You've heard me say over and over that the community is what makes iPTIB the special place that it is. Here's another reason for me to say it.
I received this note from my faithful friend and caller in Ireland, Sidric the Viking:
Scott, never being one to take things too seriously - not having your terrible woes with AT&T for instance - I thought of a bit of fun that we iPTIBbers could have. What about a competition for the screenshot that gets the closest to the 1,000,000,000 next Tuesday (or whenever). Must be taken on an iPhone or iPod Touch, of course!
Here's my (poor) attempt at 979,800,000 taken a few minutes ago. (SCOTT'S REPLY: This is far from a poor attempt - this is a fine attempt!)
And while I can't offer a prize on such short notice - I can offer recognition. The winning photo has to be on the lesser side of 1 billion (so like the Price Is Right - whoever is closer to the actual retail price without going over ...). Once the winning photo comes in, I'll post it along with your name and a big ol' thanks for participating.
What I love most about this idea is the togetherness it fosters among those of you who believe in what I do. So thank you, Sidric the Viking, for the awesome suggestion.
Oh, and the photos - send them to iptib (at) mac (dot) com -- Remember that they must be taken on an iPhone or iPod Touch. It's easy to catch a screengrab, if you don't know, but quickly pushing the center button and the top button at the same time - the screen will flash and the photo will be saved to your camera roll where you can e-mail it or keep it for prosperity.
And of course, if an iPTIB reader happens to be the lucky 1 billionth download in Apple's contest, do let me know - I'd love to do an interview with you.
Looking forward to seeing your photos. Have fun and good luck. And thanks again for the great idea, Sidric.
Thanks for calling.

What's the URL for that screen?
SCOTT'S REPLY: For the countdown screen? It's just on apple.com - right on the front.

Scott, thanks for running with this. I know time zones will affect people on this one - at its present rate I'll probably need to stay up until some unhealthy hour of the night to take part!
But I hope everyone really has a bit of fun with it.
My only piece of advice: get plenty of practice if you want to get close to the one billion screenshot. It's tricky enough and we'll only get one shot at it (oops, no pun intended!).
SCOTT'S REPLY: I agree - good advice - and yeah, it's all about just having fun and having bragging rights for saying you got closest.

OK this is what I'm talking about, a challenge! Here's something - go to the site on your iPhone then check the site on-line at the same time. My iPhone is 4,000 apps ahead of the online count!
SCOTT'S REPLY: Well that throws a little bit of a wrench in the whole thing. But I think the capture is all about seeing the number, although very strange.

Even more fun is the fact that the front page count and the count on the iPod + iTunes page aren't synced! Try refreshing and see how far the number jumps forward. On one occasion it even jumped back a hundred or more for me! This is great craic! Now I've got two iPhones (my 1st gen and Mrs Sidric's 3G) running the App count along with the two Apple counts on my laptop and they all disagree. Just as well it'll all end soon...
SCOTT'S REPLY: It might have something to do with java based on what I read, but how crazy. I think it would make it so much more exciting if the numbers would roll over at the exact same time.
