Father and son (2-3) playing baseball, (blurred motion)

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to my Dad, Pete DiCaro, who coached just about every team the kids in my family were ever on (t-ball, baseball, soccer, and otherwise), and endured years upon years of little boys who ran from 1st to 3rd (skipping 2B entirely), little girls who rested the bat on their shoulders at the plate(getting the barrel snagged in the bows that adorned their ponytails) and dandelion pickers of every gender in the OF (and often the IF, too), with a smile on his face. I know that he gets some small measure of satisfaction knowing that his weekends are now completely free, while mine are consumed with driving to various kid sports.

For all the LOHO Dads out there, I hope that today brings you lots of fattening food, a mid-day nap on the couch, and an afternoon spent watching Cubs baseball, the U.S Open, and the U.S. Soccer team taking on Egypt (gulp).

For those of you who will be awake for the game (which I am recommending these days, as the last 3 victories have come in spectacular, un-Cub-like fashion), today Randy Wells (0-3, lmao, 2.55,1.14) takes on Jeremy Sowers (1-4, 5.14, 1.51). Did you feel that shiver? That's your involuntary nervous system releasing bucketfuls of adrenaline in response to this battle of the titans.

And God, you know I'm never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, particularly when our previous horse batted collectively below the mendoza line, but, as much as I've enjoyed the winning, do you think we could win ONE game in which we don't have to break Kerry's heart? It's just that, you see God, he was here for a really long time, and we all grew a little attached to him. And, well, it's only been a year since we were all rooting for him. Old habits die hard. Thanks.

Tribe @ Cubs at 1:20 on CSN.

Lineups to come.

Get Randy a win, damn it!

if randy gets a win, i have to declare him fit for the starting rotation.

Lineup:

Soriano
Theriot
Bradley
Lee
Soto
Fox
Fukudome
Blanco
Wells

Any lineup that doesn't include the words "Aaron" or "Miles" is okay by me.

What do you think about this Freel situation?

I don't remember him being worth his salt. ...that saying is weird.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

i definitely like salt better than freel.

I guess it's because Roman soldiers were paid solaria, or rations of salt.

It's why we are paid 'salaries' now. It's the same root word.

is that true? out of all the random things I have learned from you all that might be the most random

hey, isn't that 2 out of 3 already?

Kevin Hart looks freaky

I looked away for a minute. Did a TOOTBLAN just occur?

Umbra said:

user-pic

Not really, Maim. Theriot did get an out on the base paths, but it was on a very sharply hit grounder to the 3B who tagged him out before throwing out the runner at first. It wasn't a nincompoop-level play by Theriot, just a bad one.

Geo! He's baaaaaack.

Maim said:

Ahhh, I thought it was a fly up on which he did not tag.

I don't have any sound at the Map Room.

The Map Room is awesome.

I get to spend my father's day at work, but watching all the sports I want at my desk. Kind of a wash.

JulieDiCaro said:

wow--are we ahead?

i'm not sure what to make of a game that doesn't have us trailing by a large deficit at least SOME of the time.

We should be more fair and balanced in our criticism of the 7th Inning Stretch. Denise Richards was bad, yes, but Todd Hollandsworth did that very, very well!

JulieDiCaro said:

Vin Scully was my all-time favorite, I think Simon LeBon might be my number 2.

Here we go . . . Ascanio loading up the bases . . . gak.

4 in a row!

Morning....
I've just got up to discover they've managed to win in a non-nailbiter fashion.....
Excellent, I can slink off back to bed then...

Oh, and as far as Freel goes, I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed that he won't be moving from Iowa to Chicago any time soon

JulieDiCaro said:

i'm afraid we're going to have to arrange for some method of waking you up on the off-chance that we need you to eat a fish.

is there some way we can tie your email addy to your alarm clock?

kiwibob said:

If they carry on playing like this I'll be setting the alarm myself. Fortunately I do have the option of returning to bed after the game rather than having to rush off to an office seeing as I work at home most of the time.

Rumor has it that the Vikes have already signed Favre:

I hope Adrian Peterson likes audibles.

Hooray! The Cubs swept the weekend series and the Brewers got swept this weekend. Spectacular.

"if randy gets a win, i have to declare him fit for the starting rotation."

You had to wait until NOW to figure out that he deserves to be in the rotation? What if he got the win, but only because the offense saved him after he gave up 7 earned in 5? The "win" stat is relatively meaningless when judging how good a pitcher is... just ask 1998's 19 win Kevin Tapani and his near-5.00 ERA.

JulieDiCaro said:

kurt--this was a joke from one of the podcasts. after wells had 1 or 2 good outings, i said that i had so little faith in our ability to develop decent pitchers from the minors, that it would take 5 good starts before i believed wells was for real.

JulieDiCaro said:

user-pic

also, i'm going to have to say something nice about blanco, too.

fuck.

So...how long does it take before Wells gets his second win? I say August.
