Man Goes Too Far for Improv
There are many students nowadays who move to Chicago to take classes at either the Annoyance, Second City or the iO Theater. Thomas Crane is insane. Every week, he drives 840 miles from Blanchard, Oklahoma to Chicago, Illinois to take his improv class at the iO Theater. His drive (both literal and figurative) made the Tribune on Monday. Here's the article.
What do you think? Is it something to be admired? Or just bad planning? Also, check out the comments on the Tribune page... some of those people are just plain jerks. On the other hand, the article does neglect to explain why he is still connected so strongly to Oklahoma. That would seem to be a major question for such an article.
When I was in classes at Second City (so long ago I rode a triceratops to class) we had a guy who was going to be forced to move back to New Orleans. We were just about to wrap up our classes with our eight weeks of scripted shows. We were so obsessed with having a great show and convinced that we were all integral to the success of the show the rest of the class had a secret meeting to figure out how to help, let's call him Dustin, stay in Chicago to finish out our classes.
I convinced my roommate to let Dustin stay with us on our couch. Dustin said he would do it and that he would get a job and chip in for rent and stuff. Well, he did NOTHING! My roommate and I would leave for work and he'd be sleeping on the couch-- we'd return at 5 or 6 and he'd be just waking up on the couch. Since my roommate and I were also taking classes and performing at ImprovOlympic we were barely home.. this guy was sucking up all our food and cable tv. I even asked him about getting a job and chipping in but he just said that he was about to get a job. About to. For eight weeks!
We kicked him out two days after my last Second City Level 5 show. I think he gave us $100. My roommate was a saint for allowing that all to happen, but that's how serious we took our Second City classes/shows.
All of that to say, I wish Thomas great luck and hope that he is eventually moves to Chicago! I know it'll make life easier for him. Unless of course, he really loves audiobooks and that's the real reason he's driving back n forth. That Jim Dale is amazing.
