Sunday, June 29, 3:35 p.m. -- at my desk
Today, the iPhone turns 1 ... although it was around before June 29, it was released to the public on that date, so as far as I am concerned, June 29 is the birthday.'
So happy birthday, you little guy.
I think at 1, the iPhone is pretty mature for its age, and I think it can grow up knowing that it's the most popular mobile phone in the world. And that's got to feel good.
Now with the iPhone 3G and iPhone software 2.0, the original iPhone should be quickly out of diapers and well on its way to being a big kid now.
And ... hopefully the iPhone will even start talking. Perhaps a voice memo app or something will see to that.
Unfortunately, every kid pretty much has to put up with being bullied ... and the likes of RIM and Verizon and Sprint will see to it that the iPhone is no exception. Someone will always think that their offspring is better than someone else's. But instead of settling it on the playground, it will be settled on Wall Street and in the hands of consumers, as they will make the ultimate decision which one they like better.
I think it's safe to say that we haven't seen anything yet ... and that surprises are definitely in store -- for new models and for old models.
I hope I'm right.
If you'd like to sign the giant virtual birthday card, leave a message in the comments. It's not actually going to be sent to anyone, but it might be fun to leave your well wishes -- or your complaints -- or whatever.
Thanks for calling.

Hey iPhone,
As much as I complain about what you're not doing, I'm pretty satisfied with all you do. You're easily one of the best tech purchases that I've made, and I'm excited to see what you'll do next.
Happy B-day.
SCOTT'S REPLY: That's exactly what I had in mind. Best wishes all around!

Does anyone know how much this thing is gonna be unsubsidized? I have found out that I am not eligible for an upgrade but I will probably pick one up anyway. Is it possible if I pay the full price that I will not have to sign a two year contract? In fact isn't it damn near illegal for them to ask me to sign a contract if I don't get the discounted price? If not it should be.
SCOTT'S REPLY: We don't even yet know if there is an unsubsidized price from AT&T. Hopefully we'll find out soon. I don't think it's illegal to ask that, but yeah ... it hardly seems fair.

Happy Birthday, i. You did a swell job blowing out your candle. The cake tastes good. Hope you enjoyed all your gifts. And… pretty soon you'll be old enough to drive on Interstate 20. Get your driver's license at the App Store.
You're right. I didn't bring you a gift. Maybe next time. Right now I'm holding onto my money so I can support you sometime after July 11th.
SCOTT"S REPLY: Heartfelt, Wes. Eyes are watering here with all the love.

I'm a little late but iPhone, you are the greatest invention of all time (other than the Mac). I love the way you beep when I get email. I've never missed an email. You are by far the best phone EVER!!!
Happy Belated Birthday iPhone!

SCOTT'S REPLY: Very, very nice. Better than a Hallmark, Chris.
