Gmail ... now filled with sweet IMAP goodness

GmailI don't use Gmail, but for the millions who do, here's some potential good news.

It's now available via IMAP, which makes for a better experience than traditional POP3.

But what's the difference? Here it is in a nutshell:

IMAP
All mail stays on the server in multiple folders that you can design. That way, you can log on to any computer and see the same mail housed in the same folders. Good for people always online and who want to check mail from different locales. .mac is IMAP and for me, my iPhone mirrors my mail program at home at all times.

POP3
There's just one folder: the Inboxr. When you open your mailbox, new mail is moved from the server and downloaded to your computer. You need to go back to the computer where you last opened your mail to see previous messages.

To me, IMAP wins hands down.

Here's a link from Google that explains how to set up IMAP Gmail.

Anyone try this? Let me know how it goes

Mail auto-check all screwy?

MailI've heard there are some issues where Mail stops auto checking, even if it's set to anything else other than manual.

I've heard, because it happened to me. I didn't even realize it. I saw I had no mail and when I tapped the icon, I had 8 messages. I keep it set to check every 30 minutes.

The fix is simple.

Power off your iPhone and power it back on again.

As someone who makes fun when I'm told to reboot -- usually, that's a way for someone who doesn't know the answer to buy time -- it really does work. I've made sure before posting it here.

Most annoying iPhone quirk

Mail_2I'm not annoyed by too many things on my iPhone, but this is one that I can't understand. Apple, please tell me you are reading this, and while you're at it, tell us why you'd leave this out.

I have to go to the main icon screen (I'm still taking names for that -- see previous post) to see if I have mail.

I can find out if I have a text message right away, along with missed calls and voicemail. But to get the badge on mail, I have to go to the main screen,

Why can't there at least be something in the main list that reads 2 NEW MAIL MESSAGES. Something so I know without having to spend extra time, only to find out there's nothing.

Seems logical to me. Anyone else thinking the same thing?

Thanks for calling.
