO!"

Maim said:

He was pissing me off on my drive home and it was only the 5th inning with one out.

Maim said:

I hate when gameday says the count is 3-3.

If it has time to change to a different count, why can't it change to 0-0 and add one to the out count?

Maim said:

Haha. Win.
