Cab Karaoke: Will You Sing for a Free Ride?

user-pic

I'd be falling down on the job if I didn't let you know you've got a shot at a free fare.

Noticed that annoying little gas price-surcharge on your cab rides of late?  Yeah, a taxi trip for free ninety-nine would feel good right about now, huh?

But it's not as simple as just hopping in and demanding to be taken somewhere for free.  In fact, if you do that, you might end up in Arresting Tales getting mocked by Joe the Cop.

So (jingle, jingle) here's your key to a free cab ride.

Starting on November 25, the Illinois Lottery is giving away free taxi rides to Chicagoans, with one catch, according to a PR spokeswoman.

You have to sing at least one karaoke song.

Look out for four Illinois Lottery branded cabs, which will be in front of one bar each night around the city.  A lottery staffer will "approach and encourage patrons to enjoy the holiday festivities by singing one song for a free taxi ride to their next destination," the release said.

So who is going to do this?  And tell me what song you'll sing?

my daughter, 13, had an idea similar to cash cab/don't forget the lyrics. Darn! We should have taken that to someone. If i were downtown, and saw this, i would get in a cab and karaoke. Absolutely! What song? That's a good question. Piano Man-billy Joel.

Dang it, Rosiedoo! You should have trademarked that notion. It is a good idea. I like "Piano Man." I think I'd go for a hip-hop selection because I can't/don't like to sing. Because we're in Chicago, I'll kick some lyrics from Common with "Take it Easy." If I could sing, I'd break down "Meet Me Halfway" by the Black Eyed Peas. Don't know why...I looove that song.

I would sing like a maniac for free cab fare. I would have the cab drive the long way home, too.

Ha ha! What song would you sing, BeccaLynn?

I'd sing for a free ride. And I'd sing...hmm...let's see... "Party in the USA"!

Good song choice, Josh! I wonder if the cab driver would want you to rap one verse as a tip. :)

I would sing, but the taxi driver may be paying me to stop! haha!

Kyra Kyles said:

Nah, they wouldn't do that. What would you sing, Campbell?

I would probably sing Hey Driver, by Lucky Boys Confusion, if only for the local-band connection and the apropos nature of it!

Niiiice. Fine choice, Ian.

I don't even LIVE in Chicagoland, but I'd flag that cab down if I'm on Michigan Ave just to sing a song. Depending on the selection, I'd do "Ascension" by Maxwell or "Bust A Move" by Young MC if I'm feelin' nostalgic and with a group of friends! Oh, and don't stop until I'm done!

Hey Silkysoul, sounds like a concert! I'd love to ride along for that one. Thanks for weighing in, and love the profile pic.

Well, since you asked (*-wink, wink-*), and we'll never get that cab concert in effect over the holiday, here's a link to my online profile:

OMG! If I was downtown with my close pals, we'd sing ANYTHING by the Goo Goo Dolls. Acapella even.

Sing it, Allie Sue! I'll bet it would sound great.

I sing something Tom Jones like " What's new Pussy Cat" or Delila I would definitely need a lyric screen to do the job. I can't remember lyrics.

Ahhh yeah, singing Goo Goo Dolls after a couple of cocktails. Of course it would sound good. I promise we WON'T sing IRIS though.... too many covers of that sound out there. Maybe something like...SYMPATHY?

of COURSE i would. "high on you" by survivor is a recent karaoke fave. i'd like to give "rockin' around the christmas tree" a stab -- it's one of my favorite christmas songs. love "hey jealousy" by the gin blossoms. i'm so there.
